Heilung is an experimental folk music band made up of members from Denmark, Norway, and Germany.[3] Their music is based on texts and runic inscriptions from Germanic peoples of the Bronze Age[citation needed], Iron Age, and Viking Age. Heilung describe their music as "amplified history from early medieval northern Europe". Their music is usually about Germanic deities, The Jǫtnar, and valkyries. "Heilung" is a German noun meaning "healing" in English.[4]

Like I told an old pagan friend of mine when I showed him this; "It feels legitimate, because it is!" Heilung are absolutely serious about what they do. You mentioned Wardruna. Christopher, one of the founding members, is also in Wardruna. This kind of music is often experienced as unnerving simply because it is so raw and down to the roots of an ancestral people who lived a much more primitive life before the oncoming wave of Roman occupation and warfare, which this song is possibly referring to directly. They are also incredibly lovely and humble people if you ever get to see one of their interviews. These folks are totally, 100% dedicated to what they're doing; sharing a lost history with the modern world, and I'm still blown away by them!

Cheers from Sweden. I remember when i first heard their music it was a torch lighted up inside me. I just got mesmerized like if i knew this kind of music. Years before i had become more spiritual with our scandinavian nature feeling more at peace and at home in a deep forest or big mountain overlook. Its like my primal nature wants to break free the bonds we have in our society. I learned alot too by reading about nature "magic" that there exist leylines and especially in forests with old ancient trees. I actually found a place in sothern Sweden were old Fagus sylvatica (Bok-träd) made a perfect ring of trees and in that centre if you sit there its like time and space just disappear and you can really go into a resting trance. Great reaction guys you made me sub :). I would be probably be called a witch in christian Sweden prior to removal of religious laws :). Big hug and respect.

The Germanic ancient culture was an extremely warlike culture but also very much in touch with nature. Small villages scattered connected by a variety of clans. To go to their kind of heaven (Valhalla)you had to die in battle to show yourself deserving. Dying by old age you were considered undeserving and went to helheim (hell). There is no short way to explain everything. This song is more about giving you what they belive is the ancient feel/atmosphere to the culture. Trying to sing in an ancient or proto even Germanic language.

Even if you die in battle you'd have a 50% chance of going to Folkvangr instead of Valhalla. More importantly, Hel isn't a bad place for those who are "undeserving". It's the default afterlife most of us will find ourselves in and frankly I'd rather go there than fight and die every day. If Hel is where Baldr went when he died, it's good enough for the rest of us.

YES Heilung!! They are definitely niche, but they do a ton of research and try and make things as authentic as they can. This is basically the type of ritualistic music that would have been performed by Vikings. If you picture listening to this in the woods under a bonfire with these types of costumes and instruments it's probably the closest thing to a Viking rock concert that we can experience today. I find it fascinating how music is universal and even music from a different culture in a style that's over 1,000 years old or older still has a way of entertaining people. _(The demonic sound is called throat singing and it was common with Vikings and also in Mongolia, and parts of India and Africa)_ Even though they are very niche - they actually have made a bit of a success for themselves in providing music for movies, tv shows, and video games that are Viking or Nordic-themed. The history channel series "Vikings", the movie, "The Northman", and the upcoming video game, "Hellblade: Senua's Saga" coming out later this year all have music by Heilung. Other good songs of theirs are "Heilung | LIFA - Hamrer Hippyer LIVE" and "Heilung | LIFA - In Maidjan LIVE" If you want to check out other interesting world music, there's a Mongolian Rock band called "The Hu" that has a bunch of really good songs, you'd like "The HU - Yuve Yuve Yu" Cheers!

Except the Scots were never celts. That was bs invented by an academic in the 19th C. Before then there isn't one written record of the British or Irish ppl being celtic. The celts were an iberian ppl. That's how they know through generic analysis that the Amesbury archer wasn't British. You, like most others, have bought into yet another historical lie. They lie about recent history like C nineteen, and 911, which will go down in official history just as they want to frame it, but anyone with a brain knows that's all bogus..but IT WILL become official history, just as history will tell us Oswald killed jfk and bundy acted all alone etc. And as I'm Welsh and supposedly 'celtic' these aren't just my ancestors from centuries ago and across an ocean, they're my family and neighbours and they all also believe all this celtic nonsense, that's because they too haven't done the research and get all their information from mainstream sources.

