Freddie actually said that he had 4 seperate songs written out and found that they all worked together but was scared that the producer wouldn't be able to publish such a long track... Well, as you can hear, it worked and probably turned into one of the most memorable songs of Queen 🙂

When Freddie Mercury was a student at Ealing Art College in the late ‘60s, he wrote down some ideas for a song on scraps of paper; his friend, Chris Smith, has stated that Mercury played parts of songs he was writing. One of those pieces was known as “The Cowboy Song,” and it had lyrics that found their way into “Bohemian Rhapsody,” specifically the line “Mama…just killed a man.” In the 1970s, he shared the bits and pieces with his bandmates, drumming on the piano keys and explaining what he would insert into the gaps. He told his bandmates that he thought he had enough for three songs but was considering combining it all to create a single long song. And that is what he did, creating a six-minute suite which is divided into several sections, including a ballad segment, a hard rock portion, an operatic passage, and the final, dark coda.

Mercury referred to "Bohemian Rhapsody" as a "mock opera" that resulted from the combination of three songs he had written. It was recorded by Queen and co-producer Roy Thomas Baker at five studios between August and September 1975.

@Above Average MTGA Don't believe everything you saw in the Bo Rhap movie. There was a LOT of things that weren't really true but were written in to make a "better" story.

Those super high notes are from the Drummer, Roger Taylor who has an incredible voice. Freddie referred to Roger's voice as Dog Whistle Pitch. Brian May (guitar) is also a lead singer but with Freddie in Queen, Brian and Roger sang backup on most songs and just a few each where they sand lead. John Deacon (bass) did not like singing so he only occasionally sang back up with the others. This song is iconic as is this entire band. Two other performances you will probably like since you seem to understand musical talents would both be live (Queen is at the very top in live performances) Somebody To Love Live at Montreal 1981 and White Queen, live at Odeon Hammersmith December 24, 1975. Both are mind blowing performances and on Somebody to love, Roger sings a lot in that performance, too.

There’s a 20 minute video on here of their performance at Live Aid, and a lot of ppl think it’s the best music performance in history. It’s definitely very enjoyable and worth reacting to, and it goes by much quicker than you’d think.

It's not really a fair comparison between Queen and Pink Floyd as they are so different musically. I appreciate both for their artistry and pure talent, but to me it's the proverbial "apples and oranges"

Just love when youngins finally hear our music

One reason that this song is highly requested for reactions besides it being a fantastic song is because of the look on peoples faces with the switches in styles. People like me that was a teenager in the 70's and grew up with Queen love that look of amazement and awe that everyone gets during this song. This is the first song I look up when wanting to watch a reaction.

100% about the reactions. I wasn't a teenager until the 80's and even though I liked some of their music growing up (mainly from watching highlander), but it wasn't until I'd grown up and properly listened to their music that I realised what an amazing talent Freddie and Queen were and their live performances are on a different level to anything else I'd seen.

All four of them were songwriters and each of them wrote hit songs for the band. I would recommend you react to "White Queen" at the Hammersmith Odeon, "Love of my Life" at Wembley 1986, "Bicycle Races" and the album version of "March of the Black Queen" (it was too complex to do live in full in their day)! I know you already watched “Somebody to Love”, but If you watch the live from Montreal 1981 version of Somebody to Love, you can see the INCREDIBLE vocals of Roger (the blonde drummer you were mentioning). He has his eyes closed, while playing drums, & singing incredibly. Especially towards the end of the song. It’s so different than the video. The most amazing performance from Roger I’ve ever seen/heard. Absolutely worth the watch. Makes it seem like you’re listening to an entirely different song.

The beauty of bands from the 70s & early 80s is that any song could be a hit - regardless of length. It wasn't until the later 80s - early 90s that radio stations pretty much wouldn't even play anything over 4 minutes unless maybe after midnight.

You know several Queen songs, you just don't know you know them. Listen to We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions (all radio stations play them back to back) and then listen to Another One Bites the Dust. All played at every sports event around the world.

Wow, I didn’t know that “We are the Champions” was made by this group.

