    The words ''Self righteous suicide, when angels deserve to die.'' means? What the song writer/lead singer said... “It occurred to me how we are judgmental towards people, even in death,” explains Daron. “If someone died in a car accident, you’d say, ‘Oh, poor thing.’ But if they died in a car accident while they were drunk, that would change your whole perception of how they died, and judging his or her death a in a different way. For some reason, that thought was weird to me. I was probably smoking weed or something…Daron is the guitarist who wrote it.

    The lyrics are from Jesus.. The term "self righteous suicide" is referring to his death, which he couldve technically prevented if he wanted. When Rick Rubin was helping Serj with the album he took him into his library. He had him pick a random book and it just so happened to be The Bible. He opened it up to a random page and placed his finger on the page. The verse that he picked was, Luke 23:46 - "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” Rick has talked about it in past interviews.

    @@justinduran1 Daron co-wrote this song. Daron gave his view on what it meant. That's just Serj's but Daron did say the above :) QUOTE: “When I wrote it, I did not think Chop Suey! was gonna be any different to any of our other songs,” says Daron. “But that was the one that pushed open the door for us -I was just hanging out by myself on a bed at the back,” says Daron. “There was an acoustic guitar I used to take around with me. I just started playing that acoustic guitar, and that’s when I started writing Chop Suey!.” Serj did change a few words however - Including the opening. Daron’s original lyrics were completely different: ‘Tell me/Tell me what you think about tomorrow/Is there gonna be a pain and sorrow/Tell me what you think about the people/Is there gonna be another sequel?’ System singer Serj Tankian would alter song’s opening...So perhaps he did alter those words, I was just giving Daron's side on what it all meant to him.

  • @silverdoeGirl

    @silverdoeGirl

    I must admit - Whilst Serj's tweaking the opening into something more mainstream, I guess, for me personally? Daron's original words made more sense lol - so yes, Serj tweaked it but Daron wrote the original concept/lyrics.

    The song is about the circumstances of a persons death and how it affects other peoples view of them. Death is a tragedy in almost all cases, just because someone dies from overdosing or something like that doesn't mean they deserved it, they were sick and needed help and compassion not scorn and hate. So the lines "trust in my self righteous suicide" and "I cry when angels deserve to die", as well as the whole song of course, are references to that outlook on people that die under such circumstances.

  • @clintonwalrath1333

    @clintonwalrath1333

    I feel like there are some Christian undertones/criticisms as well. The whole verse could be interpreted as God waking up, deciding create everything "grab a brush and put a little "make-up," and then hiding the scars with the passage time to cover up the horrific atrocities that come with His interventions (or lack thereof). "Why'd you leave the keys upon the table" seems to be a criticism of giving free-will to humans by comparing him leaving the control of a dangerous vehicle to crazy tyrranical people. Also, "you wanted to" means it's all part of a plan that involves his complicitness in all the tereible things that have transpired throughout time. I also think a lot of the song is about Jesus talking to God as he's being tortured on his deathbed. Jesus was in many ways the perfect human but God still let's him get tortured mercilessly. This is especially relevant in the lyrics of Jesus saying "Father into your hands...why have you forsaken me?" and "I dont think you trust in my self-righteous suicide." The line "I cry when Angels deserve to die" could be a condemnation of God because God allows angels like Lucifer to live and slander Him while he allows His son to die in a terrible self-righteous suicide, all of which he could've, in fact, prevented in the first place, but as the verse says "you wanted to."

    well for a start, the song's initial name was "suicide", and Daron Malakian, who's the guitarist, songwriter and second vocalist of the band, said that the song is about how people look at you or judge you depending on how you pass, like if someone dies from a drug abuse, people might say they deserved it because they abused the drugs, the line " i cry when angels deserve to die" ties to that.. the "self righteous suicide" line it's when you are convinced you have a good reason to do it it's a deep song if you tie the lyrics, while some other lines were just randomly choosen as Serj Tankian, who is the main vocalist, said

    as a matter of fact, the reason they changed the name to Chop Suey was because they couldn't release it if the title was "Suicide", so they changed it to Chop Suey, as it's a play on the words "Self-right-chop suey-cide". pretty clever if you ask me, as is their music tbh

I listen to everything from rap to metal, country to pop, but I know a lot of the folks from da hood don't get that kind of exposure. I worked with several brothas from KC that were mid 20s at the time and had never heard anything but rap. They thought I was a Crazy ass white boy when I played VH Running with the devil 🤣 Very cool guys.

