I love Disturbed , great singer.. trained formally . their concerts are hard rock with excellent musicians..arrangements cool, and singing is bad ass.. prefer this Sound of Silence
I'm over 70 years old, so I remember when Simon and Garfunkel released this song. I was not overly optimistic when I heard of this cover. But when I heard it my jaw dropped, they had taken the original and transformed it from a warning to a condemnation!!! It hit hard because it pointed out how my generation had failed to fulfill the dreams we had!!

I have watched hundreds of reactions to this song and it never gets old. David comes from a long line of Jewish Cantors. He was professionally trained to preserve his vocals but on a human note, he is not tattooed out of respect for his heritage, especially his grandfather and removes his piercings when with them. Mad respect to his talent as well as to the man. On the Conan live he actually had to sit. He had just been. Released from the hospital, still had fever and yet. Delivered what was a spectacular performance! Simon said its as much David's as his now. Theirs was a warning....David's is what happens and the anger because the warning wasn't heard...

The original song by Simon and Garfunkel was a warning to people, this version is the result of nobody listening to that warning. This one gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it and I’ve heard it about 100 times. I really love how Disturbed treated this cover and kept it true to the original, so many bands would have turned it into something more akin to the genre they usually do and the song would loose all meaning. Great reaction to a great cover.

@Ryan Critchlow - I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to song remakes... but I recently discovered this one, as well as their cover of Land of Confusion. Both songs were fantastic as originals, but I have to admit, Disturbed took them both to another level. I think your assessment about the original and the cover being "Warning" and "result of ignoring the warning" is spot on. When I saw the video for Land of Confusion, I called my wife into the room, and said, "This is the most 'Pink Floyd's The Wall' video without actually being made by Pink Floyd"... She didn't argue with me about that viewpoint. Honestly, I'm only recently getting into 90s metal, post Grunge. I always loved 80s "hair metal", and the offshoots of it from that time, until the early 90s. I was in my 20s from 1987 until 1997, but the music didn't really connect with me at the time. I don't know why, but it's really hitting me now, in my mid 50s.

I cry everytime. We, The Pepsi Generation, were Duped from Day 1. We failed America. Our children have failed America's forefathers too.
David Draiman (singer here) sang this live on Conan's show (when he was recovering from a virus). Amazing. You're right that this is not the typical Disturbed metal song, but Disturbed's cover is retelling the story that S&G predicted nearly 60 years ago. Their lyrics tell of a society losing touch with one another, but in a softer folk-rock way. Disturbed's Draiman makes clear that their prediction was right and condemns what we've become. It seems more relevant today than it was in the mid-'60s. Our society is much more disconnected today. As someone who bought the original S&G album, I refused to listen to this cover for months. My mistake. Paul Simon himself said he loved Disturbed's cover. Thanks for playing and reacting.

Of course I remember the video. Always enjoyed S & G back in the day but big fan of Rock since the 60s. Current favs are still the FooFighters, Imagine Dragons, Daughtry, and still appreciate Metallica and Pantera. Still a huge Rolling Stones fan. I’ve watched several of Disturbed’s live concerts on YT. I know a lot about lead singer David Draiman, but everything was covered by other comments, but no one mentioned that when this video came out in 2015, Paul Simon reached out to the band and practically said that they now own that song. I saw an interview he did stating exactly that. He said after a show that he can't join in anything after the show with the rest of the band. He doesn't drink or join in the get togethers after the show because after two hours of singing he has to protect his voice and can't be trying to talk over people. He said it was like being a monk. Hearing Disturbed sing this song was also my first introduction to this band. Heard it inside a convenience store. The clerk had it playing. I couldn't get enough of listening to it. It was awesome. I don't usually listen to heavy metal but there was something about this man and this song. It was just awesome.

Paul Simon wrote this song, and Simon & Garfunkle initially recorded it. At the time, it was a commentary on society. David Draiman recorded it as a warning to current society; and how appropriate that was. Paul Simon personally thanked him, and so do I. Thanks for putting it out there again.

This song rendition is pure perfection.
Songs are all about the message they send. In these times of angst, this is how to be heard. I’m a huge S&G fan, I’m 73 yrs of age, & I’m now a major Disturbed fan. There’s no reason folk/message music can’t be screamed in your face and accompanied by tympani! Many’s the time I’ve screamed (for instance) “If I had a hammer.” Us folkies get angry, but Disturbed does it best. New songs are Fierce and wonderful.

David Draiman (singer) is widely considered among best metal vocalists of all time. Yes he puts on a whole show with this kind of sound and energy. They're most popularly requested song is probably "Down with the Sickness" but they have many great tunes. I've read it mused that S&G's version was a campy and fun way to reminding us all that as humans we need to learn to communicate more and not just bury our heads in TV and other such media to caution us against what the world could look like if we don't try to talk to each other. Disturbed's version is anger and despair because we didn't fkn listen!

