His vocal skills are among the most skilled and nuanced of ALL time and genres, right up there with Ella, Aretha, Nina and Louis ❤ So nuanced in fact, one can easily miss the little twists and trails at the end of phrases. You’re right: they imply SO much more possibility… My wife and I were walking down the street way back then, around the corner from the Plaza Hotel when we recognised Mick and Simply Red walking toward us. We all locked eyes and smiled as we passed. The next evening they were on SNL 🎉

My husband and I have seen over 100 bands since the early 70's and Simply Red would be in our top five. He sounded as good live as his recordings. Saw them in a smaller venue with great acoustics. Jose Stone was being featured that night in her first trip to North America. She was only 17. She did 4 or 5 songs and blew the audience away. It was a great night.

The first few times I heard it I thought it was new Carly Simon! 😄 It was right around the time she'd made a comeback with "Coming Around Again" and when he does the lines "I'll keep holding on..." with the background vocals it sounds just like her. I ended up getting all their singles and several of their albums through the years. You should try "Something Got Me Started"...was big in the clubs when I was DJ'ing.
