This came out 20 years ago. TW-EN-TY. The fact that this sounds fresh today is testament to Madonna's amazing genius.

Yep. Fresh as a daisy
That’s not the real video, it was one of the few times she capitulated to the pressures of a controversial video and replaced it with the boring flag version. The original is SOOO much better!
The oficial vídeo will blow your minds, its strong, raw and heavy,a really masterpiece
This is not the actual video. She did something she almost never does and compromised because the actual video had a lot of semi-graphic depictions of war and America had just begun the invasion of Iraq and anybody that spoke out against the war in those first couple years were completely ostracized and canceled. Definitely check out the director's cut there's much more symbolism and you'll love it. Madonna's experimental years from the late 90s - early 2000s remain my favorite.

Love it from begining till the very end. Agree.👍🏻❤️
The REAL music video will tie up all the loose ends you have. Trust me. It will blow your minds. As usual it was banned then. Now it’s considered in my eyes unique and genius. She never shyed away from controversy even in her latter years. Her rapping was ridiculed by many but I think it fitted in perfectly. As like Erotica in the 90’s was underrated by a lot of critics this did the same for her in early 2000’s mainly for this song (political reasons), like she did after Erotica with Bedtime Stories and more with Ray Of Light, she bounced back and revived her status as Queen of pop with the album Confessions On The Dancefloor.
These kids sometimes surprise me, in a good way. Who knew Madonna's most reviled single ever released yet these 2 gets it. Thank you 🥰

not even a madonna fan, but AL is a great album and certainly her best, despite what some ridiculous critics said at the time of its release.
@carlheese

@@b.m.2763 Agreed. AL the song, would've been much better had she rapped with a more general, political or universal theme instead of talking about her soy latte's. That would've been a real subversive protest song on brand with her badass bitch image and might've charted much higher especially if it was banned. A missed opportunity for her which is rare for a career built on many firsts of triumphs.

It’s the album (more than the single) I think that was reviled.. but I agree with you. This is not a fave of mine. But always interesting watching T and Marissa react.
It sure why so many fans hate this song but I absolutely love it! And yes you need to react to the uncensored video.
I love the experimental Madonna!! And I still think this is a great song and album. The uncensored video is mind-blowing!
This is one of her BEST. You need to react to the right video one more time. Please also check out 'Die Another Day' and 'American Pie'. I'm sure you will like it.
Very underrated song and still sounds fresh today. Great reaction as always guys and so pleased you liked this song x
This song is very amazing but extremely underrated !
PLEASE react to the real video. The director’s cut especially. Madonna’s career was almost killed by this haha
WOW Can't believe ya'll approved of it, please check out the original director's cut version that she pulled before release
Both of your interpretations are spot on. That’s why you should watch the uncensored version for a complete depiction of the song
I'm glad you reacted to this version simply because it allows you to focus on the music and lyrics and interpret the song for yourself...which I think you both did an excellent job of doing!👌 I'm not sure the other version would necessarily answer any questions...more likely it'd cause you to ask more questions and it would certainly open the conversation about the media's glamorization of war. Really glad you enjoyed this so much. It's a favorite of mine. At the time, she was married to British filmmaker Guy Ritchie and lived primarily in England which my friend and I called her American Wife era.😁
i am so glad yall loved it! its really a great track. as others have said, the 'real' video is intense, and i would for sure say see it, but im glad you listened to this first so that you arent too distracted. the video is as intense as your viewers are saying. definitely almost killed her career (though she had made it through a lot) but ended up making her stronger. the next album after was a revival of her career. top tier.
Great song, unbeliveable album and one of the best videos of her carrer (the other vídeo not this),but i loved how both you connected with song and understood the real meaning of it
This reaction was such a pleasant surprise. Loved Marissa's facial expression throughout the song. Total fascination. ;) As far as interpretation goes I think this time for a change Marissa is more off and Tyler's more on the money. Love that too. Great video guys.
please see the uncensored video, it delivers the message much better thanks very much!
Please react to the "American Life Director's Cut/Uncensored version".
Also, the song is American Life - but she sings, “American lieeeeeeee”