I love listening to their album "Lifa" when I am driving home late at night. There are usually elk and deer on the roadsides, and when I see them, and avoid them, I think of Maria Franz's antlers. I believe the song is about when the Christian invaders came to their lands and war came about. You should look up the lyrics. It'll give you a better understanding. I'm Native American (Navajo), and I had my mother listen to it as we were driving home one night. She really enjoyed the album. She's more traditional than I am, and speaks fluent Navajo. I feel like this group is a resurgence of their people's indigenous ways that was suppressed by colonization, which is good, because it is a part of their identity as human being living with, instead of against, mother nature while under father sky. I suggest you guys check out "In Maidjan" and "Alfadhirhaiti". Also, Maria's voice is absolutely amazing and bewitching.

I'm Norwegian and I get what you mean but I don't think "Christian invaders" or "suppressed by colonization" are the right terms. Christianity did take over from the old Gods of Norse mythology but it didn't happen through invasions. Just local leaders travelling and discovering new cultures and Gods they could bring back home to and excerpt parts of it to gain power over their tribes and eventually the whole country. The only colonizers we've had here are Danes and Swedes and that was long after Christianity. There was no immigration going on here until we struck oil. It was the other way around. Our people emigrated to America. Nobody came here cause why would they? If we ignore the past 60 years or so of oil riches there has never been any reason for anyone to invade this country. There hasn't been anything to gain. Norway has been sparsely populated, not technologically advanced apart from that little 200 year period of building great boats and generally so poor we travelled for months into the unknown across treacherous seas just to find something worth stealing. It wasn't all looting and pillaging, some were just traders, but there was certainly some of it. I have seen videos from the Gathering of Nations and our people do seem to have a lot in common. Your culture and mine isn't as young as US culture nor is it forgotten so there may be more in common between us because of that. I'd love to come over and take part. That's if I'd be welcome at such an event of course. I'd totally understand if I wasn't though!

Listening to Heilung (which means Healing) - is participating in ceremony, their music is a shared ritual, and a beautiful display of our European culture before before it was obliterated by the evils of christianity. Heilung has changed my life in so many ways 💖 The "tapping sticks" are human bones, the sigils on their drums are painted with all of the members blood - their "niche" is amplified history.

So They have multiple albums each dedicated to a specific type of person. There is a "male" album and a "female" album both with each type of energy. The newest album is geared towards their child, so I am excited to see what that will be. They have translations for most of their songs, which is a mix of proto-Germanic, Goth, old english, ancient roman, old norse. Some songs are directly taken from carvings and translated into a song, or from the viking sagas into the songs.

Vikings are about 800 years ago, this is more proto norse around 2 thousand years old and takes the earliest carvings and Norse sagas as inspiration for the lyrics, this band formed from a historical re-enactment group and everything they use is genuine, including the human bones Maria plays, love from UK where we have danes, also old Norse who integrated into UK culture many years ago :) eg Wednesday = wodens day = odin's day

So just to clarify, what Heilung represents is Bronze Age pre-Viking time period. They use several languages. Some being dead languages like Elder Futhark which would be represented with “Runes” ᚴᚱᛁᚷᛋᚷᚨᛚᛞᚱ(krigsgaldr) All instruments and stage dress are handmade and traditional. The bones Maria is using are human fibula bones. (True) Krigsgaldr means “War magic” And some lyrics are adapted from the Eggja stone. A gravestone found in Sogndal, Norway by a farmer in 1917. Two of the core members of the band Christopher Juul and Maria Franz are members of two other musical bands as well. Euzen and Songleikr. Euzen is modern while Songleikr is Scandinavian folk. Kai Uwe Faust(w/horns throat singing) is a German born tattoo artist in Copenhagen, Denmark. This is the bands motto…. “Remember, that we all are brothers All people, beasts, trees and stone and wind We all descend from the one great being That was always there Before people lived and named it Before the first seed sprouted”

Hello! first time watching you two! I really appreciate your openness to this culture as it is a part of my heritage. Wardruna (keeper of the runes (secrets)) and Heilung (healing) are both based on connecting to European and especially Scandiavian history, culture and spirituality of our ancestors. Thank you so much for listening and your feedbaCK. It is definitely coming from a similar place as Native American rituals and music. (fyi, it;'s not "demonic" singing, it's known in older cultures as "throat singing", most commonly kown, I think, from Mongolia, which denotes a connection with subconcious/.spirit realms). Thanks again.