Okay this is a really good cover of this song. I love, and grew up listening to the Simon and Garfunkel version (60's baby). Paul Simon wrote this song and the lyrics are timeless, and hold true to what is happening in the world today.
If you're interested in another set with a great cover/different vibe - check out the 1994 NIN "Hurt" followed by the 2002 Johnny Cash "Hurt" - Same song - but what the two artist do with it is just cool to see.
“When you get to the final boss in a video game and he starts singing.” Love it! Never would have thought of this comparison but it’s epic. 😃
By the time they realeased this song they have been headline touring rock shows for a decade. With him already being a strong vocalist, he earned the vocal dexterity to record and perform a song like this
I'm an old woman. And, I really like this version of the Sound of Silence! The original is beautiful! Since the song came about when my contemporaries were protesting, this rendition just accentuates it's meaning!
David can sing anything… and he does awesome in his concert’s.. I could listen to him sing all day long ❤❤❤
Just about everyone who reacts to this song is blown away by David's vocals. I watched the Conan performance as well. Even though he wasn't feeling well, it was still awesome. I prefer this version because I think it shows the raw emotion more than the Conan one. IMO Thanks for the reaction!
I first saw Disturbed when they opened for an old all female metal band called Kittie, at Club Soda in Montreal. I would put it around 2001, if memory serves me right. When they came out, they brought the lead singer out in a straight jacket strapped to an inclined stretcher and unbuckled him at the microphone. The presence he has on stage is incredible, and he legit holds his voice the entire way through. I got to meet with them back stage, he is a lot shorter than you would expect but an awesome human being. =) I love seeing people react to this song, it is a journey all unto it's own. If you have not yet, I highly suggest listening to Van Halen's Eruption. There is a live version, make sure to watch that one. It will blow your mind. Cheers!

When I was going through Confirmation, our Pastor played this song by the original band (Simon and Garfunkel) along with a few others, and wanted us to break down the words and meaning. This song is a masterpiece, vocally, musically, visually, emotionally and an epic arrangement and I know nothing about music 😉
I loved this song by Simon and Garfunkel back in the day, I am 67 so I was not prepared for this! But this voice, OMG, gives me chills. God I love this!!! Thank you!!!!
Listening to this beautiful rendition of the Sound of Silence, there's no way you can imagine their original music.
This is my favorite version of this song, but the Pentatonix version is amazing as well. Thanks for the review!
Really enjoyed your reaction - you have a great voice, btw. I get goosebumps every time I listen to this song. As others have already stated, the live version in Conan is well worth the watch. The visual and orchestral arrangements are as stunning as the vocals. For other Disturbed, I also recommend "Down With the Sickness," as I'm sure you're already familiar with the opening bars. And yes, I say either the live version of that one or the official video - the lyric video can be a bit, um, disturbing (snare & cymbal crash in the background!). 🙂❤
Love love love this song. They absolutely nailed it. Even Simon said it is theirs now
I'm of Simon and Garfunkel era as well - this song holds in my heart. When I heard this sung by Disturbed, I have to say David Draiman kept it real. I didn't realize I'd be so smitten by someone else other than Simon and Garfunkel. OMG - the emotion David put into this song was so powerful!
He's vocally able to do most anything. Classically/operatically skilled, he has power beyond imagination. Concerts are perfect beginning to end. If I bark like him once like their normal sound, I can't talk for 2 days, much less sing!
The music video introduced me to this band and now I am a big fan. Check out their Immortalized album. Most of the song on that album are pretty good.
This first time I ever heard of Disturbed was at Ozzfest 2000. Disturbed was there and yes, he sang with that much power the entire show. He is just AMAZING. You should do a reaction to Disturbed "Down with a Sickness". But this version of this song...he makes you realize how missed up this world is with all is technology. We don't communicate with other people anymore.
I just went last week and saw Disturbed for the 3rd time in my life... He's amazing no matter what he sings due to his vocal training, but believe it or not this is one of his most amazing performances that he has done live for years!!!
Fabulous reaction! I love this rendition. To me, the words fit more with this version than the original, but thats just how I hear it. Thanks! ❤

This woulda scared the shit out of everyone back when S&G were pushing to get a start! Song was earth shattering then and again now for new radical thinkers!

Think about it. Visions are for the Future, not usually in the Now of receiving it. Metal brought this style of vocals into being. S & G couldn’t do this to Simons Vision, nobody could sing like this! Nobody modulated their voice to bring the emotions out. This band HEARD the Message! And show how dire it is to HEAR it! Children are smarter when they learn instruments early…music has been removed from the schools. People texting without speaking or listening…etc. Consumerism on billboards, ads, you name it. It was written for NOW!
