I went to a Distant Worlds performance once, and they performed this song as an encore. Since it was an encore though, they didn't have the choir, so they instead did asked the audience to sing the vocal parts ourselves. They said we only needed to do the "Sephiroth" lines, but we did the whole thing. Also, since Nobuo Uematsu was at the performance, he got up on the stage and directed us. I will say, among the FF villain themes, I would also suggest Dancing Mad.

I also went to a Distant Worlds performance, and they actually played the Advent Children version of the song. Uematsu was there as a surprise though, we had no idea. So... right as the key change happens and the electric guitar part starts, the choir shifts apart, and down from the risers comes Uematsu shredding it.

For me, the only other JRPG final boss music that has this epic of a feeling is Unrestrained Struggle from Valkyrie Profile 2. While it's not as popular of a game as Final Fantasy VII, I think the soundtrack for it is criminally underrated. Unrestrained Struggle Dancing Without Malice Or Mercy Indescribable Grief Never Surrender Start Up From Prolonged Darkness A Thoughtful Strategy Multiplexed Contradiction In Order To Acquire The Light In That Hand Movement Of Distorted Causality Climax Coming From The Abyss A Motion Of Finishing Blow Sank Memories Disturb The Doubtful Sleep No Knowledge Of Wisdom Neighboring Infinity Celestial Troupe I'd recommend for anyone to listen to these if you haven't heard them.
I think the best way to see how this song is used visually is if you look up the final battle scene from Advent Children. That whole fight just looks amazing with One-Winged Angel.

Agree. I didn't like the Advent Children version either but it was different than all other One Winged Angel versions who share the music and the lyrics in Latin. Ac version is the only one who has completely different lyrics about anger, rage and not to be a memory.
One-Winged Angel as a musical track can be very well exemplified by this line from SAO Abridged: "There's no need to wonder where your god is. Because he's right here, (whispered) and he's fresh out of mercy."
This isn't just a boss battle, it's THE boss battle. Sephiroth is one of the greatest antagonists in video game history.

Admittedly, this is an arrangement for full symphony and choir. And it is as amazing performed live as you would think. But the original PlayStation version sounded quite different; did have the vocals, though. As a trivia item, except for the cries of "Sephiroth", the lyrics to "One-Winged Angel" are cribbed from Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana".
Distant Worlds is the name of the orchestral tour for the Final Fantasy OST compositions. They have done several tours already, world wide!
Thank you for reacting to this! This version is good but I personally like the remake version too! It's about 10mins long too! In regards to final fantasy music, each song can bee somewhere between 1.30mins to 15mins (15mins are usually the ending/credit songs for each game). OWA is the Game's Villain's Theme song and is most primarily featured during his final boss battle. "Distant Worlds" (the version you listened to) is the name of the Final Fantasy Concert Series, and would have been recorded at one of the concerts. There are undoubtedly other live performances, though.
Probably the only other FF final boss battle music that can match One Angel in its... grandiosity. I would have to say is Dancing Mad from VII's predecessor VI.
@ranekeisenkralle8265
Жыл бұрын
While i will concede that Dancing Mad is pretty high up there, in my opinion it does not match up to One Winged Angel. Close, but not quite. Going by the Distant Worlds version, I have to say Dancing Mad suffers a bit from repetitiveness during the second act (minutes two to four). The organ in other parts does lend it a lot of power though. In a way Dancing Mad's biggest problem (from my perspective) is that it "builds" throughout the stages of the battle, resulting in feeling much like a combination of several themes, rather than one coherent piece. This is where it falls short of One Winged Angel as far as I am concerned. One Winged Angel is just full-power from start to finish - no buildup required.
How did Luke never hear this! Nobuo Uematsu (the composer) is so good, he did a lot of songs for FF. I played piano for quite a while and played a lot of his songs. My piano teacher was always surprised too how good they were and loved them. Even my school music teacher asked me for the sheet once after I played an Uematsu song lol.
The very first time I had heard this song was being surprised that I hadn't won. From a black screen this song starts playing. Then Sephiroth descends from the sky, and you have one more battle to win. And it blew me away.
Somnus & Apocalypsis Noctis, both from Final Fantasy XV, are worth checking out
THIS! this is the OST that I love the most!!! not only 'cause I'm a FF fan but also because the villain represented by this song is iconic in a lot of ways... your reaction was fantastic man!
