Exactly... the forst time you hear a Rush song, you just sort of take it all in at once. Then I listen again and try to focus on the drums. Then I listen again and try to focus on the bass. Then I listen again and try to focus on the guitar. Then I listen again and try to focus on the lyrics. A few dozen more play throughs and I'm still noticing new things... little fills and flourishes... rhythmic interplay between bass and drums, or tonal interplay between bass and guitar. Just an incredible group of world class musicians.

@@ericelander9936 That didn't come out exactly as I meant. What I meant to say is that one can go 60 songs deep with Zep before there's any significant drop off in great music. I'm sorry but Rush can't boast that kind of deep catalog. Sure Rush released a lot of LPs. but only a few of them contained top shelf tunes from start to finish. Rush at their best were phenomenal, but they were not as prolific as Zep. Also, few would put Rush in the top 3 greatest bands of all time, whereas with Zep it's pretty much a given. I grew up with Rush in Toronto and saw them live countless times. Great band, but not quite in the same league as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Stones etc. Rush are definitely in the top 2 or 3 Prog Rock bands of all time. Maybe even No. 1, or at least in the same company as Genesis, Yes, ELP etc..
Remember, there are only 3 members in this band. You should see the percussion section. This concert was completely unbelievable. This was one of the best concerts I've ever seen. ❤

Neil is the G.O.A.T.!!!
This song is Neil’s lament about being in the limelight!
@rumourhats
20 күн бұрын
Was it? I mean, it was written *before* Moving Pictures blew up. Unless Neil couldn't even handle small cult-fame.
Geddy Lee is a beast, just as were Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart. Geddy is the only musician I've ever seen that could play bass, the foot organ, and sing all at the same time. They were phenomenol.
'Limelight' was Rush drummer Neil Peart's confessions about his struggle w/ fame... Growing up in Canada, Peart was a shy, tall and awkward kid who couldn't ice skate or play sports; he was a bookworm and preferred to read ... and as a rock fan in his teens, he was mocked by his peers... Drums became a hobby and he was admired for his playing for the first time and that became his passion. When he joined Rush in 1974, Peart had finally found his place musically and it took a few years of struggle before Rush experienced commercial success by around 1977... But w/ success came unwanted attention from thousands of fans and Peart was not prepared to handle the crush of fame. Rush fans noticed that Neil Peart seemed the most isolated of the 3 members... he was not comfortable meeting fans and having praise heaped on him... He elaborated later that he liked being appreciated or admired... but anything beyond, like adulation and devotion, would "creep him out" and felt "wrong"... He wasn't comfortable w/ strangers approaching him or knocking on his hotel room and wanting his time and attention, and as a result, he would withdraw because he was embarrassed. He didn't mean any harm and appreciated playing for the fans... but Peart was a shy fellow and even as an adult, he never got over his insecurities... not because he was "full of himself"... 'Limelight' was Peart's way of explaining to Rush fans that this was his mindset and it was not out of pride or malice that he acted that way.

Beautifully written to offer more context about Neil the human being, and the many ppl in life who feel the way he did, similarly, outside the limelight. How much more he must have felt in that limelight, and a testament to his passion and love for drumming, for music, to create and to express his messages to the World. I greatly admire soulful artists like Neil, like Rush as a creative collaboration of hearts and minds. And Getty’s vocals are fantastic!

I don't think they struggled. No more than the Grateful Dead. They played what they wanted and the fan base loved them. When commercial "radio play" success came, they merely introduced new people into an ever expanding universe.
Geddy's FAT tones during the solo are so gooooood.
Love Rush and was so lucky to see them numerous times. Still heartbroken about Neil. Red Barchetta is a personal favorite. Love the devoted Rush fans!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Rush when the tools were very sharp. Yes, Rush fans are not stupid. Its intelligent music. And you can listen to it for decades. Lyrics are complex enough to not get tiresome.

