Love your reactions! PTX is amazing live as well. For the first time I saw them in concert last year twice (Summer tour and then Christmas tour) and I was speechless. They have a huge catalog of cover "upgrades" and amazing original songs that they wrote. All are amazing! At some point, you should check out their beginning on the Sing Off, Season 3. They are the OG in the acapella arena. Home Free won the next season and PTX had returned for that season to offer advice and encouragement to the final contestants. Looking forward to more reactions!

I think you'll really enjoy their cover of John Lennon's "Imagine". One thing to note thought, it features the group's original bass, Avi Kaplan. Anything prior to 2018 will be Avi, after will be Matt (the young man in the white jacket). The amazing thing about PTX is they're like musical Barbie Dolls, totally interchangeable. Scott (bariton) and Matt (bass) can switch places when necessary. Kirstie and Mitch can change places as well between Tenor, Alto and Soprano. Whenever you feel you're ready for your first huge Mitch slap, you might want to watch their cover of Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli's version of "The Prayer".

Your comments about Kirstie are right on. All five members are needed to make the songs work, but something about Kirstie’s vocals, background and lead, are like a secret sauce. Recommend their original video of Be My Eyes, co-written and lead by Kirstie. I’m a Pentaholic, but Home Free is an amazing group. Recommend their cover of Man Of Constant Sorrow.

I love watching people discover this group for the first time. I am about to watch your first video you did for them. I have been a fan of Pentatonix for so many years and can listen to any song and get chills by how good it is. Any song you do will blow your mind but if you want something that will also knock your socks off: Daft Punk. It was their first ever Grammy win and it's out of this world...LITERALLY. If you want an original to react to Sing or Take Me Home would be good ones to start with.

You’ve gained quite a few subscribers in such a short time, well done! You also did a great job with the names, and you got a much better example of what Kirstie can do in this song. A few more to add to you list would be Can You Feel the Love Tonight from The Lion King, their cover of Gold by Kiara (sitting on a couch in the studio, minimal production, original bass Avi Kaplan), Prayers for This World (written by the great Diane Warren) and their ‘90s Dance Medley when you’re ready for a bop. I’m enjoying your reactions very much, thanks. Peace …

The little doo-doo-doos are "bell tones." Other a capella groups do them too, but Pentatonix has made then a signature sound. Yes, Kirstie (or her "wallet name," Kirstin). The three in the middle, are sometimes known as The Trio, from their high school group (yes, they have been singing together since high school, and in fact they had known each other on and off since grade school - they were all in community theater in Arlington, Texas): Kirstin Madonado (alto+soprano), Scott Hoying (baritone), Mitch Grassi (tenor/countertenor). You've already been introduced to beatboxer/cellist/tenor Kevin Olusola, and the man with the beautiful rich bass-baritone is Matt Sallee. In earlier songs (pre-2018), you will see original member Avi Kaplan as bass.

  • @Gwennedd
    @Gwennedd5 ай бұрын

That was great!! Yes, you got the names right. I'm so glad you're enjoying this group. The new (to you) bass is Matt Sallee and although his vocal range is lyric baritone, his range is phenomenal. He has a great falsetto and his bass notes are constantly getting lower. Yes, Voice Play (the theatre kids) and Home free ( the country guys) plus PTX who are generally the pop genre are the trifecta of modern a capella. More suggestions: Imagine, Love Again ( original), Mad World, Happy Now, Come Along.

There are so many PTX songs and none of them will let you down. I almost want to say, look at their catalog and choose something that strikes your fancy or makes you curious. I mean, the usual first reactions are Bohemian Rhapsody, Daft Punk (first Grammy winner of three wins and five nominations), and Hallelujah, but there are so many that don’t get quite as many views or recommendations that are equally great. They have covers like this one, original music, 8 albums worth of Christmas music, medleys, collaborations and every member has incredible solo projects, plus Superfruit (which is the duo of Scott and Mitch). PTX”evolutions” of various artists are really good and if you’re curious about where it all began, there are videos of their first performances as Pentatonix on season 3 of The Sing Off, which they won in 2011. Mitch, Kirstie and Scott sang together prior to that as a trio, but not as PTX.