Oh man you have to do the FFVII Remake version of this. Its a long song but its a good one they defintely did a good job a modernizing a classic
GOTgames: what could possibly be happening that warrants an orchestra!? Me: sephiroth breathed.
This is Sephiroth's theme song - the final boss of the original game. There's a rendition of this song in all the instances and games he appears in (even Kingdom Hearts and Smash Bros)
Man, wait till he gets to the Remake versions. This, Jenova and Those Who Fight Further from those games are amazing. XD
Distant Worlds is the group that does live shows around the world. I've gone to see them a few times, and it was amazing every time. They always play this song, with the full orchestra and quire. I haven't played much of the Final Fantasy games, but I am familiar with most of the music, so it is always a treat to listen to it live.
FFX's "suteki da ne" is a earworm and a sin not to play on repeat .Or FFVIII Liberi Fatali , great Orchestra music with choir .
The orchestral concert is distant worlds. Its amazing and seeing a choir to this song is amazing. One winged angel is the most iconic boss theme in all of final fantasy vii. Sephiroth is the main villain of ff7, this song is during his boss fight. Its sinister.
I like how you asked what could be happening to warrant this epic song. Literally the end of the world. It's beautiful.
Funny enough my favorite moment hearing this ost was in the smash bros reveal. The initial shock of Sephiroth appearing followed by the shivering fear of "oh s*** its Sephiroth....RUN!" This, Xenoblade and Legend of Zelda are peak for me in videogame music.
Oh no... you've opened the FF gates. Just wait until you do a single FFXIV song... All us XIV players will immediately start begging you to do _so many_ songs from it, because it has _so many_ great tracks in so many different styles and contexts. Nobuo Uematsu and Masayoshi Soken, the composers for FFXIV, are literal wizards. The crazy amazing music they make are easily some of the best music I've ever heard.
I literally just listened to a live orchestral performance of this song the day before you posted this at the sage theatre in newcastle what are the odds youd react to it the very next day
If you want the best Final Fantasy orchestral experience then listen to the Distant Worlds albums. They are absolutely phenomenal! And they contain a great mix of tracks from various FF games! I especially recommend Dancing Mad, Answers, Somnus, and Opera Maria and Draco.
Was amazing seeing One Winged Angel live 😁. It's so iconic. There are lots of great tracks in Final Fantasy.
I went to the Distant Worlds concert in my city like 2 months ago and as soon as One-Winged Angel started everyone was cheering lol. I’ve never played FF7 but the song is so iconic anyways!
FFVII Is one of my 3 favorite games of all time, after FFIX and maybe Nier:Automata. And one winged angel is great. That having been said, it's not even my favorite, literally every song in these three games is amazing. FFIX has, in my opinion, the best OST ever, a true masterpiece, and Nier: Automata is not much worse, and FFVII is no slouch either. This song definitely hits harder in context though, although most FF songs do. If you enjoyed this one I recommend you react to "Jenova" from ffvii:Remake. Or the "airbuster" score. Honestly, all FF music is worth reacting to, and you should. Another good one is the "Final fantasy theme" itself, which I consider one of gaming national anthems, there is a different version for each final fantasy though XD
I literally attended the concert this album comes from, and seeing and hearing this piece played live gave me goosebumps.
Yes, there is a final fantasy orchestra, I got to see them in 2019 and holy shit, feeling One Winged Angel vibrating in your chest is something else. They also saved it for the encore, and when that first note hit, every light in the concert hall turned red all at once. Spectacular.
I was able to see this live and definitely recommend seeing it as it was an awesome performance! Still recommend listening to "Scream" From FF14, one of my favorite Raid Boss songs.
One of the reasons this song is so legendary is because it's essentially the theme song for FF7's main antagonist, Sephiroth, who is among the most iconic villains in gaming. Both he and the game's protagonist, Cloud, are like the poster boys for heroes and villains in the JRPG genre. They both even got into Super Smash Bros! My personal favorite of the Final Fantasy big orchestral boss themes has to be "Hellfire" from FF15. It plays during the battle against Ifrit, with parts of the music leaning into styles associated with the Arabic origins of the character's namesake.
