In late of 1989 a lot of east coast Rappers a bit in the west from 89-92ish many used jazz samples in their beats it was very popular before that James Brown was sample very heavy and of course other genre were sample or remade as well.

Hip Hop music incorporated all sounds from the beginning. Funk and Soul were first then the rest right after. Also Tribe Called Quest were the first to really infuse Jazz. Please go back to their first album in 86. Paid In full, in my opinion is the blueprint in making a real Hip Hop album. Rakim’s family were performers in Jazz and his mother sang both Jazz & Opera and I believe she performed at the Apollo.

This song came out around 1992. It sounds like it was recorded with some live instruments. That was common with some rap back then. With 80s and 90s rap there was more sampling. That's why you heard more instrument sounds in music back then. In today's rap you don't hear much sampling. So you don't hear many instruments in rap nowadays. You get more digital/computer type sounds now. Maybe sampling became too expensive?

I think he got in a beef with KRS-ONE. I don't know how it got started or ended. But I know that LL Cool J and Kool Moe Dee got into a strong beef. I mean he had one of LL's hats under his jeep tire. LL wrote "Mama Said knock you out " and "I'm Bad" as disses to Kool Moe Dee. Just thought I'd drop that on you cuz to get into a riff with Rakim, you gotta be crazy and careful.