Get use to being astounded by Pentatonix/ They are just on a separate level from everyone else. They are very unique in that that they leave their egos ourtside the studio and decide which voice sounds best for each part. Scott often sings lead but that is because most songs are written for the male bariton voice. All could sing solo including Kevin who has a beautiful tenor voice. I still speechless after listening to most of their music over and over again. It a treat to be able to hear both the words and music without the band over playing/ Some Suggested songs are Amazing grace, Say Something, The PRAYER, AND THEIR NEWEST VIDEOS: KISSED BY A ROSE AND OH HOLY NIGHT. tHERE ARE A LOT OF LIVE PERFORMANCES OF THEIR TOURS ON YOU TUBE. cHECK OUT mILE'S RUEBENS CHANNEL/

One more Pentaholic sub here for your journey. I have been listening to them for several years and been fortunate enough to see them live a few times. As a 60 year-old it is rare that I find modern music that I truly enjoy from "mainstream" artists. PTX (along with all the individual members side/solo projects) and Home Free are the exceptions to that. Even songs that I had dismissed are reborn after going through the creative process of these groups. While their covers are all imcredible, do not sleep on their originals.

The Five Faces of New Pentaholics 1. The most common is the Mitch Slapped. Commonly found when Mitch is heard for the first time in Hallelujah, The Prayer, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, Creep and doing Aha! at the Star Vista. 2. The Wide Eyed Look of Disbelief. Normally found when you hear their Wall of Sound. Found when listening to Mary Did You Know, Imagine, Amazing Grace, The Prayer, Mad World and the Avalanche or Tsunami of O Holy Night. 3. The I Didn’t Want It to End face. Most commonly found after listening to the 90s Dance Medley. It can also be found after listening to all their medleys and evolutions. 4. The Teary Eyed Look. This is commonly found when listening to an emotional song of theirs or just the sheer beauty of their work. Commonly found when listening to Mary Did You Know, Hallelujah, Amazing Grace, Imagine, The Prayer, Prayers for This World, O Holy Night and most especially Thank You. 5. The What Did I Just Hear Face. Happens when Pentatonix starts strong, or when you hear a really special note or Kevin sound. Is usually accompanied by rewinding the video or song to make sure your ears really heard what they heard. Those times are too many to list, but the most common rewind at the start moment is the beginning of Sound of Silence.

Oh, Holy Night 9. Daft Punk Melody 10. 90’s Dance Melody There was one member change. The bass, Matt, replaced Avi in 2017 I believe.

Great reaction (again). Try their original Be My Eyes where Kirsty is the lead singer. She was also the main composer of this lovely song. Another spectacular vocal group is South Korea's Forestella. They're a crossover male quartet who are known as The Kings Of Harmony. Listen to their equally good cover of The Sound Of Silence. Then I suggest you react to both Pentatonix's and Forestella's equally brilliant cover of Bohemian Rhapsody. With Pentatonix, Mitch takes the lead here and his voice is gorgeous.