This is the final boss music for FF7! In the original game, after you defeat the boss's first form, the screen goes totally black and THIS starts playing - BUM BUM BUM BUM deedee DEEdee deedee DEEdee - before the scene loads back in and you see the boss's Final Form. If you're not expecting it, it can absolutely drop your heart into your shoes, even in its original MIDI format. FF7 has some of the best music in video games, bar none. And the recent remake did a wonderful job of updating and remixing it. If you've never played FF7, I ABSOLUTELY recommend playing it - you can start with either the original or the remake, they are pretty different games but either one can serve as a good starting point. If you're interested in checking out more from FF7, I recommend reacting to the Final Fantasy VII Remake opening scene. It'll give you a much better sense of the kind of epicness this game world deals with. Or, if you aren't really planning to play the game and want a bit of a laugh, go look up a compilation of streamers reacting to hearing Sephiroth's theme and the start of the final battle in the FF7 Remake. The combination of sheer delight and total terror on the faces of anyone who played the original game is absolutely hilarious.
Oh this gives the chills every time... When i finally got into that last battle in ff7 and this started playing, i was sure i was done for, and it was epic!
I can't believe we got this in 1997 (albeit more midi and less orchestral) but it truly was ahead of its time to hear something this epic and truly masterful in a video game, especially in the context in which it was played
I was at a distant worlds concert where they performed it. I loved it. It was amazing. The guy next to me really belted out Sephiroths name. I would recommend trying to find a distant world recording to see the orchestra
this version, Distant Worlds, is a live orchestra version, the game version is compressed and sound dated. There's also a different, Rock/metal version called Advent: One-Winged Angel done for the movie and performed by Uematsu's very own The Black Mages band. This is the Final Boss theme.
On the topic of final bosses, I'd recommend Serpent Eating the Ground/The Serpent that Devours the Horizon from Bravely Default. Has to be one of my favourite boss themes and is actually composed by Revo, the lead of Sound Horizon and its side project Linked Horizon, who composed the openings for Attack on Titan ;).
Going back to your question about if there are live performances for this soundtrack, there actually is! Here in Vancouver, Canada, about a month ago, they had a whole orchestra here playing the soundtrack to this! I was working at the time so I couldn't go, but I would pay any money to go and see the orchestra. This game was a blast from my childhood, and really the only game that stood out. The game and soundtrack were both revolutionary for its time!
I’ve went to the orchestral concert and they kept it for the very end. The first notes start and the crowd goes insane
I was just looking at ff7 remake clips and then I see this notification xD perfect timing
"What could be happening in the game to warrant this?" Well that's partially why the music is so memorable. Because the Sephiroph battle pulls out a *minute long* cutscene of him causing a supernova, destroying all the planets, and raining fiery hell on your party while this song plays. It looks so amazing and it is completely, totally unskippable so all you can do is sit there and listen to this while the attack comes your way.
One-Winged Angel is incredible. It was great to see you react to such a legendary and well-known video game track. I recommend reacting to Answers and Dragonsong from Final Fantasy 14 and Dance of Curse from The Vision of Escaflowne anime.
I can't believe this reaction slipped by me. Man, this is the boss battle music to end all boss battle music. Its one of those songs, that at the first chord, you recognize it and get immediately hyped, your blood starts pumping. It gives you this feeling of pure awesomeness, something amazing is about to happen.

This got fused into my psyche back in the 90s and every-time I feel genuine dread or my fight or flight gets triggered I hear it in my head, this and battle of big bridge, which is also a Final Fantasy music come to think.....
Some overlooked epic songs imo come from Everquest Planes of Power expansion. Tower of Solusek ro, Bastion of thunder, Plane of Storms, Plane of Time, Plane of Disease are all worth checking out.
You definitely need to check the final battle sequence for this to see how it ties in (either the actual game or Advent Children scene).
You want to look up the Distant Worlds concert. Last I looked, you could find a few on KZread. I actually went to see it when it came through my home city last year, wonderful concert. man from all time fan of final fantasy you gotta watch the gameplay when the one-winged angel plays mans its feel so epic and the enemy looks really epic and terrifying at the same time
It plays during the final boss fight of the game, there are many many versions of it, and yes they have a full final fantasy 2 hour orchestral performance, its called distant worlds
Another FF7 classic I would suggest is the Jenova boss fight theme! I've seen people react to the original version from the PS1 game first, and then the FF7 Remake boss fight theme, which comes in three parts to match the 3-phase Jenova Dreamweaver fight. It's really neat to see how the classic track was adapted - the drop at the start of the third phase of the fight is EPIC. The Black Mages also did an absolutely incredible rock/electronica version I highly recommend.
For the live performance yes it was called Distance Worlds
Distant Worlds was one of the most incredible experiences I've been to. Highly recommend. This reminds me of The Omen trilogy!