I still remember where I was and what I was doing when I first heard this album.
The lyric "For those who wish to seem, those who wish to be" is a paraphrasing of the Roman philosopher and statesman Cicero. Esse Quam Videri, "To be, rather than to seem." The phrase is found in Cicero's essay On Friendship (Laelius de Amicitia, chapter 98). Virtute enim ipsa non tam multi praediti esse quam videri volunt ("Few are those who wish to be endowed with virtue rather than to seem so"). Esse Quam Videri is also the state motto of North Carolina, and a host of school and organizations around the world.

i was very lucky to meet Neil when i was 14 after a show on the tour for this album...I was learning drums at the time & rarely for him he came up to me with pair of his sticks & encouraged me to keep going, this story made it into "The Day I was There" written by Richard Houghton.I am now 58 & listen to Rush most days
Rush Rules! Neil Peart was one of the greatest drummers ever RIP ❤ and Geddy Lee is is genius on all instruments and vocals 😊
One amazing band and sound for only three members in the band. They also have a GREAT live show every time I've seen them play.
What makes Rush even more impressive is that they were only a three piece band. Unbelievable sound from 3 neighborhood kids from Canada
This was definitely one of those songs that sitting down with the lyrics and reading them while listening you get the story. It was one of the most air played of their songs. They really have so much more music that is so good. I got to see them in 1992 on the Roll The Bones tour.

I see Rush I click! This is one of my favourite Alex Lifeson guitar solos. ❤ This song is about Neil's uncomfortableness in becoming famous. He was a shy and very private person. I am reading Geddy Lee's book My Effin Life right now and it is a fascinating read. I would suggest picking up a copy. Lots of great pics in it too. RIP... Neil Peart, named one of the best drummers in the world, many times. Rush is a psychedelic-intricate-complex-musical-rock-style, often with out of this world lyrics. Sometimes fantasy, sometimes not. Mostly, also written by Neil Peart! A Truly Great Canadian Band. Neil was an avid traveling motorcyclists; traveled many countries on 2 wheels; he wrote books about it. Such talent in Rush with Geddy Lee with his unique vocals, and Alex Lifeson on bass and rhythm at times. Geddy also played many instruments on their albums. As of 2023 - Rush has 44 albums, including 19 studio albums, 8 live albums, and 6 compilations. A prolific band. Glad you discovered them Polo. Listen to the song, "Tom Sawyer", preferably a live track!
Got this album in 1981 when I was 12, and it blew my mind. Red Barchetta is my favorite track on the album.
Amazing Power Trio!
One of the all time great albums.
You are correct. If you never heard this song, youd never get it the first time....its probably about the 10th time you hear it that you can mentally slow it down and understand how great it is.
Shout out to Geddy and his bass. Talent in this band is always top tier.
Love this song.
Rush - the most talented 3 piece band on the planet.... you've got to do more!!!
It's amazing when you think about it that there are only three members in this band.
All that music from three guys.
I love the whole album, in particular Camera's Eye. Keep on carrying on!!
This is one of my favourite songs ever. I have noticed everyone comments on the drums. But I hardly hear them. My mind is on the guitar, the bass and the voice. The drum doesnt even really register in my head. Makes me wonder what they hear that I don't.

You should check out a Limelight drums isolation track recording. I'm pretty sure there are some you can check out on KZread. When you hear that, you'll never hear this song the same way again. The Professor is "on point" with all of the beautiful variations and fills he employs as he plays all around the original beat laid down in the first few measures. From there it's all an exploration of variations and syncopated versions that seem to never truly repeat at any point in the song, and yet he somehow manages to keep the listener (and his bandmates) on the beat with utmost precision throughout.
One of the greatest bands ever. Top 5 drummer. Vocalist umatched in the ability to do 3 things at once, while being a top 10 bassist. Then a top 5 guitarist to top it all off. Amazing.

