"Progressive metal" is the typical classification for Tool's music, but as others have said they really are in a category by themselves. Nobody else like them.

I always recommend listening to every tool song multiple times and listening to each of the instruments through the entirety of the song. Every single person in tool are Master musicians. My favorite being Danny Carrey, the drummer.

Cracked me up that he was speechless and came up with greatness. Headphones are required to listen to Tool. Lead singer's name is Maynard James Keenan. He had a couple of side projects. One band was called A Perfect Circle. He wrote a song about himself dealing with his mother's battle with cancer. It's called Judith....try that one out.

Yeah. That's my song right there, just about perfect for almost any mood. Greatness. Metal masterpiece. But all the seconds to this from the Tool library are so very close. Composition brilliance. The Pink Floyd of heavy metal, though you're absolutely right, that they cannot truly be put into any category other than their own, just like Pink Floyd. Them two bands are in each their solar system in a universe all to themselves.

My man... Progressive metal is what they call themselves. So I think you would like "sober". I know you liked 46+2. "Eulogy" is another one you might like. Ever want to tell someone to f*** off in the hardest way? Check out "Swamp Song". Tool's only love song is about heroine, and is called "H." "Third Eye" is one I think you would add to your GOAT list if you heard it, but it's 13 minutes long so it's your call.
This song is a massive dunk on a prosecutor who pushed for harsh prison sentences for minor marijuana-related offenses, and was then arrested for possession of marijuana himself. It’s basically calling out the hypocrisy.

Definitely check out his side projects, A Perfect Circle (Disillusioned, Talk Talk, So Long & Thanks For All The Fish) and Puscifer( for some variety do The Remedy, Apocalyptical, Country Boner, Bullet Train To Iowa) I highly recommend some dives into other bands like Opeth, Amon Amroth, Alan Parsons Project (Sirius/Eye In The Sky, Wouldn't Wanna Be Like You, Games People Play), Rush (Time Stand Still, Dreamline, Limelight, Freewill), Leprus (Below, From The Flames) Fire From The Gods (Evolve, Right Now) Also, have you ever dug into the early recorded blues, or early Jazz?

TOOL is its own genre. Do you ever review A Perfect Circle? If so, The Outsider is a good one to listen to. Or all of Thirteenth Step or Eat the Elephant. Basically any of it. ☺️🦋 P.S. Lateralus is a MUST listen!!