    Guitarist Daron Malakian, who wrote it with lead singer Serj Tankian, explained: "The song is about how when people die, they will be regarded differently depending on the way they pass. Like, if I were to die from a drug overdose, everyone would say I deserved it because I abused drugs, hence the line 'Angels deserve to die.'" This is a song about addiction

    *UPDATE* Actually Daron confirmed it wasn’t the record label that forced them to. They just thought “Suicide” was a lazy title, and didn’t exactly had to do with suicide in particular, so Daron got inspired by the word “chop suey” that was used in old gangster movies. And it play well with the words “suicide” for reasons I already explained. Daron said: “It was something they used to say: ‘We’ll make chop suey out of him!’ It meant, ‘We’re gonna kill him.’ It tied in with the whole death thing.” --- The original title was “Suicide”, but the record label didn’t allow it. On their album, the singer says *”we’re rolling ‘suicide’ ”* before the songs starts. They went for *Chop Suey* as in “chopping” the word “suicide” (or *sui* in this case). So they just went for “Chop Suey”.

    Its called Chop Suey! because the original name was "Suicide" which is why at the beginning you hear him say "rolling Suicide" which is saying like they are about to record the song "Suicide". They were afraid the label wouldnt be okay with it so its called Chop Suey as in chopping the word "suicide" in half

    Just a little suggestion, maybe after you guys listen to the song and get that inital experience and reaction, a review of the lyrics could be helpful. You guys are awesome and I hope you get more into alternative bands because there are so many good ones!!!!

    Seriosuly, this is my only critique of their video’s. I love their actual reaction, but they add 1-2 minutes to gain an understanding of the band and the meaning for the song. I’d listen, so that they get that extra little bit so it’s not so “drive-by” review/reaction.

    @@claytonkirby878 right - i get that. But thats why its important to understand the background of why a song was written in the first place. It allows you to access and hear the song in an entirely different way - regardless of genre. Obviously the musicianship (if rock or country) is what draws you in - but for R&B, Hip-Hop and others the lyrics are essential to the song having the impact it does.

    This was the first single from System Of A Down's second album, Toxicity, and their breakout hit. The band was an unlikely success story, emerging in mid-'90s Los Angeles with unpredictable, often lyrically inscrutable songs with very high pulse rates. They're all of Armenian descent, and early on many of their fans were friends from the Armenian community, which led many labels to believe they had just a small niche. Rick Rubin, one of the more adventurous figures in music, signed them in 1997 and turned them loose, releasing their first album (which he produced) in 1998. After about a year of touring, it became clear their appeal was widespread - they were in many ways an antidote to the boy bands that were dominating pop music at the time. By the time they released Toxicity on September 4, 2001, they had a substantial and fervent fanbase. The album went straight to #1, defying predictions from years earlier that they would only appeal to Armenians. "Chop Suey" was climbing the charts when it was silenced by the events of September 11, 2001. Just about every radio station pulled it from their playlists in an effort to be as sensitive as possible after the tragedy. Even though the song had nothing to do with terrorism, it was considered far too aggressive. The line "I cry when angels deserve to die" was a little too heavy for most program directors and listeners at that moment. When things settled down, the song returned to the airwaves pretty much where it left off, since there weren't many songs released in the weeks after 9/11. We have Papa Roach to thank for clearing a path on MTV for cathartic songs that reference suicide. Their "Last Resort" video, also directed by Marcos Siega, hit the network in 2000 and was highly censored, with not only the word "suicide" edited out, but also related references like "bleeding" and "took my life tonight." By the time System released the "Chop Suey" video, which aired unedited, it was clear that young people were finding connection and meaning in these songs, and were in no danger of attempting suicide simply by hearing the word. Jesus said, "I commend my spirit" in Luke 23:46 , which is most likely where that part of the song came from. The line "Why have you forsaken me, in your eyes forsaken me?" is likely referring to Isaiah 49:14 , which says "The Lord has forsaken me, and my Lord has forgotten me." >> Source www.songfacts.com/facts/system-of-a-down/chop-suey
