A little hillbilly history: My family came to America in 1621 (Jamestown) and my wife's on the Mayflower. My family were Scots, they eventually moved to the foothills of the Appalachians, receiving land grants from the King and Gov. of N. Carolina to build farms there. These are the people that became what many call "hillbillies" or rednecks, many English, Irish, and Scottish in origin. The term redneck has roots in Scotland in the 1640's associated with the Covenanters who wore red scarves about their necks to signal their blood loyalty to the Presbyterian religion. My family fled Scotland as they were Presbyterians, persecuted in their homeland. My first American ancestor was married to Ellin Hamilton, Daughter of a famous Scottish Presbyterian minister, Sir Robert Hamilton. These immigrants settled in the Appalachians because it was very similar to their homeland in the UK and we very removed from the centralized governing centers in the big cities. Even the hillbilly dialect you hear is actually a form of Olde English from the 16th and 17th centuries, ie. "Pig in a poke." These people were hardy, tough, independent, and very untrusting of Government and outsides. This has not changed much in almost 500 years and is represented very well in this song. So these are my people, proud and tough. So, in a way, we're cut from the same cloth as some in the UK, I hope you can appreciate our relationship to you blokes across the pond. 🙂

Fun family story for your kin; however, there are many stories about the origins of the term “redneck”. Most scholars agree that the term probably was originally used at least a century before the Mine Wars (1920), to refer to southern farmers who were exposed to long hours in the sun while working in the fields. I don't know who made up the Scots/Presbyterian angle that you believe, but I've never heard of it and my family has been in America since 1706- North Carolina as farmers.

My granddaughters learn all this before they were 12 years old. They can drop a deer, field dress it, skin it and cut it the way their mother said . They knew how to cook and eat what they caught. They can catch fish until after the sun went down. They can whittle spoons forks, and was taught how to forge metal for knives. They all own guns, a hand gun and shot gun. Plus they do their own reloads. I wasn't going to have any helpless granddaughters that can't take care of themselves. They do gardening and learned how to can what they grow. That's my girls. And proud of them.

Hank Jr is the epitome of cool. He showed massive attitude when he went to Hollywood for the Country Music awards. He was very disrespectful to them and kicked butt because of their arrogance. He walked out. He stands up for patriotism, Southern American culture and country living. I have grown to respect country music because of him. My favorite country song.

This song is so true. Country girls can do those things as well. Our Dad taught us as much as he did the boys in spite of Mama's objections. Hank Jr is part of a sub genre of country known as Outlaw Country. Many older artist are part of Outlaw Country such as Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson. They went on tour together. Their Song Highwaymen is one I think you would enjoy. His Mama had him touring and singing his Dad's songs from a young age. Her influence is why he sounded like his Dad. We were glad when he developed his own style. His son, Hank III, looks and sounds identical to Hank Sr. We really love him too.

Sorry for being a nit pick but gotta correct ya- it’s actually a *trot* line. There’s not really such a thing that we would refer to as a “trout line” unless you’re fishing in a trout only area and you are just saying your fishing line is catching only trout. A trotline is basically a long line with multiple hooks along the line that you set across a small stream and leave it for an extended period and come back and get whatever fish have taken the bait. Typically you just put a lot of barbed hooks (some people might use treble hooks for maximum effectiveness but im not 100 percent sure as i have little experiences with trotlines) on one line spread apart from each other with the bait of your choosing. The purpose of a trotline is twofold: firstly, you can just set the line and leave it and don’t have to worry about being around to catch the fish Secondly, you can put tons of hooks on it and can catch massive amounts of fish at one time so when you pull your trotline out, you’ll have a ton of fish at once instead of catching one by one with a rod and reel. Most of the time it’s catfish that will bite on trotlines and catfish are a good source of food. For example: say you have a stream/river that’s 100 feet wide. you get 100 foot of line (plus a little bit to tie the knots) and tie hooks however far apart you deem appropriate (let’s say every 10 feet), bait each hook, and tie it onto something (normally a tree but you can use a stake in the ground or a log) on each side of the river. You leave it there a few hours or overnight. You come back, untie the trotline, and harvest whatever fish have bitten onto it. If you’re lucky and are in a river saturated with catfish, you’ll have 10 catfish to harvest for eating. It’s kind of cheating from a sportsman’s perspective, but if you’re catching fish for eating as a food source, it’s a VERY good survival technique. It’s illegal in a lot of places, but if you’re trying to survive because you’re stranded or just can’t afford food and want to have some decent eating and not eating bugs, you’ll run trotlines. That was why he used the term trotline. I myself have never had the need to do it, but I have been to plenty of community fish fry’s where the fish served was caught on a trotline because they were needing to catch 20-30 fish for a group meal so they just set some trotlines overnight and in the morning had 20-30 catfish hooked. Anyway, hope that helps 🙂 Here’s the wiki for more info en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trotline

