So Hyang is a 45 year old devout Christian and gospel singer from South Korea. In her early 20's and newly married, she was diagnosed with early stage uterine cancer, which left her unable to have children. Upon receiving a healing from God, So Hyang's goal has been to use her voice to bring comfort to people who are experiencing difficult times. She is not motivated by either money or fame, and she has rejected numerous offers from major record labels. She does not own any social media platforms; however, she said she is happy that others share her music on KZread, Vimeo, etc. In addition to being a published author of several fiction books, she lectures about song and vocal technique at a South Korean university. So Hyang, her husband, and several assistants, arrange every aspect of her live performances; the music, backing vocals, staging, lighting, etc.

Welcome to Sohyang's world. Bridge over Troubled Water was written and sung by Simon and Garfunkel in 1970. I hope you know the original so you can compare, good to go listen to it if you don't. This is Sohyang's own arrangement of it. Sohyang is a South Korean gospel singer, cancer survivor and author. She is a very inspirational woman. This song was performed on Immortal Songs 2, which you can think of as a celebrity singing contest not a talent show like American idol. These shows are long running each one with its own theme. The theme of this one was 'English pop songs'. Well known singers are invited onto the show and each singer picks and arranges a song and receives votes on their performance. Sohyang won this particular Immortal Songs.

GREAT reaction. Trust and believe, you witnessed just a very small sample of the flexibility in the voice of the PHENOMENAL So Hyang. Her vocal range is RIDICULOUS, and her breath control is INSANE. This event was in 2015 when she was 37 years old. At the beginning of her career in 1996, So Hyang was dubbed The Korean Mariah Carey. Truth be told, the legendary Mariah Carey, in her prime and on her best day, did not possess the power, vocal stamina, or breath control of So Hyang.

Great reaction, Alex. You brought up a great relation with Mariah Carey, because Sohyang has repeated countless times that she is her idol. She used to sing to her songs when she was younger. In terms of vocal technique, tone, I’d actually say they are quite dissimilar, but I agree Carey has had a significant musical influence on Sohyang. Next I recommend Sohyang’s cover of “I Have Nothing” at the DMC festival next. She outdoes the original!

I would suggest next a Korean song by her "Arirang Alone" also on an Immortal Songs 2 show.

Her name is So Hyang (pronounced closely to So Young), She is thought to be by many musical critics the very best female vocalist on earth (of course many have the same opinion, but it is always arguable -- what is not, is her otherworldly talent.). She has performed some of the greatest live performances I have ever seen/heard in both English and Korean. She can sing any genre. This was a contest show but in South Korea you have to already be a known or talented singer to be on the show. It is not like in other places where unknowns are widely accepted.

She turned down major company’s like and has overcome so many obstacles like discrimination in Korea initially when she was just starting out, cancer and numerous bouts of pneumonia that threatened to end her singing career. She sings for god and says if you feel better after listening to her then she is happy. What am amazing lady. She has so so many beautiful powerful songs. There are some variety shows in east Asia (namely China and south Korea) that managed to invited established singers and artistes to participate as competitors. They don't win anything except bragging rights and it is seen as a contribution to the music scene. The calibre of these singers in their own country can be as famous or well known as Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston. Sohyang was already an established gospel singer. In China for example, Dimash got second because the winner was Sandy Lam, long known as the Mariah of the East and was very established with a solid fan base. No one who makes it onto the stage of I Am Singer is a bad singer, obviously, but it is hard to compete with Dimash's alien range. Sandy won because she was a well known (and talented) Diva but Dimash stole the show for years to come. So yeah the performers range from super super stars to new but super super talented. Still it afforded Dimash that great platform he needed to go quasi-national.
