Evanescence helps me a lot since I was 13, 15 years old, because the lyrics are so good, and they mean a lot to me. I strongly suggest you to do a deep dive in their songs, like "Hello", "Even In Death" "Lacrymosa" (the Synthesis version), "Tourniquet" and also "Speak To Me", from Amy's solo carrer. She's an amazing human being and a very gifted songwriter. Great reaction!

Oh god yeah, now I LOVE this stuff. The way the guitar part and piano part sort of "dance" around each other in the verses, the vocal part on top of that, the lyrics. So, so artful. I remember what Amy said this song was about in an interview, which makes me really relate to the song, but to be honest, I want to leave this song open to interpretation for the viewers here. God....Amy Lee is such a goddess.

I listened to this a lot as a teenager. the line I love the most is "I wanna stay in love with my sorrow, but God I wanna let it go". I was really emotionally numb back then, and this past year kind of brought it back. But I'm still here, and I'll stay. (Which, coincidentally, is the name of a Finnish song I love, called "Mä Jään", or "I'll stay". It's really upbeat, but the lyrics are about facing the person in the mirror and staying for yourself and those you love.)

Evanescence is a very special band to me, and has represented many moments in my life, from the good…to the bad. I’ve never been actively depressed but I’m half sure this band is the reason why I never fell down the drain like many others around me did. She calms me down, lifts me up. One of my favorites is from the same album as Lithium, Good Enough. I sing this to 2 girls that are just like little sisters to me so frequently, especially with one of them, because they both made me feel like I was good enough. Take Cover, from the newest album, describes a toxic parasite that all 3 of us escaped from, and helped me feel so much better about it. Call Me When You’re Sober? Another one that I used to help get over the anger of my guy friend of 6+ years started treating me like shit and left the first time around, My Immortal was used if I was sad. Whisper? The reason I got into Latin, and got me a beautiful community that I loved for years in high school. Missing? Yeah, I’ve felt that too when I felt like I wasn’t being appreciated…and it helped. Better Without You? Also related to that guy friend, and it’s my “fuck you!” to him as it’s Amy’s middle finger to Wind Up Records. Even something like Everybody’s Fool…I found the song of the embodiment of hating Justin Bieber for years, which made me happy as hell. Broken Pieces Shine and Use My Voice are anthems showing that we don’t have to pretend to be perfect to show our best self, and we do not have to stand being treated like garbage and we can fight for ourselves. And so much goddamn more… I won’t go on, but I’ll just say there’s been people to shit on me for loving this band and rock in general, it’s made me very sensitive about it despite me getting better and I pray I never have it happen again, at least not with the people who understand why I love them and will listen to the stuff themselves as well. As well to those out there battling depression, I have so much sympathy for you and hope that you can keep gathering the strength to keep fighting. It nearly took some very close people to me and I will never dismiss anyone struggling because of it, and I will always listen to someone if that is what you need.

I love the metaphor of the water at the end being the medication Lithium, as she goes deeper into the water (lithium) right before it takes over you see her lose her emotion & then it being trapped under the medication (water)

So i recommend listening to full albums at a time because the way they compose this emotional journey with the order of their music is beautiful. Their recent album bitter truth has such beautiful songs that explore loss and grieving and coming out of that without letting go or pretending to be ok. She empowers you by letting you know it’s ok to not be fine, to be scared.. it’s brave to walk forward, to run to fly despite being a wreck inside.. that is the epitome of courage and what I feel she represents through her music. Every concert I go to I just shed these quiet tears because of how beautiful and powerful her presence is when she sings.

  • @gedvalente9092

Great interpretation of the song. I like the fact that you see Lithiam as any type of debilitating dependence that numbs the personality and ultimately robs one of the ability to honesty express oneself emotionally.