FX announced Friday morning that the team from the Emmy-winning series "Justified" is getting back together for a limited series that will be titled "Justified: City Primeval." Timothy Olyphant will again play U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, the character created for the page by the late novelist Elmore Leonard." Looking forward to that one!

Everybody loves country music, they just don't all know it yet. Always great seeing newcomers listening to country songs I've loved and known for decades because you actually notice things or appreciate things in the songs that I never did. In a way it's like hearing them for the first time again. I know tons of country, it's like some weird skill I've acquired over time, haha, so let me know if you ever want to hear a particular type of country song because I know a lot of them. I'm a Texas guy and we have our own genre basically and there's so much stuff no one ever reacts to on here, old and new. Lots of great stuff is rarely ever heard outside of the state.

If we wouldn't all go to jail I'd for SURE send you 2 Brits some homemade wine! Shhhhhhhh....... Anyhow, "Family Tradition", "All My Rowdy Friends" and "Young Country" are great Hank songs too. You might put Gretchen Wilson "Red Neck Woman" in the country queue, that'll be a fun one for you Gents! I took that picture of B1 giving Hank the thumbs up!!! FOR REAL THOUGH, MY HEART BELONGS TO SLAYER AND ALL THAT IS METAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Chuey's Mama B1 really enjoyed that one and it was a great song from the get go. We will follow up with more from Hank Jr and Gretchen too. Did you watch "Justified"? I binge watched the whole six seasons in a few weeks and really enjoyed the dark and the humour in that Series, I did read recently they are going to do a new short season. At the moment I have been watching the "Bosch" series, I read all the books way back and really enjoying the TV show. Ah and the new series of "Reacher" again I read all the "Lee Child" books and the TV show is very close. When you say little southern town, where are you located? We of course know your heart belongs to Slayer, but it's always great we we find something you enjoy too. Have a great day out there ma'am

@@BritPopsReact If I watch tv I'm into history, science, non-fiction stuff. The last book I read was Claire Cameron's "The Last Neanderthal", my favorite book series is Jean Auel's "Clan of the Cave Bear" and so on. Prior to that it was all H.P. Lovecraft, Stephen King, and Judy Blume! When I go to the "city" for big buys, supplies, doctor appointments I go to the great 'ole land of Mayberry, NC. Known to us as Mt. Airy, NC. I don't live there, but that's the closest town. I can stand on my roof and spit into Vriginia, I could walk to Tennessee, in a day. Galax, VA is closer but I keep it in NC.

This song to me is about additude, I'm from central Wisconsin and everything he talks about exsists here as well. Except we don't catch as many catfish, we catch other species. In a small US town everybody knows who lives there and in hard times we pull together to sustain that community. I'm sure that may be true all around the world. In the big city people just don't know the person who lives down the street, many don't care about the person who lives next door. Although it wasn't always that way.

My Stepfathers dad was named bocephus and he was borned in Georgia in the late 19th century. You mispronounced it. internet search. “Bo” is the anglicized Southern version of the French Gulf Coast's “Beau.” Best theory, then: Beau Cephas, or Bocephus, refers to “Good Peter,” the apostle. Some say that in Cajun French the appellation has come to mean any boon companion.