All music is from the 4 musicians. Back in the day, there were no computers to help with sound effects. They only had 24 track tape so they put numerous tracks down to create the choir sound. They didn't use back up singers and there were no extra musicians. Multi track work and genius of Freddie Mercury.

Queen is queen there will never be another queen . They are so unique they can do everything . There catalog is huge you need to go down the queen rabbit hole. React to queen live aid full concert live aid it will blow your mind.

It's simple why the 6 minutes went by so quickly for you....because you weren't bored. The music is quality and dynamic and UNIQUE.

If you see this comment..put headset on crank all these classic groups and realize these songs are over 50 years old... U can imagine how blown away 80s ppl were ... Thats like hesring a sing from 2070 today ...

This song was intensely personal to Freddie (every band member had number 1 hits, this was however the one that set them off to superstardom) . Freddie never said what it was about, he dodged that question. Roger (the Drummer, and the one with the dog whistle high note) says "its pretty obvious, except for the bit of nonsense in the middle" . Most of us believe this was Freddie working through his sexuality, and he killed the man who he was not, accepting in the end (any way the wind blows), who he is. The song is kind of working through the grief of this. Stage 1 Denial (Is this the real life? IS this just fantasy?) that slowly morphs into depression (momma, just killed a man, and also "I sometimes wish I had never been born at all") The opera is a little like bargaining (it seems to be the internal battle over his sexuality) The rock part is Anger (So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye? So, you think you can love me and leave me to die? Oh, baby, Can’t do this to me baby ) the Quiet final verse and outro is acceptance ("Nothing really matters to me, and of course Any way the wind blows) The thing about this song (and perchance Mr Mercury wanted this) is the way it effects the listener. Every one of us feels something different. Hell every time I listen to it, I get something different, likely depending on what I am going through at the time.

I've always thought this as well, David, in fact I've posted it a number of times. Given the timing of this song and the album and what was happening in his life, I always felt this was about Freddie finally coming to terms with who he was and knowing that it would kill off the man he was and hurt his parents who was conservative immigrants but in the end, he had to do it. The first line, Momma, just killed a man, put a gun against his head, pulled my trigger now he's dead" is definitely talking about himself to me. The whole song follows along that line if you listen to it. There is a lot of grief both for his family and knowing what this will do to his relationship with Mary. (JayShara, you have to hear Love of My Life live. It's his song to Mary although he never straight up says it and it's about him knowing that admitting his sexuality is going to lose him the love of his life. He called Mary the love of his life to the end and left her everything even though she married and had children with someone else.) Bohemian Rhapsody is a masterpiece because it can be applied to anyone's life. It's about making a change, killing the old for the new and knowing there will be consequences. This is the first song of Queen's that made them super stars. When it came out, we couldn't get enough of it. People demanded the radio stations play it all the time. It was like nothing we had ever heard. It was a masterpiece.

Diverse composition, absolutely talented. It seems like their composition was incorporated along the lines of sophistication with the type of music such as different keys, the change of tempo and bridging like you would have with the legendary composers Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. A little of the old type of composition blended into a new era for us to appreciate its diversity and sound. It's different but acceptably cool.

Personally I’ve always loved Queen(original line up) more than any other group in history. I feel like Freddie was one of those rare artists that could sing the phone book and I would still listen to it without getting bored. Queen is also one of those few bands that doesn’t really have a bad song in their catalog. R.I.P. Freddie We Miss You Darling!

Great reaction but I had to laugh when you said it seemed like Queen wasn't the cliched, partying, band. The thing about Queen is they had no genre. They did everything. For some harder rock, I'd suggest something like Stone Cold Crazy. Fat Bottomed girls, Hammer to Fall and for partying, listen to the studio version of Don't Stop me Now, Freddie's ode to hedonism and what was once called the happiest song in the world.

Queen was my first concert ever. They were AMAZING!!! I will never forget it. Nobody is like Queen. RIP Freddie!

I've grown to love this song more and more over time.

There were quite a few bands from that time period that were very open and experimental in their music. Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin come immediately to mind. But, Queen definitely followed their own path, and Freddie Mercury was a unique talent.

