Honestly the lyrics are pretty self explanatory in this one. No hidden messages or deeper meaning. It’s about how we grow older and start facing our own mortality, when we’re young we feel like we have all the time in the world, and then when we get older, suddenly time seems to move faster, and our time is limited. Just coming to terms with that.

This song is from their 1973 album "Dark Side of the Moon"! Most of their music is incredibly different and futuristic even for today! David Gilmour is the lead singer and lead guitarist playing that solo! One thing to note whenever David gilmour's playing a guitar solo it's bad juju to interrupt the solo!! You'll hear this from a lot of different commenters!! Rodger Waters bass player and main Lyricist Richard Wright keyboardist & Nick Mason drummer!! Those four guys made all the sound you just heard from 1973 recordings in analog time before computerization!!

@@daveeezy184 Hi Daveeezy, I'll give my two cents on this - There's no wrong way, because you're putting yourself out there knowing you don't know this genre. The guitar solos in many rock songs, if the guitarist is special, like David Gilmour, are a purposeful effort to move people emotionally and it's startling for fans to interrupt it.

@@daveeezy184 This comes from a good place as you are very likable,my friend but NEVER EVER, EVER interrupt a Guitar solo, let alone from one of The World's Greatest guitarists=David Gilmour. I saw them perform this in 1973 in London with 18,000 others so 50 years ago. You see if a Reactor pauses during a guitar solo it demonstrates that they have no FEEL for the music. It is like being with your Girlfriend and things are happening and before the climax, you stop everything to ask her to subscribe and follow you on Instagram. 😀 The Heartbeat starts life and now LISTEN to the lyrics as it marks the different stages of a person's life.Good Luck.

The Dark Side Of the Moon album is all about things in life that drive us to madness. This one is about the breathless pace of time and the eventual futility of all of our hard work trying to keep up. Its not light stuff. The second part of the song is actually a reprise of Breathe from earlier in the album. It represents the end of life (the church bells are for a funeral). Then the next song is about death and leaving your body. The thing is you really want to hear the songs all in a row, since its a concept album. Edit...good gawd I had a lot of typos in this comment. Apologies to any/all who read it.

Pink Floyd formed in the late 60s in London. Lots of history you need to read about them but this track comes from a concept album called Dark Side of the Moon released in 1972. It's about mental problems that people suffer and this track will make more sense if you listen to the whole album. I don't think its ever been outside the top 100 since its release. One of the biggest selling albums worldwide ever. And it is an absolute masterpiece from one of the greatest bands in the World .

The album this is from is about the stress and pressures of life. So this song fits that theme. The song is about becoming aware that as age grows time shrinks. The pressure to make each hour, each day, each year count increases. The long intro generates impatience but at 6 minutes, the song seems to end too soon. But then it seamlessly segues to, "Breathe Reprise" which is the third verse to the song, "Breathe" which comes at the beginning of the album. The background vocals foreshadow the next song in the album, "The Great Gig In the Sky." The heart beat also starts and ends the album. That would be a great place to begin a Pink Floyd exploration.

So, you try to make up for it, but every year seems to be getting shorter. Never seem to find the time. Then before you know it, you're dead. "The time has come. The `song` (your life) is over. Ok so here is some 411. This album holds the all time record for being on the top 100 best selling albums each year of all time. David Gilmore is the singer and lead guitar player, and his solo during “comfortably numb” at the Pulse concert proves he is one of the best, all time. Nick Mason is the drummer and he is one of the most underrated drummers ever. Roger Waters is the brains and brawn of the early years but had to yield to David Gilmore for what became obvious reasons. This album is often at, or near the top of the Best Album ever polls. Deservedly so IMO. Maybe number two or three. In any event, for me, what makes this song, this album so so great, is that it still sounds fresh fifty years after it was released. And that I still love hearing it over and over after five decades. Freakin awesome!!

