I've seen them live three times. All three times Tim has literally shaken the building with his low notes. Completely unassisted beyond the volume provided by the sound system. Also, ten years in and I've just learned to accept that Adam (the beatboxer) swallowed an entire orchestra at some point in his life and just lets out random bits of impossible from time to time.

@@ditdiver123 i answered this somewhere else...it is Tuvan Throat Singing. Singing 2 distinct notes simultaneously. i had earlier stated i can sing a C# 1, but not without vocal fry. Singing bass like Tim without fry or vibrato...totally clean, imo is perhaps the rarest vocal ability, given that no male past puberty can sing true soprano, given that castrati has been illegal since the 18th century. i also cannot name a male singer who could reach whistle register, ever. Many sources cite Countertenor as being the rarest male vocal type, and contralto voice as being rarest overall. i would still contend that a pure bass, below the piano is the rarest male vocal. i have heard Tim use fry to go even deeper, and that is tough on the voice. People think high notes are harder on the throat. While harder to hit high notes with age, singing in Tim's, or even fry type bass demands 2 difficult things. One, is your vocal folds must be fully opened and relaxed, and two, you have to push a lot of air to do so, since the folds cannot help compress the air from your diaphragm to extend your note holding ability. In my own personal experience, extended use of my deepest bass has put my voice on the shelf for a week or 2 a few times. Going for my highest note...technically i have 4.2 octaves, 50 semitones, has never caused me anything but occasional embarrassment when it cracks. When i say technically, i can go from C# 1, up to D# 5. However, it is best that i avoid those extremes that were once quite available, now that i am older. Simply to preserve my vocal ability longer.

Like Avi Kaplan and Geoff Castelucci, Tim has insane natural subharmonics, and they can definitely mess with the amps. I sang in a group with a man who had a similar vocal range, and when he sang in the lower octaves he actually had to hold the mic further away. In a studio you can control that reverb but live, it's always a risk you just have to take.

Home Free is a phenomenal a cappella group. They come from country roots but their creations employ many genres. Check out their cover Crosby, Stills and Nash's "Helplessly Hoping" (amazing harmonies), Boyz II Men's "End of the Road", Cam's "Mayday" and John Denver's "Take Me Home Country Roads" to get a sense of the diversity of their work. They also have a great collaboration with Avi Kaplan who is a good friend from another fantastic a cappella group, Pentatonix, covering Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire", with mind blowing low notes. And their rendition of "How Great Thou Art" is not to be missed...stunning harmonies amid a spectacular backdrop; anyone with a soul will be moved.

The baritone's name is Adam Chance, but known in the band & by fans as just Chance because the beatboxer is Adam Rupp & is one of the founding members from the year 2000 whe Home Free was established. Look for their covers of End of the Road by Boyz2Men, when a Man loves a woman, and Sea Shanty Medly...that should get you started. It'll also let you see some of their humerous side !

In this video, the camera doesn't focus much on Chance, but he's the one doing the overtone singing. He starts the video with it, continues throughout, and finally he's the only one at the end. He's a baritone/bass, but Tim is the one who has that bass solo, and he's a basso profundo with a really good sound in his upper register.

Home Free's Tim, PTX's Avi and VoicePlay's Geoff are real monsters of bass singing that have to self regulate what they can do on a studio recording to not have to replace expensive equipment as you will find Tim is not as careful during live shows so can find videos of him blowing out speakers at different times.