Freddie Mercury was an amazing vocalist. And every band member immensely talented. Queen was so versatile in the music they created.

Great reaction! No band ever harmonized as well as Queen. Fun fact: guitarist Brian May is an Astrophysicist, and sometime in the past 15 years or so he wrote a paper to keep up his professorship. Brilliant musicians and brilliant individuals.

May I please suggest you watch Under Pressure live at Wembley (the 5:56 minute version), Another One Bites The Dust live at Wembley '86, Don't Stop Me Now, and of course Live Aid which was awesome. My favourite Queen song is Don't stop me now apparently voted the most happest song ever.... Plus Barcelona he sang with sorry can't remember her name but she was a famous opera singer and opened the Olympics in Barcelona... I think it would blow you away xx

Hi Jay, This song is 47 years old. It was way beyond its time and sounded like nothing I had ever heard before. It took the UK by storm reaching number 1 and staying there for 9 weeks. An outstanding band!! If you want to hear another fantastic band that came out of the 70's you may want to try Dire Straits. Again absolutely outstanding musicians and their Alchemy live version of sultans of swing is mind blowing. Great to see young people appreciating older music. Awesome reaction. This is definitely one of the greatest rock songs ever from one of the greatest bands ever. Also have a look at their other songs, especially some of the lesser-known songs like Princes Of The Universe and Flash. As for the song, Freddie Mercury never gave an official explanation of the song's lyrics, but I once read the following interpretation. It's not the official one, but it struck me as a good one, so here goes: The lead up to the start of the song was that a gangster tried to rape his girlfriend, and in the tussle while trying to defend his girlfriend, he shot and killed the gangster. He then tells his mother what happened, and he was afraid of the repercussions, as the other gang members would be coming after him now. In the middle of the song he expresses his fear at the repercussions. The other gangsters catch up to him, and despite his pleading, they won't let him go. He laments that the devil (Beelzebub) has set aside a devil just to torment him. He proceeds to have a gun battle with the remaining gang members and kills them too, but then his girlfriend rejects him because of the killings. At first he is angry with her, but then he gets a bit depressed. He realizes that he will have to leave, as his life here in his hometown is over. End of the song. I hope you like this explanation. At least it made sense to me. Oh, and do keep on reacting to Bon Jovi videos. They were awesome too, albeit in a different way.

I live in the UK and I can remember being a teen in the early 00's and EVERYONE knew the lyrics. And waiting for shows and concerts and standing in the crowds waiting for things to start, this would come on and everyone waiting would stop their conversations to sing along. There is a video somewhere of people waiting for a Green Day concert in Hyde (???) Park singing along and its eerie how rapidly people go from chatting to singing

Yes I too wish that I would have attended some of Queen's concerts but they never toured close to my small city. I seen many of their concerts on TV and they were 1st rate talent and entertainers every time. Another cool one to watch is "Killer Queen" official video, where Freddie just radiates awesome charisma.

To get a great feel of the band in action u should watch queens playing at "live aid". They have about a 20 minute show and it's amazing! Have a great holiday season :-)

At the time this was released they were told that it was too long and would not get much air time. I remember at the time within days it was on every radio show of channels that played this music and shortly after on every jukebox and being played in the clubs.

"Killer Queen" is one of their first hits (maybe the first one). It's also one of my favorite Queen songs. A sleeper of theirs that nobody has reacted to as far as I know is, "Tie Your Mother Down". It's fun song too.

This is Freddie's legacy, along with both versions of Somebody to Love.

Though we see Freddy and the others in their stage garb.... music back then wasn't about the image of a person or the band.... it was about them combining their time and effort with their musical and vocal talent in the hopes of bringing audience's to their knees. I've seen a few underwhelming concerts in my day, but I've also seen many concerts that just blow the whole audience away with astounding live performances so good it makes the same bands studio recorded hits seem pale in comparison. I never thought these talanted bands would disappear. I just assumed that good creative music would be around forever. After all.... back in the 60,s 70's 80,s 90,s there was no let up of talent. Every few days some band or artist regardless of genre had a hit on the radio. The good news is that we still have videos and their recordings available. Great reaction!
