Quote the social commentator, especially active in highlighting the death of the family farm. Formed Farm Aid with Willie Nelson an Neil Young. Blood on the scarecrow is about the death of family farms. Great anthems, Little Pink Houses, Small Town, and Jack and Diane.

He released Jack and Diane when I was a little kid and I was obsessed but had no idea at all what it was about. He has some great songs and is a huge supporter or farm families.

From his 1987 album, The Lonesome Jubilee. Rolling Stone magazine album review: “To state his theme this album: ‘For what does a man get for all his hard work?’ Mellencamp prints a passage from Ecclesiastes on the record jacket, “Generations come and go, but it makes no difference. The sun rises and sets and hurries around to rise again. The wind blows south & north, here & there, twisting back & forth, getting nowhere. The rivers run into the sea, but the sea is never full, and the water returns again to the rivers and flows again to the sea . . everything is unutterably weary and tiresome. No matter how much we see, we are never satisfied; no matter how much we hear, we are not content. So I saw that there is nothing better for men than that they should be happy in their work, for that is what they are here for, and no one can bring them back to life to enjoy what will be in the future, so let them enjoy it now.” Also, the line, “We keep no check on our appetite”…. is from John’s favorite movie, Hud.

I thought Mellencamp was from Southern Indiana, which, unless you have ever been there you might not imagine just how incredibly SOUTHERN it is in the far south of Indiana. I have done a great deal of genealogy there (and all over the Eastern United States), but it just feels like Kentucky to me. In some ways, it feels MORE rural Kentucky than Indiana. To me, the song was always about how one needs to take care with ones dreams- if a guy dreams of a great love, but only chases shallow relationships he will never find a love worthy of his heart. The lady in the beginning had dreams, but they just went to ash on her... Some folks spend the rest of their lives searching through the ashes of their dreams. I've had cause to think about the nature of dreams and how it's true- the only limits some folks have are related to the size of their imagination. Other folks just seem fated to fail. Some of that is a fallacy that's been sold to us that "you can do anything you set your mind to do". Not all of us, folks. Not all of us. Get pregnant in your teens, grow up in a tiny town where the entire town tells you you're parents were trash and that's all you'll ever be ... no kidding- I dated a man who was told by his TEACHERS in elementary school that he was just a (insert family name) and that was all he was ever going to be. Absolutely, some folks will respond with "watch me!", but other people get going and then run into disappointment and say to themselves, "I guess they were right, I'm never going to be anything". Folks, some of the most INCREDIBLE people I've ever known in my life just found what made their souls sing and they did that - and I'd put their success up against anyone's. Love what you do and regardless of what resemblance the end product bears to what you initially dreamed of, you will have been more successful in many of the ways that truly matter than most millionaires can ever dream of. I mean, if you have people in your life you truly love and care about who feel the same way about you, you have won half the battle of life.