Great video and reaction. I would like to make a comment though Amy has stated she has never been on the drug lithium. She just uses it as a metaphor for the feelings of numbness. Since lithium is such a strong mind altering drug it was the perfect one to select for the metaphor. All in all she described the song about being in love with the darkness and the low because it is familiar and she uses it as a creative force but it can also be detrimental to your health. It’s about the battle between those two sides happiness versus familiarity and creativity. She questions can she be the same if she lets it go? As with all of her writing they are so many things that play into the song and it’s written in a way that can be taken in many many ways. She also references broken relationships in this song. It never occurred to me that you are 100% correct she dips or Tosan and then the next thing you know she’s drowning. It’s such a fascinating moment that I didn’t appreciate until you pointed it out

"Tourniquet" is s song that I used to think about when I thought about attempting to commit suicide and failing. Another good one that thumps. About emotional numbness: I know this personally. For years, after my grandmother died (I was in the car with her and my grandpa, but I was unable to save her), I couldn't feel anything. And I mean nothing. It wasn't until I was finally able to accept death as an "inevitable end," as a Stoic, that I was able to let go and feel again. Acceptance, in my mind, is so important, because while nothing technically changes, the question becomes: Will you let your past control your present, and control your future? For me, while I still struggle with that from time to time, I try not to dwell on the past, because I would rather experience what life has in store for me, than simply wait around to die.

I have never gotten more compliments in public than since that moment- no matter what I was wearing beyond a smile and happiness inside I was SEEN and made others happy and want to engage. It took me 50 years to learn a lesson that gave me contentment and satisfaction and confidence in myself that has not wavered since. 💛✅

Amy Lee's voice is angelic. Amanda you mentioned taking meds to make yourself tolerable to other people. I take meds to make others tolerable to me. I generally hate people as a whole and avoid them as much as possible. The flip side of that for me is I like to help people in need. I think that's because I would want that if I was in need. I encourage the few people I like to commit random acts of kindness, it helps heal two souls at once.

Wow, I used to listen to this song on repeat as a kid. Now, after spending years working towards finding the right amount of meds to alleviate my symptoms without dulling my personality, this song hits like I never could have imagined. I have to take medication, especially my anxiety relief and antidepressants, but the mood stabilizers and antipsychotics just turned me into a blank slate. It was like the world flipped to black and white. It was rough, tbh, cause I was on those, fiddling with the dosages for almost 3 years. I got off all the ones that made me feel bad at the start of this year and I've been doing so much better. But the themes of this song are accurate and pervasive. I'm going to be listening to this album again, I think I can get more out of it now than I did as a kid.

I remember hearing "Going Under" on the radio and being blown away. I also immediately went out and got that CD. Such tumultuous life she's had. And BTW, found you due to reaction to Ren's "Hi Ren". Very powerful piece of aural and visual artistry. And wow, to come out like that and rip away the mask. But, if I am understanding your timeline, you've had a lot of life stressors in the last 2 years or so. So have I. Just had our 1st Thanksgiving and Christmas without my Dad. And just a few days was the 1 year mark of his passing. Our family has had rough this past 18 months as my older brother died in mid-Nov, before my Dad passed, his sister passed, two of my aunts on my Mom's side also died. And my Mom continues deteriorate due to her Alzheimer's. And I have been suffering from a painful, non-treatable condition for past 6 yrs on top of that. And doesn't even barely cover it all. Also, I might suggest listening to some Eels, Cannon (especially Fire for You), Kasiban and Manic Bloom. Thanks for taking the time for reading this post. Cheers.

@Amanda, so much of Evanescence's music deals with the mental health journey! Their music and especially Amy's delivery was a big part of my dealing with my aforementioned "crash & burn" in the early 2000's. (Posted on a different vid of yours). Other fantastic songs are: Broken (Seether actually, but duet W/Amy) Call Me When You're Sober Imaginary Tourniquet Going Under Hello (deals with loss) Good Enough ....there are just so many! You can pretty much jump in anywhere, no order needed. But based on your channel, you really owe it to yourself if nobody else to check them all out! Great Reaction. Amy's siinging just draws you in and the lyrics are so deep. I discovered Evanesence almost a year ago. Ironically I first heard this song around the time I had a bad experience with Cymbalta. I Love what you said about the meds. I have never been on Lithium but I've been on alot of other meds that didn't help. They either did nothing or had bad side effects. I also know people who took those same meds and it helped and made their life better. So you've done reactions to Metallica, Slayer, Halestorm and Evanesence. You got to react to Wallflower by Jinjer. Please. Eventhough the video is excellent, I'd recommend the lyrics version. Go in blind. Keep fighting the good fight. Thank you for all that you do. .

