There are about 6 different Bary Mleczne in Wrocław--that one is the busiest of all of them. I also like Bar Mleczny Produś on the east side of the old city, and it is a bit less busy.

When it comes to Milk Bars, the earlier you come, the more options you get. They precook most of the dishes in the morning, so they only have a certain amount of food throughout the day - when they’re, they’re out. The „lazy sugar with breadcrumbs” was probably „kluski leniwe” - a gnocchi-like dumpling made with cottage cheese and coated with sugar. A sweet dish served mostly in Milk Bars and school canteens.

This was not the best Bar Mleczny you could get. When you're in Krakow, go to Bar Mleczny at Grodzka street. They speak English there (from what I can remember) and they always have kompot!, but the basic rules remain the same (focus on items with prices, be quick when ordering 🙂, return your dishes to window, stern looking/rushing ladies etc.)

It's amazing how Bar Mleczny, something that was created in the 50s and 60s as a cheap food alternative in very poor society during the communist era has become a tourist attraction. I see so many KZreadrs from all over the world making videos about milk bars. It's also very popular among Polish people now even if all cities are full of almost all international food chains on every corner of the street. It's interesting that something created in time when was no market economy in Poland is winning on the free market now :)

It was not created during the communist era, the first milk bar, called "Mleczarnia Nadświdrzańska," was established in 1896 in Warsaw based on dairy items. That's why it's called 'milk bar' en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bar_mleczny

I had the same experience in Nowa Huta, in Krakow. I was the only Asian there, everyone was staring at me, wondering what I was doing there. I know the communication would be a struggle, so pulled some photos from google review and showed them to a lady who was taking the orders. Apparently, Bar Mleczny Centralny was from Soviet era and it has never changed since then. It was a cool experience.

Btw, your vlogs are getting better day by day. I think there is an app Udictionary which can scan a foreign word and translate into your native language. Polish people are so nice and friendly, the way they asked for selfie and the man who tried to translate, i have huge respect for them. This brings back memories from my own university days, I'll be damned. Really this is a legendary place. Also about the menu - when it's open at the morning, the prices are everywhere. they take them down if they run out of that particular dish, so if you're late, you're left with what is available basically.

This milk bar is a unique place in Wrocław because it has been around for several dozen years. Every day in this place you can sit at the table next to a poor student, a well-known professor from a nearby university, an old pensioner, a well-known and recognizable Wrocław writer, ordinary clerk or theater actor. At the same time, the president of the city passes by the bar, who you can see through the glass when you eat the local Russian dumplings. This is what the charm and magic of this extraordinary place are all about. It's good that you also got there.

BTW, IMHO it is best to visit Wrocław in May/June or September/October. May is already gorgeous if you go to parks and places like that and usually very sunny and warm, and September/October is still warm enough during daytime and you get the amazingly beautiful "Polish Golden Autumn" - the "yellow, brown and red" especially enjoyable in parks :) Park Szczytnicki (where the Centennial Hall - a large event venue is located) is Highly Recommended! :) Summer time (July and August) is VERY HOT and you will probably only enjoy it if you go to water parks.

I hope you are not affected with the trouble in Ukraine. What you ordered sometimes, it's good, if it's a surprise food! I used to work that's afraid of gnomes, even Santa Claus gnomes.

Pity you didn't have a good weather, because Wroclaw with its colorful houses at old town is really beautiful. About milk bar PTSD - these ladies work there for 30 years or so and don't know any English, I think it's also stressful to them to have English speaking tourists. These grandmas are really sweet when you talk to them, despite what you might observe. I don't think they had anything bad on mind, more like they think everyone knows how milk bar works because they are there forever. I wouldn't worry ;)

Hi Friends, if you plan to travel to Warszawa (Warsaw), there are four major venues you definitely should visit: The Warsaw Uprising Museum, The Ghetto Uprising Museum, one of the restaurants from ZAPIECEK network, an extremely successful traditional, country style Polish food restaurants (BLOODY DELICIOUS!). Apart from that at the end of the underground rail network, the KABATY station there is a small Shopping Center Tesco. In Tesco there is a fast food bar. If you decide to visit it, the quality and variety of food served there will make your minds EXPLODE!!! Have a good time. And, of course, there many others places to DEFINITELY visit. Among others The National Museum. Regards