Other good Pink Floyd stuff: Basically anything else from Dark Side of the Moon, "Wish You Were Here," "Fearless," "San Tropez," "Free Four." (Or if you want something REALLY weird, "Several Species of Small Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict" is. Exactly what it says on the tin. XD) Meanwhile, some of my other favorites: Todd Rundgren (been performing and producing since the 1960s, defies categorization but mostly rock/prog) - start with "Just One Victory" Barenaked Ladies (alt rock, '90s-present) - start with "Brian Wilson" if you've covered the Beach Boys, "What a Good Boy" if you haven't (And if you haven't covered the Beach Boys, start with "Good Vibrations.") Andrew Bird (...prog folk I guess???, 2000s-present) - start with "Heretics" or "Pulaski at Night" Moody Blues (prog, 1960s-70s was their big era) - start with all of Days of Future Passed or "Question" Electric Light Orchestra (pop/rock/prog, musical successor to the Beatles) - start with "Tightrope" Emerson, Lake & Palmer (prog, 1970s) - start with "Trilogy" or "The Endless Enigma" (Part 1, Fugue and Part 2 as a set) the Who (rock powerhouse, 1960s-'78 for the original lineup, scattered work after that) - start with literally anything from Who's Next, but "Baba O'Riley" is traditional Little Feat (Southern rock, 1970s) - start with "Dixie Chicken" and "Tripe Face Boogie," together, Waiting for Columbus version (They are at their PEAK here, it's a live album, these 15 minutes will not be wasted.) Jethro Tull (this is a band not a person, prog-adjacent, 1970s) - start with "Locomotive Breath" Talking Heads (new wave, 1970s-'80s) - WATCH the live performance of "Life During Wartime" the Band (Americana rock, 1960s-'70s) - start with "Chest Fever" (studio version) or "The Shape I'm In" (The Last Waltz, which is a monster of a live album)

If you like this, move on to the next song on the album, "Great Gig in the Sky." I have seen music reactors moved to tears by it.

I love that you’re feeling the song and totally ok when you pause & even go back on sections that move you. But for the LOVE OF MUSIC please read the lyrics that the artist worked so hard to write. This song is about your entire life. The message is to not waste Time!

I didn’t quite “get” Pink Floyd as it is more of an acquired taste until I smoked a doobie. Then I was “Oh now I get it!”

It's about Life and Death, and the regrettably short distance between start and finish. Not so incidentally, it's not alright to interrupt a David Gilmour Solo.Cheers

@@daveeezy184 I know that when I was on 10 grams of Mazatepic strain mushrooms, I was in so deep that music was irrelevant once I hit peak. I was starring at the blue sky while laying in my backyard and the stars and stripes appeared in full color with A bald eagle next to it, that was extremely powerful. there was an entity that was saying that America is The serpent. I was fighting with this thing telling it that America is a beautiful idea and it shall not be destroyed. A quote that came out of that trip was...... "The serpent dances upon the foundation of fools." That quote was based on a drawing of a clown standing upon the foundation of the zombies wandering aimlessly banging their heads upon brick walls. I actually saw dragons ripping humans apart and the skulls of the dead forming this foundation. I just let my hand go, let it flow. It became too intense and I had to walk away. I went outside to breathe fresh air, as I layed on the ground again, I could feel a presence, I started to speak and it was with a Russian accent, I even started to hum a tune. I went into the house spoke to my wife and she recorded me as I was speaking, I couldn't stop with the accent.... eventually it subsided. I could speak for awhile and then the wave hit and I was out to lunch again. The visuals of entities appeared again, this time it was a Gorgon sticking his tongue out, everything was in liquid gold with Pyramids blending and flowing. I also had this feeling of the sum of the multiples are me....... In 2020 I had 5 trips and none of them were under 5 grams.

These are the stages of an english man's life. At the beginning, after the clocks, there were two heartbeats. One low pitched and slow (Mom) one higher and faster (Baby). Then when he started singing the baby was born and growing. 2nd verse young adult wasting time partying and kicking around in his hometown. The he wakes up and 10 years are gone. Oh crap, I better try to catch up. But I older and get tired easily. In the end he realizes what little he contributed to society and then he dies. You should check out the version with lyrics. That will help a lot.