Evanescence was the first metal band I started listening to. Metal music has definitely helped me out a lot back in the rough teenage years when everything was upside down, and it still does. it's like it just heals your rage and frustration on things to some degree when having a bad day. For about a decade now, Eluveitie has been my favorite band out of all I've heard so far. They play Folk Metal, which makes me think of how life was some hundreds of years back, where a sword was your weapon instead of a simple and easy gun. If I have a tough day and wanting to give up, thinking of how hard they fought back then somehow gives me strength and willpower to fight my microscope problems today compared to what they had to fight back then. If you wanna make a reaction video to them, I personally would first suggest Alesia. Other favourite ones I would suggest are: A Rose For Epona, Call Of The Mountains, or Inis Mona. Ty for making the reaction videos! :)

Here's another singer that can't be missed. Her name is Angelina Jordan (16). All of her 130 covers and three originals began with the performance of a barefoot 7 year old prodigy who auditioned for the 2014 Norway's Got Talent season, and won. This performance began her worldwide exposure, with her singing "Fly Me to the Moon" on The View in the US at age 8, and also sang for the Obama's. Her parents insisted that Angelina should enjoy her childhood, and have turned down 90% of the requests. Between her NGT performance and her audition on America's Got Talent the Champions at age 13, Angelina had helped raise millions of dollars and over 21 million euros for disadvantaged children. Although she's made over 130 covers and 3 originals, the two I recommend starting off with are as follows. - First, watch her black and white studio performance of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' 1956 classic "I Put a Spell on You". Did I mention that this child started singing at 1 1/2 years old, and grew up with jazz and the blues? A couple weeks past her 9th birthday, she performed her own arrangement, directed the band, and exhibited vocal abilities that voice coaches can't account for. - Second, view her AGTC audition with Queen's 1975 hit "Bohemian Rhapsody". Angelina, 13, received a golden buzzer for her performance and a congratulatory tweet from Queen. Here are the links: "I PUT A SPELL ON YOU" - kzread.info/dash/bejne/oKt6ztF8gLvgc9Y.html AGTC - "BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY" (includes golden buzzer) - kzread.info/dash/bejne/pndlyqZwm8K9hNo.html (If you like these, suggestions will follow on the best performances to watch) * You many notice that Angelina Jordan always performs barefooted, whether in front of a live audience or during a studio recording. This has resulted in her being given the title of "the Barefoot Princess" or "the Barfoot Princess of Jazz". The story is that when living in the Middle East, at age 6, she came across an orphaned girl earning money by weighing people in the street with a bathroom scale. She noticed how cold it was and that the 6-7 year old girl was not only barefoot, but had scars on her feet. So 6 year old Angelina took off her own shoes, shoes that she loved, and gave them to the girl. Angelina decided she wouldn't wear shoes in her performances to remind her of all the children in the world who had no parents, proper clothes, or shoes. Hence, you will hear her called the "Barefoot Princess", or the "Barefoot Princess of Jazz". Of the encounter, little 6 year old Angelina wrote in her diary: “The world is very strange. Right then and there I felt as if a door in my heart opened up, and it was filled with lots of lights. It was as if there was, from Earth to Heaven, a staircase. I climbed the stairs. To be able to do something for another human - it was such a big thing…hard to describe really.” In 2015, at 9 years of age, Angelina wrote a book about the encounter, making her the youngest published author in Norway. The book and the attire Angelina wore for her AGTC audition were designed by her grandmother who was a child prodigy in art.

When it comes to people not caring about me in the past it’s actually kinda funny to me. In the past the people around me were negative and always trying to put me down. But once I started to get out the mess i was in, i got a good job as carpenter that i am now pretty Successful in, and especially once I started working towards being an athlete. The negative people are suddenly jealous and acting very friendly. You know, once you start getting better, good people who do care and support you will come into your life. And even when it doesn’t feel like there’s anyone who cares now, there’s always people not directly in your life who care… like everyone here.