It's a funny coincidence that you're reacting to this now because I often draw parallels between Final fantasy VII and Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood. In both the concept of "The Sefirot" of the kabbalah, and the pathway towards godhood are major themes. I'd even go so far as to say the two stories themes cover the same story archetype.
The live orchestral performance of this song is so awesome, because the conductor usually gets the audience to chant SEPHIROTH during those parts of the song. Literally making the crowd be apart of the performance. Please react to both the Advent Children version and the FF7 remake version of this song called One Winged Angel Rebirth.
You're fighting the final boss in his final form, the One Winged Angel. It was terrifying as a kid but I loved it so much. Oh and in part of the song they are saying please oh please don't let me die
Nobuo Uematsu, composer for this piece and most Final Fantasy games in general, is an absolute genius in his field. This song is played while fighting the final boss, who amongst other things attacks with a supernova that you can see engulfing several other planets. There are videos of this song on YT with the bossfight shown.
I feel that video game music has more of a deeper meaning, emotion, or story than most anime music. And there usually isn't even any words. Also highly recommend, as it is my favorite, Darkness of the Unknown.
This is such a legendary classic song by now. It is such an epic song!
Always happy when someone else finds Final Fantasy’s music 💙
Listening to the Distant Worlds soundtracks are the best way to listen to the Final Fantasy series. This is literally a version of the song being directed by the actual composer for most of the FF music. My wife and I have gotten to see it in person twice and it is so moving. The actual concerts has visuals in the background from the games and is performed by a full orchestra
One-Winged Angel is the theme for the final boss of Final Fantasy VII. It was redone for the movie, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children adding in a rock aspect and also changing the core theme of it. The one for Final Fantasy VII: Remake, One-Winged Angel Rebirth, begins chaotic, reflecting how a core theme is how Sephiroth is trying to change history, then reprises with this as well as some other elements. And you reacted to the original version, released in 1997 for the first Final Fantasy VII game. Nobuo Uematsu composed this piece. He also notes how he was inspired by many classical composers for a number of his pieces. A good one for me to recommend is Dancing Mad. The original one from the SNES, which is in MIDI format, and then a full orchestral version.
Oooooh I was not waiting for this!!! You should react to "The extreme" for Final Fantasy 8, my favorite battle theme
I love this OST So much
Oh man... There's so many FF songs I want to recommend, but so I don't overwhelm you, I have just two others you should definitely listen to (and I always recommend the distant worlds versions if you can) The first is Liberi Fatali from Final Fantasy VIII. It's very epic, similarly to One Winged Angel. The second is To Zanarkand from Final Fantasy X. It's so beautiful and emotional I dare you NOT to feel something when listening to it.
It's the theme to the Final boss fight in Final Fantasy VII this is easily one of my favorite video game OST's of all time you should definitely check out more themes from FFVII
1st heard this 1997-1998 when i played FF7. Until now im 35 and i still grt goosebumps listenting to this.
Others have probably covered everything, but... You should check out the original OST version of it as this is indeed the live orchestra performance from a Distant Worlds concert. Listening to the OST version would give a sense of what they were working with from game capabilities versus what was written (the orchestra version here is what Nobuo Uematsu wrote, then he adapts to the capabilities of the game's sound system). As for what's happening, this is the final boss music, Sephiroth. As others have said, check out Dancing Mad from Final Fantasy VI. Uematsu essentially wrote a full opera performance for a 16 bit game system and made it work with the sound chip available on the SNES. You could get 2 videos (or one LONG one) out of listening to the original SNES version back to back with an orchestrated version (or the FFXIV arrangement as it's orchestrated). A popular comparison is that Dancing Mad is like having the Sistine Chapel completed solely using crayons. There's another channel MarcoMeatballVods who is a trained opera singer that has reacted and analyzed Dancing Mad. Pretty good stuff. He also has videos where he introduces other opera conductors and performers to video game music and they're often blown away by what they're hearing. Dancing Mad is a three part opera piece that plays as the player goes through the different parts of the final boss fight against Kefka - a psychotic jester turned god like deity over the world he's broken (and intends to destroy). The thematic of the fight, and the opera, is mirroring Dante's Divine Comedy. You could also check out the original SNES version of "Opera - Maria and Draco" followed by an orchestrated version. And as you listen to all of these, keep this in mind: Nobuo Uematsu has zero musical training. He was working a retail job when he agreed to go work for Square Enix. His musical talent is entirely natural ability of a musically inclined ear and self taught writing music. Matoya's Cave (NES), Matoya's Cave (Final Fantasy XIV) and Matoya's Cave (Black Mages) are a trio worth listening to for how different approaches can change the tone of the same song so much. The Black Mages are Uematsu's band he created later in his career and their performance of Matoya's Cave is a lot of fun going from the original style to a rock style to a jazz style, slipping in the original NES chiptune, and back into rock.
