He also has such a cool soulful style. He makes it sound and look as if it's a heartache for him to deliver this lyrics: he makes it feel like he is "struggling" to deliver and then when he does, he immediately "chokes" his own voice almost as if he is trying not to listen to what he is saying. If you know what I mean

Great reaction Scribe! The drummer for this song is Jeff Porcaro (RIP) who is the drummer for the song Rosanna by Toto. The bass player is Louis Johnson of the Brothers Johnson who had disco hits like Stomp and Strawberry Letter 23. Steve Lukather plays guitar and he was the guitar player of Toto, and Michael's sister Maureen is singing background vocals! There's so much history going on in this song there was no way this was not going to be a hit!

1st solo hit! 😎 Produced by Ted Templeman and Larry Waronker. Ted Templeman is best known as the producer for The Doobie Brothers, Montrose and Van Halen. Larry Waronker is best known as the producer for Gordon Lightfoot. Michael McDonald permitted Warren G to sample this. Michael McDonald sang a lot in the 1970s and in the 1980s. Michael McDonald joined The Doobie Brothers in 1975. He wrote What a Fool Believes with Kenny Loggins. The song won a Grammy. In 1980, Michael McDonald sang backing vocal in the Christopher Cross song Run Like the Wind. In 1982, I Keep Forgetting was a big hit. In 1983 he wrote Yah Mo Be There with the late James Ingram and Quincy Jones. In 1984, MM finished the lyrics to I'll Wait. Official credits: I'll Wait written by Van Halen + Michael Macdonald. In 1986, MM sang On My Own with Patti Labelle, and MM sang backing vocal in I'll Be Over You with Toto. In 1982, Greg Phillinganes also played with Lionel Richie. Steve Lukather played guitar here. In addition to MM, Steve Lukather played guitar in the studio for his band Toto, Chicago and Michael Jackson (Thriller). Steve Lukather, being in his band Toto, worked like a dog in 1982! LOL Suggested next video: Michael McDonald and Patti Labelle sing On My Own. RIP Jeff Porcaro, drummer for I Keep Forgetting.

This song brings back so many good memories. I was in my early teens when it came out. Michael McDonald's voice is just the embodiment of blue-eyed soul. He did a lot of backing vocals for other artists, too. You can hear him on "Ride Like the Wind" by Christopher Cross, and "This is It" and "Heart to Heart" by Kenny Loggins. The Kenny Loggins/Michael McDonald songs are just soulful eargasms all by themselves. Great review, and nobody chair dances better than our little girl Scribe.

The great Louis Johnson on bass. Played on Michael Jackson's Off the Wall & Thriller albums. The bass-line here has been sampled by many rap artists. Jeff Porcaro- on drum & Steve Lukather- guitar, from Toto. And a note to Greg Phillinganes on keys & clavinet. Classic song. How could it fail with those guys adding their juice to it.

@@choice12ozborne Yes. He was in the Doobie Brothers. It has been debated over the years whether or not he was a contributing factor in their success or the reason for their eventual failure. Many thought his addition robbed them of the sound and energy that earned them their audience. Others liked the change that earned them a Grammy for their period recordings like the album, MINUTE BY MINUTE.

I've always wondered. When an artist, such as yourself, hears all this music. From all these genres. Do you notice that it changes how you write, how you say the words, or music selection? Does Rage Against the Machine or Slipknot slip into your mind when writing? Do you hear a song like this and think of a way to incorporate elements of his vocal delivery or the funky vibe into a song? Do you feel this makes you a better artist because you're getting exposed to different styles?