She sings both. But yes…
You guys need to watch the uncensored version of this video to see how she really drove the message of the song home in a spectacular way.
I have seen people, even myself, mentioning American life Uncensored version or Director's cut but it seemed like you guys didn't pay enough attention. 😂
Try the original video, this tamed version is nothing compared to the original she was forced to withdraw 😉 Hugs to you both 🤗
This is the alternate video version, There's the first one which you guys need to watch the uncersored version! 😍
AMAZING REACTION! You are so clever and nice. It's always a great pleasure to watch you reacting to Madonna's art. Thank you so much!
If you liked this one you should review "Nobody Knows Me" from the same album, same producers, same type of sound and she also raps in it, too! I love this album. It was a bit overlooked, but I thought it was amazing electronica.
I think both of your interpretations are spot on (finally! 😜). She is simply questioning the idea of the “American Dream” and what it has become and does it truly lead to happiness. This is all in the context of post 9-11 and the US invasion of Iraq. As others have already said, you MUST watch the original uncensored video - it takes it to the next level. It’s not controversial for a sexual content but from a violence perspective. It depicts the American elite, and the media perspective of war contrasted with the actual reality. The video was not banned but rather Madonna was forced to voluntarily compromise her artistic vision and pull the video due to the backlash and threats to her family. It’s honestly super important piece of art to see.
I think it is good that you first saw this video, because you can listen better to the song, and it is a good song and lyrically very strong, without distractions. But now you have the see the original video too, it was very controversial at that time..
A song from decades ago is so incredibly relevant today. More Madonna genius on display.
More than amazing 👏
This version of Madonna song was based on the Iraqi war 2003
Just watched AGAIN! Should tell you everything. Lotsa love to u guys👍👍💙💙zane
U need to see the undercut American life video
Big mistake not reacting to the uncensored video, it's appreciated anyway, we love Madonna 🖤🖤
One of her best songs, and probably her most underrated one
You have to watch the pulled/original video. It's one of her best. Not my fave M song.. but one of her best videos.
The "American Life" is FIRE! It got overshadowed by the American Life video, the original cut. Please watch it!
One of her best work.
This was one of her best, even in the most simplest ways of doing a video her greatness is always marvelous, so did the album itself is far ahead from the packs of delusional great pretenders. She's the most well verse and competent artist ever!!!
Marissa your little glances at the camera at the start were funny. You looked happy and stunned at the same time.
*Glad u love this song indeed its so underrated in the USA but actually American Life song did quite well in some Europe and Asia country*
marissa sat there like 👁️👄👁️
I LOVE THIS REACTION!!!! the song is one I’ve ALWAYS loved and you two seemed to feel the same. Really like when that happens 👍👍😘😘💙💙zane
Glad to see you young folks enjoying this song American life great great album
I remember the first time I heard this on the radio back in 2003 it gave me chills just 3 seconds into the song. It’s so underrated and by the way this was the clean version when it comes to both the song and video. I think the last phrase sums it all “nothing is what it seems”!
The music video you reacted to is the "censored version". The original video was an anti-war statement. Making the video, she wanted to wake people up to the idea that war was around the corner, but by the time the video was finished and set up for release, war had already broken out, (The Iraq War 2003-2011), and she pulled the video back, for she thought it was in bad taste to release a graphic video, showcasing "war footage" at that time, and went with the flags video instead.