"Miś" means Little Bear or Teddy Bear - many milk bar names are cute like that. The milk bar "magic" - apart from the communist era cafeteria feel - is that the food is simply "just what your Grandma cooked". I am very happy to hear that other than the stress of ordering you guys enjoyed my favorite milk bar in Wrocław, where I lived 1991-1997 :) BTW, Polish "jamnik" means dachshund :)

Milk bars used to be government subsided back in the 60s. They offered simple dished, mostly based on dairy products, hence the name. They evolved and introduced meat products later, and become go-to place for elder and people of less income. Most of the dishes you tried, like pierogi or schabowy (our local variation on the Wiener Schnitzel), pomidorowa (tomato soup) are exactly the same dishes people cook at home. It's changing rapidly as now our home cuisine is much more "fusion" for the lack of better word and we eat outside a lot, as everyone is now busy and out of time. Dishes being sold out is a sign of fresh ingredients - come early, and you will have much wider choice. That's why it tastes good, despite rustic style and dirt cheap price.

Ha ha, they ended up in the milk bar. It had to end this way. You know that milk bars are becoming more and more popular with western tourists. A visit to Poland without lunch in a milk bar does not count.😂😂😂 It started with Polish guides recommending these bars to Western excursions as a tourist curiosity, and now Western tourists themselves make rankings and recommend these bars to each other as cheap places where you can eat tasty and cheaper than in McDonald's. Note that in such a bar you have real plates and cutlery and you eat like a human being. At McDonald's, forget it. 😂😂😂. Ecological because there are no mountains of garbage produced, and the dishes are washed by hand and dried in autoclaves at high temperatures, otherwise the sanitary inspector would close the bar. In such a bar you have the guarantee that everything will be fresh and you will not get poisoned because in such a bar the traffic is like on the Champs Elysees and there is never anything left for tomorrow. These bars were created in the 1950s and were the equivalent of McDonald's in the poor Polish reality of communism. These bars were everywhere. Today there are not many of them left and they are usually subsidized by the city and that is why they are so cheap, but not all. The name MILK BAR, translated into English, can be confusing as originally these bars did not serve any meat dishes.Because there was poverty. The meat appeared in them much later, but the name remained.Recently, these bars are back in favor again, because the fashion for homemade food has returned, and McDonald's is everywhere in the world and is not such an attraction anymore. These are a few interesting facts about these bars. I was laughing all the time watching you in that bar. You are so wonderful in your reactions to this otherness. 😁💖These bars are usually served by old ladies and they don't know English, so you should turn on the translator on your phone. You'd do a lot better if Grandma heard the phone speak to her.😂😂😂Or you could call out loud if someone speaks English. Everyone, students, principals and the homeless, eat in these bars. There will always be someone who knows the language.😁Another curiosity, in these bars, when there is a lot of traffic, the lady screams the name of the dish out loud and everyone takes theirs from the counter. That's why the lady waved her finger that it wasn't your dish, because she had another dish in your order.😂You are so cute. greetings👍🖐👋🎖🏆🥇❤

Milky bars are popular beacuse of relatively fast service and affordable prices. You order your food from the menu on the wall(be quick 😁), you pay, and then you wait for a call(shout actually 🤣). If you are a foreign person that might be a bit of a challenge 😅 to remember what you have ordered, especially if you do not know the pronunciation. If you eat on regular base there you can get used to the drill and enjoy good affordable meals. Ah more more thing. People collect their dishes from the table, often cleaning the table with the tissue and they bring the plates to the collection window. There is one in each milky bar. I'm glad you have a chance to eat there.

Milk bars were popular after ww2 because at that time there was a shortage of meat due to the war. Because there was a shortage of meat it was very expensive. Dairy products were served as a substitute to expensive meat as dairy products contain lots of protein. After 1990s they gradually started winding down but nowadays most towns have at least 1 and most cities have a few to keep the tradition going. Here’s a fact. In Poland chicken soup is served only on Sundays. People go to church on Sunday morning then go to a milk bar to eat chicken soup as a type of Sunday dinner. Try it, go to one on a Sunday they will have chicken soup.