Geddy Lee also unmatched in vocals. Sorry. No one sounds like him.
You can listen to every track on every album of theirs multiple times and get something different from it each time, I had the pleasure of seeing them live, and it was an experience, not just a show.
I saw them on this tour in 81 and it was so amazing and hey dude, it's only 3 guys with the greatest drummer that ever lived RIP Neil. In concert every song sounded exactly as it did on the studio album. Absolute perfection.
Off 'Moving Pictures'."There's alot going on," you say? Most def for a three piece. I grew up listening to Rush. I've seen a bunch of cool bands, but they were my favorite to watch. Geddy Lee would sing, play bass, keyboards and foot pedals all at once. Alex Lifeson is a great guitarist with beautiful sounds. Then of course, there is Neil Peart, who I think is the best percussionist of all time. Some crazy and mesmerizing moments, especially from only a couple rows back. But 'Power Windows' is an incredible album. Every damn song is awesome. 'Big Money' was their hit off this album. But 'Mystic Rhythms' is bad ass. I'd also advise to always follow along with their lyrics. Much Love POLO!
Rush...nuff said!!!
I'm not a huge Rush fan, I don't know all their music, but this is my favorite song by them.
Loved that replay of the guitar solo. So emotive despite fairly sparse playing. Lifeson is a huge talent. Not to mention Peart on the drums or Lee on the bass / keys
I went to a LOT of concerts in this time period. I’ve never seen 3 men put out so much sound. The lyrics were astounding.
Rush is "Art Rock" at of its finest. My brother was a "Rush Freak" as they were called in the '80s. And Neil Peart was the God of Drums. My brother learned how to play every Rush song by ear by the time he entered college, with drums he bought on his own from pumping gas at the local Amoco. I learned the lyrics to every song passively by listening to my brother practice again and again. Every Rush concert is packed with air drummers and air guitarists, all wishing they could jump up on stage and jam alongside their rock idols. Not everyone gets Rush, but glad to see you enjoyed it.
"All the world is indeed a stage, we are merely players, performers and portrayers, each another's audience outside the gilded cage" absolutely brilliant explanation of life. No matter where you are or what you do you can learn from watching someone else and someone is learning by watching you. This has always been my absolute favorite RUSH song. The lyrics are captivating and brilliant, the musicianship is out of this world (typical for RUSH) and every time I hear this song I discover another nuance. Thanks for your reaction!!
RUSH is a highly Technical band, Neil Pert is one of the greatest drummers of all times! You can listen to the bass player Paul Geddey and hear something new each time. Each band member is easily in the top 5 for their instrument, RUSH is the most underrated band ever. That’s my opinion.
Limelight was released to the radio stations as the moving pictures promotional song. Then they played Tom Sawyer and it set the RUSH world upside down in the good way.
oooooo - one of my favs by them: THE LYRICS - SO, SO GOOD!!! RIP, PROFESSOR!! YOU are SO MISSED!! Thanks for the reaction, Polo!! HUGS!
Rush, have damn near perfected, classic rock song structure! 🎉
One of the best bands and really the greatest drummer of all time!
Best band ever. This whole album is simply a masterpiece.
Fell in love with Rush with 2112 when I was a kid and I'm a musician of several years and yeah I paused it right at the beginning to say good ear! You are right, the opening at least is in 7s. And you can do this if you can find a downbeat and then just force yourself to count 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 and 7 and Bam, right down on the one again just start the cycle over. We are so used to it going for that extra beat of 8 that in 7s, it jumps out early and surprises us every time by hitting the downbeat on the one early.
Fell in love with their music as a teenager even though it wasn't what I normally listened to. When I put one of the discs of the album into my computer there was a beautiful program that created illusions with moving dots on the disc alongside the album. I had to buy it three times I wore it out so much.
Rush was a major influence on Smashing Pumpkins
My absolute favorite Rush song.
The big single from this album was Tom Sawyer
My favourite to play of the handful of Rush tunes I learned in the late-mid 00s. Amazing song, band. 😊🤙🏼🎶❤🍁❤️✨️🕊
too bad you never got to see Rush live, they played in Cleveland many times over the years. I saw them 6 times, one of my favorite bands, no one like them.
Rush and Yes go hand in hand. Both great bands
Neil's playing 4 against 3 is brilliant. You don't even notice the meter changes because it always fits when the phrases line up. The Professor. RIP
Neil was creeped out by any sort of adulation and had a difficult time dealing with the fame that came from being the world's greatest drummer. This song is basically his thoughts on what one has to do to live the lifestyle without getting caught up in all the wackiness that comes with it. 😊
I've had the privilege of seeing them live, even if it was only twice. Once on the Signals tour, and again on the Power Windows tour. I saw the Signals tour in Frankfurt Germany. On both occasions I witnessed Geddy Lee playing harmonics on his bass with his left hand, keyboards with his right hand, working pedals with his feet, and singing. ALL. SIMULTANEOUSLY. Geddy is an uber-talented genius. Neil Peart on drums is untouchable. Alex Lifeson's guitar style is the perfect completion for this 3 piece ensemble. No other band quite like the progressive rock excellence of Rush.
Definitely more mainstream but still kicks ass. Good lyrics, drums, guitar solo… ❤
Limelight is Cinematic Music.
With 19 studio albums, they have a huge catalog to experience! ENJOY! We have!
Been a fan since the 70’s! This is my favourite of a deep catalog of classics!!
TOOL is the modern-day Rush. They sound like there are more than three people playing their songs.
Great choice Polo! I am not a huge Rush fan, but as a GEN X Canadian, I grew up listening to Rush on Rock Radio. This was on regular play. I would say Tom Sawyer and The Spirit of Radio were and still are the most played. Both are amazing as well.
