The context of this song -- as you may have guessed -- is that Pagliacci has just learned that his wife Colombina has left him for another, but in spite of his pain he must put on his costume and his make-up and make the audience laugh, because the "show must go on". Beautifully and soulfully sung by the maestro, Pavarotti. Thank you for sharing your reaction.

Fabulosa interpretación. Me ha dejado conmovido, bravo Sr. Pavarotti

You don't even have to know what he's saying to feel his emotion. The strength in his voice and his control gives him control few can achieve these days, but his understanding of when to let his voice waver only adds to the effect of him singing of his heartache.

The story is about a carnival clown who has just learned that his wife, Columbina, has been unfaithful to him with another man. Before he even has time to process his emotions, he has to go onstage and do his show. He has to make people laugh even though his heart is breaking. Such a sad, sad story. I prefer Mario Lanza's version to this one, but Pavarotti knows how to tug your heartstrings.
