Spur-winged Lapwing Vanellus spinosus; a bird species First time sighted in India At Ammavaripeta cheruvu Lake Warangal
A species form African Mediterranean area, a wader bird Spur-winged Lapwing has been spotted very first time in India during January 2024. Spur-winged Lapwing is wadding bird with scientific name as Vanellus spinosus. These species has a habitat in the sub Saharan belt of central Africa. A native of the middle east and Mediterranean region. Commonly found in Turkey, Egypt, Iraq, Saudi Arebia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria etc. It has striking brown black and white plumage. face neck and belly is also white. It also has black crown on his head and eyes are bright red. Having long thin legs enable them to wade and run in marshy and shallow areas.
Ammavaripeta cheruvu Lake is famous for birding located near Hanamkonda village which is located 10 km from famous historical city Warangal of Telangana state. Cheruvu means pond. The Spur-Winged Lapwing was initially sighted by local photographer Mr. Jagan Pannala at Ammavaripeta Cheruvu lake on January 24th, 2024. Subsequent visits to the area confirmed its presence. It was during the GBBC 2024 that the Indian birding community became aware of this discovery. We visited this place on 19th and 20th May 2024, observed on bird and taken photographs and videos.