True, I experienced the changes from the original version to this version.
I am happy you love this. American Life, both single and album, are criminally underrated.
this is the 2 nd video she became human humbled and took the original video ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Such a bizarre experience I just had listening to the song while watching this reaction video, I enjoyed it more than I have in a very long time while seeing the shocked faces of where the song twists and turns. Almost like I was experiencing it for the first time or at least differently thru u, and it felt fresh again. Whatever it may be I'm about to listen again.
Their reactions are priceless...
The lyrics of this song are amazing.
So nice to watch you hear this song. It’s been one of my favs since the day it was released but because of the other video and the war, Madonna got slated for this and the album. The rap I love it but Madonna was torn to peace’s over. So glad you love it!
The song is amazing and you both are amazing 👏 💗 ❤️
The original uncensored video is a must see!
This song and album are totally underrated. Check out Love Profusion. Beautiful song.
Please react to the "Director's Cut" version, which caused great controversy forcing Madonna to ban it. Today, 20 years later, she made it available on her official channel.
Delightful reaction vid! I anticipated you guys disliking it as most people did upon it's release. A lot of die hards were mad that she had the courtesy to pull it at such a sensitive time in politics. I can't surmise whether it was a good or bad decision, because we now have access to both. Hopefully you two can react to the original intended video and compare/contrast your impressions. Anyway, cheers and thank you for always making my day brighter with your Madonna videos. Keep up the great work, please! ❤️
oh you guys need to watch the uncensored video, it's hardcore and not in a sexual way. Very strong message.
one of her best eras ever ....
Glad both of you liked the song. Its a great one. It wasn't well received back then, though. Critics were too hard on her, but now American Life it's getting the recognition it deserves. Madonna is a genius.
You have to do the unedited version of the video to get what she’s talking about 😊
The original "uncensored" version of the music video to this song really puts things into perspective, and everything you said based on this highly tamed version of the music video was spot on, and should you ever react to the full (banned) version, you could easily expand on the wonderful analyses you gave. 👑💙🇺🇸
G'day it's Steven from Down Under again If memory serves me correctly this song was released circa 2003, as per usual Madonna was making a statement and provoked discussion about the horrors of war to some extent and how we've become desensitized, she was heavily criticised and really was attacked unfairly in my opinion. A great song, y'all may like to listen to the unedited version of this song, there's also a PG rated version of this music video too. God bless America All hail the Queen of Pop!
Hi guys. Love your channel. I agree with remarks below. Consider watching the uncensored video. It truly defines what Madonna is saying in the song.
Oh my Madonna, please react to the actual video. This was rolled out as an alternative when by the time the release date was on, the US had already declared war against Iraq She was getting death threats on her children and she thought it would be tasteless to release the video in the midst of war. Madonna has amazing moments in music, many. And this has to be one of the best. This album received the love she deserved after two decades. It was the album that cut Madonnas hit streak since 1982. None of the singles became hits. And it was all because of the Conservative Party and their attacks on artists who spoke against the Iraq War. Radios boycotted airplays. Now, it’s a masterpiece. So is the original video. Please react. You two are amazing. Thanks for the reactions to the coolest queen of the universe
Madonna Rap part was better than most Rappers today No mumbled rap on this one .
Excellent song!
This is the re-shot edit. Please react to the uncut video. Actually makes you realise that censorship was a big thing 20 odd plus years ago once you see Madonna’s vision. Love your Madonna reaction videos btw, keep up the good work, and please review the tours starting with The Virgin Tour. Cheers from the UK
Some song recommendations for y'all: "Spanish Eyes" from Like A Prayer. You guys seem to gravitate towards ballads and with your religious background, this brilliant song would be right up your alley. "Thief of Hearts" from Erotica. In lieu of Madonna expressing her sexuality, why not explore her rage over betrayal? "More" from I'm Breathless. Where Madonna does riffs on classic American "musical" sounds and totally kills it. "Skin" from Ray of Light. A great example of the depth Madonna brings to dance music - both compositionally and lyrically. "What it Feels Like For a Girl," from Music. The album track, not the dance remix video (and, even though it's in Spanish, the utterly brilliant live performance from 2001's Drowned World Tour. "Lo Que Siente La Mujer") "Like it Or Not" from Confessions on a Dance Floor. Very much something of a mission statement song for Madonna. "Erotica" from the live Confessions Tour. It might be interesting to pair this with the title track from 1992's Erotica album and note her brilliance in switching the tone and meaning of a song depending on her artistic purpose. "Love Spent" from MDNA. Note how the production mimics the thoughts conveyed in the lyrics. "Falling Free" from MDNA. So much of this album is 'meh,' it's kind of amazing just how awesome a couple of the songs are, including this quiet, deeply sad number. "God Control" from Madame X. The music itself is 'Wanna Be Startin' Something' crazy, 'everything and the kitchen sink' over the top...and the video demonstrates why Madonna is the master of the medium. In all seriousness, I'm enjoying revisiting Madonna through your eyes. Thanks!