Hello, started watching your reaction viideos and first want to say kudos to you for finding an outlet for your feelings and hope you continue to stay as strong as you've been. A song I would recommend is Full of Grace by Sarah McCloughin (I think that's how you spell it). First heard it as a teenager and loved it.

This song like all Amy Lee songs is amazing the song reminds you how scary depression and medication really is a lot of people think it's so easy to go on medication and in a lot of cases it makes them feel better than the one they thinks needs it

Hi Amanda. Hope you're well. Great song to react to. You should check out Hello by Evanescence. She wrote it about her sister that died at a really early age. I can't remember off the top of my head how old she was. She said that this song is how she felt when she found out. She was at school when she found out. She was old enough to know what death was. It's an lyrically heavy song but a very beautiful one. It shows off her vocal skill as well I think.

I am someone who was diagnosed with bipolar II NOS later in life, after other erroneous pronouncements. I’ve never taken lithium myself but have known some people who have. If I can recall correctly they reported experiencing negative effects due to it. As for me I’ve also been dealt bad blows by meds that were supposed to be helping, but at the same time they also harmed. Many years later I seem to have sorted all of that out, though certain effects will be with me for my entire life. Besides the brooding melancholy of this song, an emotional veneer plus depths, I also like the lyric “Always find my place among the ashes.” It’s true, that sad songs say so much.

This is my favorite Ev song, but it contains my least fave lyric: "Anything is better than to be alone." So I was glad to see your reaction to it. If you're interested in a song about teenage suicide, try "The Pass," by Rush.

Even before taking medication, I can be emotionally numb. What happened in my past caused me to have memory loss and feel numb. I feel like in high school, I hid behind a smile. I remember telling my mother what happened to me. I was 12 years old and my mother was hugging me and bawling her eyes out and I just stood there, with no emotion. I never cried. Then when I was 15 and was put in an ambulance after an attempt, I did not cry but as they wheeled me into the car, I saw my mother coming out of her car, crying her eyes out as she saw me put in the ambulance. The medication has helped me with my temper but not with my numbness. I don't even know if it made it worse or better.

Tourniquet by Evanescence IS a very dark song but it would be interesting to hear your take on it Amanda. The main theme of the song is about suicide so I would caution younger listeners about its content.

The song is from Fallen. Tourniquet from the same album in a similar vein. More recent albums are the self titled 2014 album. The live concert with symphony called Synthesis (2018) and The Bitter Pill released a year ago, recorded in isolation on a farm after writing separately. Now if that is not a metaphor for dealing with depression alone being treated by not being alone any longer but with friends to support you and what you can achieve together, well then I don't know what is.

I did some research, and Amy said she'd never taken lithium, and that it was just used in a metaphorical sense, but I started lithium for Bipolar when I was 12 and at age 35 I still take it, there's pros and cons and the ends justify the means in my situation, but the chorus is 100% how it feels, that's literally what it's like

Honestly I've been kind of a shell of a human being for most of my life up until this year. I had entered a treatment program for ARFID and was only there for a few weeks but working with a trauma therapist and a nutritionist, I was able to put a lot of very heavy pieces of my life together. I had been through therapy before but I had so many unhealthy coping mechanisms to deal with everything that I had buried that I wasn't making a lot of progress. I take zoloft for depression and before I started that program, there were numerous occasions where I questioned whether my medicine had stopped working. I thought my surface level happiness was my true happiness but it only went as deep as there was room for it. My medication does wonders with the clinical side of things (as far as I know; I'm too scared to stop taking it and find out), but I had been emotionally invalidated for so long and so often that I thought my medication was the issue when in reality I was finally feeling my entire life's worth of despair and I didn't know how to handle it all.

Evanescence deals with a lot with mental health, loss, healing, grief (especially Far from Heaven when she lost her brother due to complications to epilepsy on her newest album) Another artist that should be given a hear is breaking Benjamin “dear agony”, “dance with the devil” The offspring “gone away” NOT FFDP version cause that has a slightly different meaning (loss of battle buddies while on deployment) Disturbed “inside the fire”
