    Here is some information on Ren's story, in case you didn't already know. I gathered it from old newspaper interviews, articles, and Ren's livestreams and posts where he discussed his condition. Ren Eryn Gill is a British musician/independent artist; born in Wales on March 29, 1990, or ‘91 (depending on which source you cite), he grew up in Brighton. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, he began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue and subsequently dropped by Sony. Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led him to experience psychosis. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure. Ren is currently in Canada for more treatments, including surgeries, and will have to be there for at least six months (Summer of 2023). His most recent surgery went well. Ren's Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder, which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, adrenals, as well as his bones/joints. Ren stated: "It's a lot to wrap my head around having to be away from friends, family, and a successful career, and almost feels like a total juxtaposition to the fact that my music is blowing up right now and spreading to all corners of the world, but that's life, we take the good with the bad." Let's keep supporting Ren as he undergoes his treatments. Check out and subscribe to his channel, listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to this generation, and his work is needed in these troubling times. Here is the link to Ren’s GoFundMe page to raise money for his current treatment. www.gofundme.com/f/ren-get-better-from-lyme-disease-and-autoimmunity

    Ren was eventually diagnosed with Lyme disease, but it took years of misdiagnosing and being treated for things he didn't have - which is the worst possible thing to do for someone with lyme disease. A lot of the medications he took made it so much worse for him, which is how he got to psychosis and such.

    I have watched this video/reaction at least 50 times now and the thing that stood out to me the most besides the speech at the end was. "You can't kill me I am Temptation and I am IMMORTAL! Oh yeah? Well I'm HOPE and I'm ETERNAL! We are a coin of different sides...". Opposing forces battling throughout the history of time. Ren is Shakespeare like in both poetically and musically.

  • @DanKaschel

    @DanKaschel

    Ай бұрын

    Worth noting that the two faces of a coin do not oppose or battle each other. Ren is pointing out that that hope is eternally within us as human beings; so too is the urge to protect oneself, which the mind does by “managing expectations, that thing you neglected”, self-criticizing and self-sabotaging (to avoid failure). These forces seem opposed in the context of our conscious goals (because one feels “good” and the other feels “bad”), but they are actually equally important and integral parts of our minds that must both be accepted and integrated to stop the war within ourselves; to “soften” so the “dance [can get] easier”.

    I have been waiting for you two to react to this performance, and I even left a comment suggesting this song in one of your recent reactions. As I expected, you did not disappoint. “Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered more than 5 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of Ren’s songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day. Ren plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern bard; he calls his music “bardcore.” Ren’s earliest recordings on KZread are from his time in a band called “Trick The Fox,” consisting of Ren and his buddies Charlie and Tommy. Unfortunately, the band performed only briefly due to Ren’s onset of health issues. They are very talented. A fun clip to watch is “The Mash Up.” Ren’s trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master’s class in storytelling. The three acts are haunting, and the conclusion will catch you off guard. The trilogy needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline and is best watched as a whole rather than piecemeal. Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me,” “Sexual Healing,” “One Dance/Drunk in Love”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” and his latest release, “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake).” As I recently discovered, Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful. Then there are his performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the moon/No Diggity”), Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), his former bandmate, Romain Axisa (“French Song”), which are all great. Ren's performances as a member of the band "The Big Push" (which unfortunately broke up), their busking (street performances), concerts, and their live recordings, are awesome and well worth checking out. Ren's covers of "I Shot the Sheriff," "Wade in the Water," "An Englishman in New York," “Bongo Bong,” “War Pigs,” the songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” “Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," "Watch Out," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive. In anticipation of his stay in Canada for more treatments, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. He released “Sick Boi” and “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” which is another masterful work.

He works with a variety of collaborators . Brilliant but relatable, he is a talent that shines a beam of light that art comes from the human soul not from a industry machine.

    he was glued to his bed for almost 10 years because he had Lyme disease, the problem was that for almost 8-9 years this wasnt diagnosed. He was misdiagnosed with Bipolar, Anxiety, depression etc. So medications made him more sick. The Lyme disease finally got diagnosed after 8 years by a specialist. Because of the Lyme disease he was allergic to about 95% of food, so all he ate was meat and some veggies. During his sickness he got a stress induced psychosis. He finally got a stemcell transplant that made him better, but that was before the Lyme disease was noticed. Luckily today he has been in Canada for the better half of a year to undergo treatment by a Lyme disease specialist to become as healthy as his can despite of his body being destroyed by this for nearly a decade. He missed out on being a young adult, trying to see what life would bring him in the twenties, missing parties, new years etc. He actually at one point resigned to the fact that he probably would live to see his thirties because of all this. (this was before he finally got the proper help). He just turned 33 in March. Like he said, he doesnt care if he only gets 80% well, as long as he can outlive his dream which is making music, then he is okay with that.

    theatrical, creating tension, changing his voice with the character even the playing of the guitar changed between the characters, chords that use dissonance which we might normally associate with being false he made them make totally sense, the faster pace of the lights going on and off, the change of dynamics, the fight between the two characters not only musically and lyrically but also visually and then in the end the speech.... sooo much to discover and indeed totally different and unique from anything i saw so far.

    I enjoyed watching you two experience this profound video. I had a similar reaction when I watched the first time. I'm glad it seems to be having such a positive impact on such a wide variety of people, as that's exactly what good art does, and should do.

    So yea some facts on ren. 1. the song was done live if you look to the top of the gown you will see the mic and he did this as a 1 take so in total there were 4 versions of this in 1 take form and this was the one he finished on. 2. Ren was not trained on guitar he was/is self taught and learned from youtube videos. 3. So the song is about illness and mental health ren was misdiagnosed as a kid for years with depression, bipolar and other illnesses so was fed wrong medications untill finally he got a proper diagnosed with lyme disease and is now still going through treatment. Finally while he was misdiagnosed he actually signed with sony studios but due to his illness and not being able to keep his comitments with sony they dropped him and is a independent artist

    Love your reactions guys. Ren's music is incredible and refreshing to see talking about illness and his misdiagnosed Lymes disease. Ren and The Big Push are awesome.

    he did. it's a brilliant story. but this is an "art piece", not a song, not a video, not a play, but all of these with emotion and heart.

    my connection to this song is only the similarity of struggle,, i'm undiagnosed autistic and have struggled with being a bit weird my whole life i had to start my own business because i had problems holding a job with sleep disorders and high ethics.. but managed to stay in business the last 40 years without needing to advertise or even carry a card, i run a lawn and tree service, a 1st responder thru 40 years of hurricanes in fla ,and do all phases of construction and kind of an inventor on the side, after six years of development i figured out a disaster response product that could help millions worldwide .. then my insurance agent forgot to post a payment back in 2020 and the state took everything i worked the last 40 years for away .. stuck at home like a prisoner i came online and saw people helping others so i started making videos explaining what i was. trying to do to get help, and found out if the platform your uploading to doesn't promote you your just talking to your phone, and then i see stuff like this and get jealous because i will never write a song that gets peoples attn like this. so my chances of bringing my ideas to the world are fading. and it's scary as hell to think of all that could be, but it may all be lost because one person forgot to hit enter on there keyboard.. and my chances of succeeding alone are close to those of getting out of quicksand alone..