Boss fight music! One of the most iconic ones I've ever heard.
You should listen to the Zelda Twilight Princess music if you haven't already it's orchestral too and honestly my favorite of the Zelda games soundtracks. Also Stand By Me by Florence and the Machine. It was in the Final Fantasy XV game and it made me cry and fall in love with Florence.
There are so many versions cause it is iconic. The version at the end of final fantasy 7 remake is insane.
My church choir teacher sang this song in a choir at a convention. She had no idea that it came from a video game until my phone went off (this was my ringtone at the time) just before choir practice and I told her it came from Final Fantasy VII
This song is generally considered Sephiroth's(the main villain) theme song even though it wasnt originally. The song says his name over and over again as he is the one winged angel. When he arrives often this song plays.
A bit left-field from this, there is a rapper called Mega Ran who made an entire rap album named Black Materia based on the storyline of FF7, and it's AWESOME. Absolute and Avalanche are by far my two favorites, but it's well worth the time to listen through.
This is orchestral version perform by Distant World. This was firstly perform in PS1 FF7 game, and since then develop into many different version, and Advent Children version is consider the best upgrade to the original piece. The composer Nobuo Uematsu once perform the Advent Children version with Distant World in one of concert at Japan. As this song, this is the last boss battle in original FF7, and thus the epicness. Another FF song/music that highly praised are To Zanarkand (FFX), Dancing Mad (FFVI), Liberi Fatali FF(VIII), Not Alone (FFIX), Battle (or Clash) on the Big Bridge (FFV), Fight with Seymour (FFX), Blinded by Light (FFXIII), Somnus (FFXV), Apocalypsis Noctis (FFXV), and so many more
When this OST kicks in you know, the shit will hit the fan bro, you get goosebumps, you get sweaty hands, and you experience stress mixed with. Sephiroth has arrived with his orchestra.
The Final Fantasy games have always had some of the best music in the industry, being mostly orchestral music. Hell, even the spin-off series have amazing music! Honestly most of the songs in the FF series would be worth reacting to😂 However, my absolute favourite osts are from the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy. Those games have such beautiful themes and musical melodies. I can't remember the names of many songs, but the best one that comes to mind is Lightning Returns OST: "Lightning's Theme ~ Radiance ~". I'd recommend reacting to that.
This is the Final Boss Theme for Sephiroth. His actual character theme was Those Chosen By The Planet, but that's long been overshadowed by One Wingéd Angel. I don't recall if you've done FFVI's Dancing Mad... if you have, then I recommend Chrono Trigger's World Revolution.
Final Fantasy 7 was what got me into classical music. The major songs from the game paint a great portrait of the characters they represent. In this case, the character is fanatical and militaristic, sinister and insane, all while being terrifyingly awe inspiring.
This is the song that plays during the final boss battle of Final Fantasy 7. It wonderfully encapsulates the awe and terror that he inspires in people. It helps that his most powerful attack is that he causes a goddamn supernova. Also, fun fact about the song itself: when Nobuo Uematsu was writing One Winged Angel he didn’t write it from start to finish. He wrote a whole bunch of measures and then stitched them together into this masterpiece.

Even to this day, I'm programmed to enter fight-or-flight as soon as that first note hits. Instant "oh, shit" moment.

@@epicwalrus7183 I am much the same way with the song that plays when you approach Cynthia in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum
Sephiroth is one of the best video game Antagonists ever. You know he's absolutely wild if his theme sings his name.
I noticed you're listening to the Distant Worlds version. It actually is a live orchestra playing the music from the series.
There is a live performance of this floating around somewhere i just can't remember the name of the band atm it's 4am lol
You know it's the final boss battle when your soundcard pauses to load a massive honkin' SoundFont, with high (for 1998) quality orchestral samples. And the bloody choir. With bloody Latin lyrics from bloody Carmina Burana.
you know it's good when the villain's name is repeated in his own theme. Since you reacted to a boss theme, another good boss theme is from FFX; react to "Otherworld". Really good boss theme.
