That’s not the real video, it was one of the few times she capitulated to the pressures of a controversial video and replaced it with the boring flag version. The original is SOOO much better!

This is not the actual video. She did something she almost never does and compromised because the actual video had a lot of semi-graphic depictions of war and America had just begun the invasion of Iraq and anybody that spoke out against the war in those first couple years were completely ostracized and canceled. Definitely check out the director's cut there's much more symbolism and you'll love it. Madonna's experimental years from the late 90s - early 2000s remain my favorite.

The REAL music video will tie up all the loose ends you have. Trust me. It will blow your minds. As usual it was banned then. Now it’s considered in my eyes unique and genius. She never shyed away from controversy even in her latter years. Her rapping was ridiculed by many but I think it fitted in perfectly. As like Erotica in the 90’s was underrated by a lot of critics this did the same for her in early 2000’s mainly for this song (political reasons), like she did after Erotica with Bedtime Stories and more with Ray Of Light, she bounced back and revived her status as Queen of pop with the album Confessions On The Dancefloor.

@@b.m.2763 Agreed. AL the song, would've been much better had she rapped with a more general, political or universal theme instead of talking about her soy latte's. That would've been a real subversive protest song on brand with her badass bitch image and might've charted much higher especially if it was banned. A missed opportunity for her which is rare for a career built on many firsts of triumphs.

I'm glad you reacted to this version simply because it allows you to focus on the music and lyrics and interpret the song for yourself...which I think you both did an excellent job of doing!👌 I'm not sure the other version would necessarily answer any questions...more likely it'd cause you to ask more questions and it would certainly open the conversation about the media's glamorization of war. Really glad you enjoyed this so much. It's a favorite of mine. At the time, she was married to British filmmaker Guy Ritchie and lived primarily in England which my friend and I called her American Wife era.😁

I think both of your interpretations are spot on (finally! 😜). She is simply questioning the idea of the “American Dream” and what it has become and does it truly lead to happiness. This is all in the context of post 9-11 and the US invasion of Iraq. As others have already said, you MUST watch the original uncensored video - it takes it to the next level. It’s not controversial for a sexual content but from a violence perspective. It depicts the American elite, and the media perspective of war contrasted with the actual reality. The video was not banned but rather Madonna was forced to voluntarily compromise her artistic vision and pull the video due to the backlash and threats to her family. It’s honestly super important piece of art to see.

The music video you reacted to is the "censored version". The original video was an anti-war statement. Making the video, she wanted to wake people up to the idea that war was around the corner, but by the time the video was finished and set up for release, war had already broken out, (The Iraq War 2003-2011), and she pulled the video back, for she thought it was in bad taste to release a graphic video, showcasing "war footage" at that time, and went with the flags video instead.

A lot of die hards were mad that she had the courtesy to pull it at such a sensitive time in politics. I can't surmise whether it was a good or bad decision, because we now have access to both. G'day it's Steven from Down Under again If memory serves me correctly this song was released circa 2003, as per usual Madonna was making a statement and provoked discussion about the horrors of war to some extent and how we've become desensitized, she was heavily criticised and really was attacked unfairly in my opinion. A great song, y'all may like to listen to the unedited version of this song, there's also a PG rated version of this music video too. God bless America All hail the Queen of Pop!

Oh my Madonna, please react to the actual video. This was rolled out as an alternative when by the time the release date was on, the US had already declared war against Iraq She was getting death threats on her children and she thought it would be tasteless to release the video in the midst of war. Madonna has amazing moments in music, many. And this has to be one of the best. This album received the love she deserved after two decades. It was the album that cut Madonnas hit streak since 1982. None of the singles became hits. And it was all because of the Conservative Party and their attacks on artists who spoke against the Iraq War. Radios boycotted airplays. Now, it’s a masterpiece. So is the original video. Please react. You two are amazing. Thanks for the reactions to the coolest queen of the universe

Some song recommendations for y'all: "Spanish Eyes" from Like A Prayer. You guys seem to gravitate towards ballads and with your religious background, this brilliant song would be right up your alley. "Thief of Hearts" from Erotica. In lieu of Madonna expressing her sexuality, why not explore her rage over betrayal? "More" from I'm Breathless. Where Madonna does riffs on classic American "musical" sounds and totally kills it. "Skin" from Ray of Light. A great example of the depth Madonna brings to dance music - both compositionally and lyrically. "What it Feels Like For a Girl," from Music. The album track, not the dance remix video (and, even though it's in Spanish, the utterly brilliant live performance from 2001's Drowned World Tour. "Lo Que Siente La Mujer") "Like it Or Not" from Confessions on a Dance Floor. Very much something of a mission statement song for Madonna. "Erotica" from the live Confessions Tour. It might be interesting to pair this with the title track from 1992's Erotica album and note her brilliance in switching the tone and meaning of a song depending on her artistic purpose. "Love Spent" from MDNA. Note how the production mimics the thoughts conveyed in the lyrics. "Falling Free" from MDNA. So much of this album is 'meh,' it's kind of amazing just how awesome a couple of the songs are, including this quiet, deeply sad number. "God Control" from Madame X. The music itself is 'Wanna Be Startin' Something' crazy, 'everything and the kitchen sink' over the top...and the video demonstrates why Madonna is the master of the medium. In all seriousness, I'm enjoying revisiting Madonna through your eyes. Thanks!

But, I'm also quite drawn into your curiosity and openness to discovering Madonna's art and wild legacy - art and legacy that frankly defined my American experience and that genuinely changed THE American experience.

We could receive this one as a sequel or a response to Material Girl Both are ironical

At this time with the original non-censored video and the lyrics she was definitively banned from the US media and radios..the album flopped in US ..As usual she was ahead of her time and taking risks for a major pop star...today every pop star are "meah"..no opinions, no politics...

Yes, as others are saying you must at least watch the original video for your own sakes even if you don't do a reaction vid. This sanitized version was what was eventually sent to music channels and media outlets after she made the decision to pull the original video. When the original video Idea was conceived and shot the idea of war in Iraq was in the air. But by the time the video was completed and ready to be sent out war the invasion of Iraq had occurred and although the message of the uncut video is anti war, some people thought it was un American. The long and short reason for pulling the video was that she didn't mind getting hate mail but when there were threats of violence and death directed at her children she for the first time in her career backed down and did not release her original video. It somehow leaked online a few months later. Personally I think it is one of her best pieces of work. ❤️❤️🥇🥇✌️✌️💪💪❌❌❌
