    cool story, bro: radiohead were tracking the album the bends, and fake plastic trees was not happening at ALL. then they went and saw jeff buckley play, in london. thom yorke returned to the studio and did a take with just his acoustic and vocals, then broke down in tears. the band did overdubs to that take. that amazing falsetto he goes to in the verses wouldn't have happened without jeff buckley.

    After doing so many Radiohead reactions, you were bound to reach the Jeff Buckley rabbit hole at some point. One of favorite artists of all time. A couple of recommendations for mind bending and emotional vocals - “Mojo Pin” live from Glastonbury; “Lover You Should Have Come Over” studio version or lyric video. There’s so many more, but sadly not as much as there should be.

    Saw Jeff in Austin in an instore record shop in 1994, never heard of him before but we were walking on Lamar it was by UT. A commotion was going on a little with some beautiful college and high school girls. His band was set up and we walked in to a lot of screaming, shortly he strapped on his guitar. I had never seen anyone sing like him before and I went to many a concerts and saw many a singer before him. It’s one of those things you never forget. It physically changes your brain, it was like a miracle. Only one other person did that in my life, SRV in 1984 in Dallas. Long live Jeff in our hearts!

    Jeff Buckley was one of a kind. A truly extraordinary musician and vocalist. I don't think it's going too far to say he was unique. "Was", unfortunately, since he died so very, very young. Well worth seeking out the videos of his live performances, which show just how absolutely electric he was as a performer. Many viewers I am sure will recommend that you check out his version of Leonard Cohen's "Halleluiah". By all means, yes. But I would recommend "Eternal Life", which shows just how fierce he also could be! Just an amazing, amazing musician.

  • @MrDecksels

    @MrDecksels

    Even though they only met once, I do find it interesting the way Jeff Buckley's music connects to that of his father, Tim Buckley. You can really tell they were related, not just by the sound of their voices. Jeff initially didn't even know Halleluiah was by Leonard Cohen. His version was inspired by John Cale. If you can, try and find the deluxe edition of Grace. The bonus content contains a studio version of Eternal Life where it's played the way he did life, which is even more feral than the one that ended on the actual album.

    Something that I've enjoyed about your reaction here is something that as a composer I'm ALWAYS banging on about, which is that trusting your ear is paramount, and when we talk about scales and modes these are descriptive terms, ways of talking about the sounds that we're hearing. The way I learned music I had a really good idea and I knew how to find the sounds I wanted. I go back to my early pieces and I hear modes, chromaticism, secondary dominants, complex and colourful chords and all kinds of concepts that can be described by music theory, but I wasn't thinking about any of that stuff at the time, I was just looking for sounds that did the things I wanted, simple as that. And a lot of music KZread get this kind of backwards, they say things like you have to have a grounding in this theory before you can truly know what you're doing, and it's just not true - it's way more important to build trust with your ear, develop a sort of working relationship with the sounds in your head. Yes, music theory can be useful for all sorts of reasons, and I use it for various things, but it's (almost) never my starting point for making something, and a very small part of my overall creative process. So in other words I really appreciate you talking about music theory in this context, as a way to describe the sounds we hear.

    He led a 90s rock band but was influenced heavily by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and has also connections to the NYC lower east side avant/experimental scene. He was apparently in a band with the drummer from Tool (before Tool). And his album Grace has covers of Leonard Cohen, a song done by people like Eartha Kitt and Nina Simone, and an English hymn from the 1500s (or possibly earlier). The guy was an incredible alien.

    It's a bit overblown and indulgent vocally for me - but, I've also kinda had all the enjoyment of this record destroyed by a couple decades of horrible covers of this + that shouldn't be a reflection on Buckley, but damn even the "good" covers have all seemed emotionally dishonest. I think I'd enjoy this record again with a more stripped back production + yeah, I've got all the ep's + seen the footage, but the're all a bit too glossy. I enjoy "Sketches" a lot more.
