• GANGgajang - Sounds Of...
SOUNDS OF THEN (THIS IS AUSTRALIA )
(M.Callaghan)
I think I hear the sounds of then,
And people talking,
The scenes recalled, by minute movement,
And songs they fall, from the backing tape.
That certain texture,that certain smell,
To lie in sweat, on familiar sheets,
In brick veneer on financed beds.
In a room, of silent hardiflex
That certain texture, that certain smell,
Brings home the heavy days,
Brings home the the night time swell,
Out on the patio we'd sit,
And the humidity we'd breathe,
We'd watch the lightning crack over canefields
Laugh and think, this is Australia.
The block is awkward - it faces west,
With long diagonals, sloping too.
And in the distance, through the heat haze,
In convoys of silence the cattle graze.
That certain texture, that certain beat,
Brings forth the night time heat.
Out on the patio we'd sit,
And the humidity we'd breathe,
We'd watch the lightning crack over canefields
Laugh and think that this is Australia.
To lie in sweat, on familiar sheets,
In brick veneer on financed beds.
In a room of silent hardiflex
That certain texture, that certain smell,
Brings forth the heavy days,
Brings forth the night time sweat
Out on the patio we'd sit,
And the humidity we'd breathe,
We'd watch the lightning crack over canefields
Laugh and think, this is Australia.
This is Australia etc..
Ganggajang (suzi will need to look this one up) is a great Australian band. It started as a writing project for a tv show about a band . I think when the director sent them alist of special effects for this clip, they must have ticked select all :-)

So I was sitting here watching this video and there was a cheeky bloody huntsman spider 'blending in' at the edge of the desk. I'm not big on spiders but, as most Australians will probably agree after a handful of beers neither of us seemed to give a rat's arse and life resumed it's natural course.

The Rhythm section of Gangajang were original members of THE ANGELS. CHRIS BAILEY on BASS & BUZZ BIDSTRUP on DRUMS. MARK CALLAGHAN the LEAD SINGER of GANGAJANG was in a Band called THE RIPTIDES from Brisbane in the early 80's. I am the proud owner of "Hearts and Flowers" which was a 7" vinyl record by them in 1981. GANGAJANG had a string of Hit Singles of moderate success in the mid 80's. Great to see LIVE. A mate and I, who are both Drummers, were determined to get the attention of BUZZ BIDSTRUP and have a chat with him. The chat was brief, but we were thrilled that he spoke with us. Nice guy.

It's an anagram of Ganga Gang. If you know what I mean. I was a manager in a hardware store and the lead singer's niece worked there. This is very much a Northern rivers, Queensland song. It's NOT the big spiders that you have to worry about. Koalas move slowly because they're stoned basically, on eucalyptus leaves. 😁😁

This song is my personal favourite of the Australia songs bcos apart from being completely a cool song, it reminds me of growing up in Broken Hill, NSW, before we had air conditioning. The TV would be carted outside onto the verandah (a patio) & we'd watch TV in the front garden, under sundown & into the evening before going to bed for school the next day. We never used the front verandah for anything else.

8:16 @TheWolfHunterZ IIRC That's because they doped up on eucalyptus leaves, which are very hard to digest but one of the few, if only creatures in the world to live of eating them. That contributes to their eyes and tendency to sleep longer periods, including what Suzi observed, that robotic thing ;)

Chat GPT says about the name Ganggajang: The Australian band Ganggajang took its name from an Aboriginal Australian word, "gangga," which means "to communicate." It is pronounced as "gang-uh-jang." The band's name reflects their interest in creating music that communicates with and connects to their audience, as well as their appreciation for the diverse cultural heritage of Australia, including its indigenous languages and traditions. pronounced as "gang-uh-jang." vowels are short a - as in bang; uh - as in uh; short a - in gang

I think I may have already suggested this song, but as you are loving things related to Australia; you should react to The Seekers "I Am Australian", all 5 verses from The Final Farewell Concert. It's like listening to Australian History.

If you ever make the trip, work out beforehand what kind of Australia you want to see and experience. If you want snow, we got snow. If you want rain forest, we got that. If you want beaches, we have a very large supply. And we have no shortage of desert. As Australia is a very multi cultural society, the food scene is great. We also make lots of great wine, and brew proper beer. Just remember that Australia is a very big place, (6th largest country on the planet). So don't think you can do it all in 2 weeks.

Gang : as in gangland and " a " as in ah and then jang, as in " fang " but with a j. Gang a jang. This song is an Australian icon. The original video doesn't do justice. Its a sound thing. Staying for a month in the far north east tropical humid heat, near the sugar cane fields, and then having a friday evening rest on the verandah as a storm comes in with much needed rain, - will give you the " feel " of this song. Then when you play it with your eyes closed, you will " get it ". All about the senses and the heat of the headonistic natural environment. 😊

She got it right first time. You guys have tarantulas, so you can't talk about our spiders. A koala has teeth and claws, so you have to let them do what they want.