There's something strange that a lot of us have noticed about Pentatonix (not "the" Pentatonix, BTW): the song we're listening to right now is always better than the last one, no matter which order we hear them in. Objectively, the current song can't always be better than the last one. What seems to be going on is that the current song is always good, and it's the one that's in our ears right now, which makes it "best" - for the moment. It's hard to distinguish better from worse when they all rate 11 stars out of 10. Those "doo-doo-doos" you're hearing are called "bell tones." They're one of the ways Pentatonix simulates a musical instrument, particularly piano, and Simon and Garfunkel frequently used piano accompaniment with this song as well as guitar. Yes, you got Mitch's and Kevin's names right. And yes, in addition to having perfect pitch Kevin seems to have an inner metronome that's dead on. And yeah, Matt's bass drops are spectacular. Why five? Scott answered that question in an interview once. He said that it's because four wouldn't be enough and six would be too many. However, there is a historical reason for it, which means its time to tell you more about the origin of Pentatonix. Kirstin, Mitch, and Scott all grew up in Arlington, Texas. (I believe that Kirstin prefers that only personal friends use her nickname, though there's some disagreement on this point.) All of them were involved with community musical theater as children, and Mitch met both Scott and Kirstin there (separately) when he was still a pre-teen, and became friends with each of them. However, Scott and Kirstin didn't meet each other until they were fourteen and in the same high school class. All three were choir geeks (duh), and they quickly became best friends in high school. There was some kind of singing contest to meet the stars of _"Glee,"_ and the three of them wanted to enter, so they formed a trio which they named "The Trio." (I know; not very imaginative. They're somewhat better with that now.) They lost the contest, but they kept The Trio together anyway; they performed at school functions and occasionally on local television. Pentaholics still refer to these three as "the trio," and the trio is the heart of Pentatonix. Kirstin and Scott were a year ahead of Mitch; they graduated in 2010, when Mitch was still in eleventh grade, and both went away for their freshman year of college. Scott went to the University of Southern Califonia, and Kirstin went to the University of Oklahoma with a full ride scholarship. Scott is a very outgoing person, so he immediately began looking around for extracurricular activities where he could meet people and make new friends, and he found an award-winning a cappella group named SoCal VoCals, which he joined. While there he met Ben Bram, who at the time was a coach on NBC's a cappella competition show named _"The Sing-Off."_ A cappella groups would audition for the show, and those that passed appeared throughout the season. There was a panel of three judges, all professional musicians, who would give their reactions to each performance. Along the way some groups would be eliminated, narrowing the field, and at the end of the season viewers would be invited to vote on a winner. The winning group would receive $200,000 and a recording contract with Epic, a minor subsidiary of Sony, the show's sponsor. Scott was intrigued. He thought The Trio could be competitive, and if they could get a recording contract they could have a career doing what they most loved, with the people they most loved. So he talked to Kirstin, who thought his idea had promise, and at the end of their first year of college the two of them headed back to Arlington to be there for Mitch's graduation and to talk with Mitch about Scott's idea. Meanwhile, back in Arlington Mitch had been having a very difficult year. His best friends weren't there, and as an out-of-the-closet young gay man with an unusually high voice he was being seriously bullied. And unfortunately, since the bullying was ostensibly for his voice he was quickly developing the notion that there was something wrong with his voice and that no one would want to hear him sing. So when Scott presented his idea Mitch was on board; it was a way to get away from the bullies. He had doubts about his ability to carry his weight in the group, because of the bullying, but he was willing to try and if Scott and Kirstin said they could win, well, maybe they could. So with everyone agreed, Scott called Ben Bram to find out how to arrange for an audition, and this is where they met their first setback. _"The Sing-Off"_ had a size requirement; the minimum size allowed was five. The Trio needed two new members and a new name. They were stumped. Ben suggested that they'd profit from adding a rhythm section: a bass and a beatboxer, and he knew the perfect person to recommend for the bass, a guy named Avi Kaplan. They talked to Avi, and he was very interested, so that took care of the bass, but where to find the beatboxer? Ben didn't have any suggestions. So in desperation they typed "beatboxer" into a KZread search box and the first hit they got was a black guy playing a classical piece on the cello and beatboxing at the same time. And all of them said, "Wow! He's the one! How can we get in touch with him?" They were in luck. At the time KZread had something called KZread messages, which would allow private messages between members (now discontinued), so they sent Kevin a private message: "Hey! We really love your stuff, and we wonder if you'd be interested in flying across the country to join four strangers to audition for an a cappella competition show on television?" And Kevin messaged them back: "Normally I'd be there in a heart beat; I love a cappella and have been in a cappella groups before. But right now I'm studying for my final exams for my pre-med major from Yale." Oh. That sounded pretty definite; better keep looking. So they kept looking, and they found someone, but he was no Kevin Olusola. Oh well; you work with what you have. And two weeks later Kevin messaged them again: "Good news! I just graduated. If the gig's still open I can fly out." He arrived the day before their audition. Mitch had to skip his graduation ceremony to attend the audition. But even with just a day of rehearsal they still passed the audition; they were in. Oh, yes, the name. Pentatonix is named for the pentatonic scale, which has five (penta) tones just as Pentatonix has five (Penta) singers. In other words, it's a fancier way of saying they're now "The Quintet." 😂 Pentatonix appeared throughout season three of _"The Sing-Off,"_ and eventually won. All those performances are available on KZread and are well worth watching, preferably in order so you can see how they grew throughout the season. Some of them are as good as anything they've done since (which is saying a lot) and are only available in those old videos. So, they'd won _"The Sing-Off,"_ complete with recording contract. Time to move to California permanently and begin recording. And a week later Epic reneged on the contract, saying that they didn't know how to market a cappella. But at this point Pentatonix weren't willing to give up; they WANTED that career they'd been working toward. So they pooled their winnings and lived frugally. The four men shared two apartments, to cut down on expenses. They arranged music and rehearsed every day, and when they had a song ready they used their iPhones to record themselves anywhere they could find good acoustics, and sometimes in places with acoustics that were just okay. And they posted to KZread. Their fans from _"The Sing-Off"_ quickly found them there, and subscribed, and they began to get more views and more subscribers, and to pick up a few patrons. In fact, they were going viral. And Sony noticed, and approached them with an offer: Perhaps Pentatonix would like a recording contract with Madison Gate, another minor subsidiary? Hmmm. 🤔 Would they like a recording contract? Might have to think about that for a second or two. Darn right they'd like a recording contract! And then came "Daft Punk Medley," and Pentatonix won their first Grammy. And again, Sony took notice, and approached Pentatonix: "We've been thinking about it and we believe you might find a better fit with our flagship label, RCA. Are you interested?" They've been with RCA ever since. They go on tours world wide and perform to sold-out venues. They put out at LEAST one album a year, frequently more. One has gone Gold and one has gone Platinum twice. They have three Grammys and recently received a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. And they are the only a cappella band to have won so much as ONE Grammy, or to be represented on the Walk of Fame. And BTW, you might want to watch the Grammys tomorrow; Pentatonix will be performing, and they've been nominated for a fourth Grammy.