Great Madonna
This is the censored version that Madonna was basically forced to make. Her original version had some imagery that certain factions found objectionable as we were still reacting to 9/11.
Interesting that you guys like this song that happened to be panned by most critics.
Aside what I said into my main comentary...yes, both of you are right: "THERE'S SOMETHING MORE TO IT" (WAR and USA back then) & "MADONNA personal experience with the AMERICAN LIFE / AMERICAN DREAM and overall happinnes"... and thats why AMERICAN LIFE IS the 1st song of the álbum and HOLLYWOOD the Second. Só please, react to AMERICAN LIFE UNCENSORED VERSION and later on HOLLYWOOD. The meaning of the subject is hooked up between them two
Please check out the uncensored version. You won't regret it.
I'm bizarrely fascinated by your Madonna reaction videos as it feels almost like you've emerged from a Kimmy Schmidt bunker of socio-religious isolation that feels anachronistic to my American experience. But, I'm also quite drawn into your curiosity and openness to discovering Madonna's art and wild legacy - art and legacy that frankly defined my American experience and that genuinely changed THE American experience.
The original video is probably one of her best. Unfortunately, it showed the negative aspects of American foreign policy at a time no one was willing to criticize it.
There are two music videos for this song. The original music video is about anti-war and anti-fashion. It caused controversy and she feared that she would be seen as unpatriotic. Madonna cancelled the release of the original music video and released an alternative version which you have seen.
The flag about PERU red and white niceee colll. The best is here in the video madonna ...american life,... this do top 10 for me
Guys you HAVE to react to the other video version!!! PLEASE
Nooooo! This is the censored version! Please react to the original banned video! The most UNDERRATED video ever. She was threatened by all USA because of this and banned from the radios until 2006
You should do the uncensored version!
I like at the start of the song the face of Marissa 🤣
You need to watch the official video for this song.
Guys, that’s the censored version. You should definitely react to the uncensored one cause it’s fire!
This is not the original video …the real video is amazing ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I agree with everyone else. React to the original video...the message is alot more clear then. Keep reacting to the QUEEN she is so AMAZING!!!
*Great review Kids so please react to its original uncensored videos featuring the military fashion runway cos its more impactful*
Oh, you muuust react to the real video of this song, which is the uncensored version. It's all about the 2003 war and you'll get the real message watching this version.
I love that you watched this version of the video because now you only react to the musical and lyrical content only. You got the message loud and clear. The original video, which I love, was so extreme and political, and offended so many Americans, given the time of release. I really think it overshadowed this whole album. Without the American Life video I think the album would be acclaimed as one of her best.
This is the Censored version.
Hey! You should have reaction for the first and full version
We could receive this one as a sequel or a response to Material Girl Both are ironical
At this time with the original non-censored video and the lyrics she was definitively banned from the US media and radios..the album flopped in US ..As usual she was ahead of her time and taking risks for a major pop star...today every pop star are "meah"..no opinions, no politics...
Hey guys ,plse react to the uncensored version, she had to do this video because the original video got banned from MTV,you'll understand why when u see the video, but it's one of her best videos ever ...🌹❣️🎈
Definitely watch the uncensored version. It almost ended her career.
I like the song very experimental
Yes, as others are saying you must at least watch the original video for your own sakes even if you don't do a reaction vid. This sanitized version was what was eventually sent to music channels and media outlets after she made the decision to pull the original video. When the original video Idea was conceived and shot the idea of war in Iraq was in the air. But by the time the video was completed and ready to be sent out war the invasion of Iraq had occurred and although the message of the uncut video is anti war, some people thought it was un American. The long and short reason for pulling the video was that she didn't mind getting hate mail but when there were threats of violence and death directed at her children she for the first time in her career backed down and did not release her original video. It somehow leaked online a few months later. Personally I think it is one of her best pieces of work. ❤️❤️🥇🥇✌️✌️💪💪❌❌❌