I had no idea you had discovered Heilung yet! Maria Franz is the flawless/stunning female with the bone taps and sweet vocals. I call her our secret weapon,as she is truly a Norwegian Powerhouse, but a total sweetheart and soo modest, down to earth. Her husband Christopher Juul is the gentleman with the ponytail 7:49 He is the founder of this band and hes Danish. Have you by chance seen In Maidjan yet by Heilung? Since i know Asia is into singing, she should really listen to that performance,it has mindblown even vocal coaches and left reactors speechless. She shows abit of her range in In Maidjan, compared to Krigsgaldr where she only sounds "sweet". Krigsgaldr means "War Magic" btw,and you are correct. Heilung performs traditional tribal Viking history music, and theyr clothes and instruments etc are all identical to actual findings from that era.

To clarify the meaning of the song a bit; The repeated chorus is taken directly from a runestone found in Norway, and is thought to be some kind of funeral rites. The English portion in the middle is a mournful declaration of war against someone the writer once loved like a brother. Effectively the song was written to emulate what it might have been like to listen to a war-song or prayer in Norway in the ~1100s (with some creative license taken in the case of the "rap" portion, which is mostly there to make the song more comprehensible to people who don't happen to study Old Norse - most of their stuff doesn't have any English at all)

  • @Dang3rMouSe
    @Dang3rMouSe Жыл бұрын

The lyrics for the middle section: What am I supposed to do If I want to talk about peace and understanding (But you only understand the language of the sword) What if I want to make you understand that the path you chose leads to downfall (But you only understand the language of the sword) What if I want to tell you to leave me and my beloved ones in peace (But you only understand the language of the sword) I let the blade do the talking, so my tongue shall become iron And my words the mighty roar of war Revealing my divine anger's arrow shall strike All action for the good of all, I see my reflection in your eyes But my new age has just begun The sword is soft in the fire of the furnace It hungers to be hit and wants to have a hundred sisters In the coldest state of their existence, they may dance the maddest In the morass of the red rain Beloved brother enemy I sing my sword song for you, the lullaby of obliteration So I can wake up with a smile and bliss in my heart and bliss in my heart and bliss in my heart... Coexistence, conflict, combat, devastation, regeneration, transformation That is the best I can do for you I see a grey gloom on the horizon that promises a powerful sun to rise To melt away all moons It will make the old fires of purification look like dying embers, look like dying embers, look like dying embers look like dying embers, look like dying embers, look like dying embers look like dying embers, look like dying embers, look like dying embers... For me I feel like it is describing conflict with another group who refuses to listen to reason. This forces a call to arms to completely obliterate this enemy as this kind of enemy can not be reasoned with. Just my own views though. Love you 2, thx for the reaction

From what I remember off the top of my head, they translated old germanic language songs to the best of their abilities from what little knowledge they had from the roman era. Don't quote me on that, but I do know it was from the Tribal era of Germania pre Christianity. I believe they are part of a pre christian decolonizing movement as many young Europeans are trying to get back to their ancestral customs and spiritual roots, like Norse, Germanic, and Celtic paganism. Much to the same effect as African americans, Natives, and latinos are doing here in the Americas. European Pagans, African tribes, Native tribes, and Pacific Islanders, just to name a few, have already reached out to eachother in solidarity as it is starting to become a global movement. In their efforts, they are learning they have vastly more similarities than differences in their ancestral cultures, customs, and spritiuality.

Heilung is old Norse, based off of Runes. The guy doing the throat singing is an actual shaman. A lot of their music was in the show Vikings, along with another group called Wardruna, that might be a bit easier for you to absorb. The lead singer from that group actually wrote and performed a lot of the traditional songs on Vikings and appeared in it as an extra. Wardruna's collab with Aurora Helvegan would be a good place to start.

The Mayflower landed in the US in 1620 ... The Brits brought the first slaves to the Thirteen Colonies in 1526 ... Heilung (which is German for _healing_ ) is singing this song in proto-Germanic, which predates what is called Norse. This song is from the 3rd century !!!! Now imagine you are a young Roman legionnaire up in the Scottish Highlands guarding the construction of Hadrian's Wall ... while people who live, breathe and die by this music/culture are unseen only 150 yards away hiding right behind the forest edge. Fun fact: The bandmembers had already performed either individually or with other bands, but this concert was their VERY FIRST live appearence as a band.