Pentatonix was first (and best) new acp. Home Free is great, if you like country. Voiceplay is fun, Modern juke box is good. Pentatonix does some btx (butter x dynamite) and j-pop groups. Yeah, Kirsty, you got it right, except she made her voice for this song. She is a world class singer.

Both of the videos you've reacted to have been relatively newer, so they've had the "new" bass singer, Matt Sallee, who joined the group in 2017/2018 (depending on how you define it). It's probably time for you to see the original bass singer, Avi Kaplan, who was with the group from it's beginning until he left amicably in fall 2017. Suggestions for Pentatonix with Avi: Hallelujah (their most popular video), Daft Punk (their first of 3 Grammy awards (I hope to be able to edit this tomorrow after the Grammy awards tonight, where they're up for another one)), Somebody That I Used to Know, Say Something, Problem.

Home Free songs: Man of Constant Sorrow, Ring of Fire (featuring Avi Kaplin), Brother, American Pie (with Don McLean), Elvira (with Oak Ridge Boys), The Gambler, Fulsom Prison Blues, Sea Shanty Medley, Skull & Bones (commissioned by Ubisoft), Travelling Soldier (tear-jerker), Champagne Tastes on a Beer Budget (original), Bohemian Rhapsody (teaser sample), Quarantine (from the beginning of COVID-19 lock-downs), Hillbilly Bone, then Mayday. Speaking of Bohemian Rhapsody, you have to check out PTX's full-length version. When checking out Voice Play, review: Oogie Boogie Song, This is Halloween, The Dragonborn Comes, Halo theme, Valhalla Calling. While you are checking out a capalla groups, also take a look at the Bass Gang, a newer group with an international casting: Tomi P. (Eastern Europe), Peter Barber (American), Bobby B(American), and Marwan Ayman (Egyptian).

Be warned it is a bottomless rabbit hole. Be prepared to cast aside many of your old favorites to be replaced by a PTX upgrade. Each member is insanely talented and versatile. But, like power rangers, when combined their abilities explode exponentially. Check out LA LA Latch, 90's Dance Medley, Run To You, Blinding Lights to just start getting an idea of what they can do.

Yes, Home Free is worth listening to. They also got their start on _"The Sing-Off,"_ where they won season 4. Unfortunately (IMO) Home Free suffers from the fact that they're an all male group. You nailed it when you said that Kirstin's voice was made for this song. More accurately, Kirstin's voice was made for singing, and it's impossible to capture the full potential of the human voice when you exclude half of the human race. (I make the same crticism of Citizen Queen, which is an all female a cappella group.) My personal favorite song from Home Free is "Ring of Fire," which featured a guest singer, Avi Kaplan. To my ear, with the two basses, Home Free sounded EXACTLY like Johnny Cash on that song. But there are other pentaholics who are bigger home fries (Home Free's fans call themselves "home fries") than I am; they can give you better recommendations.

Home Free is a great group as well yes. I've said that God sent down 10 voices from the Angels, gave 5 to Pentatonix and 5 to Home Free. Every now and then one member will collaborate with the other group for a song, but I would love to see all 10 come together! It's hard to compare who is better because they both nail it with their own version of things. I am both a Penataholic and a Homefry....lol

Ok for Home Free, my suggestion would be Ring Of Fire (Johnny Cash Cover) features Avi Kaplan, the original Bass singer of Pentatonix - the Bass singer you've seen in your reactions to PTX is Matt Sallee, an amazing singer in his own right. Home Free is more country centred and they are incredible.
