Welcome to arguably the biggest musical can of worms in history. I'm actually a little jealous of people discovering him for the first time. Over the course of 30-35 albums over the last 3 decades, the guy has done everything from extreme metal (make sure you check out 'Strapping Young Lad') to ambient and alt-country, and just about everything in between. To hear the juxtaposition of angelic and flesh-ripping vocals, check out the EMG version of 'Kingdom', do the live version of 'Genesis', the 'Retinal Circus' version of 'Grace', and go from there....

When Devin sings, regardless of how many people are there, if you know the one standing next to you or not. WHEN he sings, it's just him and you in that room. Every time I've seen him, I could swear I was alone with him. The man's presence is genuinely that powerful As for a recommendation, universal flame, the closer to this show. Think it was something like 3 hours on stage and he closed with all the energy he started with.

Devin Townsend was discovered by Steve Vai in 1993 and was part of his band for some time. Devin then started the band "Strapping Young Lad." One of the heaviest metal bands ever! He then created various projects including Devin Townsend Band & Devin Townsend Project alongside other projects over the years. Devin is also one of the greatest guitarists ever and no one in metal can growl in pitch and melodically like he does. He's a GODLY musician.

Devin Townsend is the guy singing. He’s had many different projects and a variety of sounds with his music. He used to front the band, Strapping Young Lad back in the day who were very extreme in sound. Devin is actually the inspiration for Pickles from Metalocalypse funny enough. You should check out more Devin Townsend and Strapping Young Lad.

Thanks for checking out Devin, he's a special one... love him to bits. The puppet you pointed out is Ziltoid the Omniscient, which is one of his creations - he made a metal opera concept album with the same name. He was inspired by the Dark Crystal and decided to make his own puppet, took his old dreadlocks he had still in a box from his Strapping Young Lad days, and ducktaped it to his puppet. He is such a creative force, not just a great singer. He composes, plays guitar, bass, does the mixing etc etc. It seems like you were focusing on the band / audience participation - if so, a few ones that you might enjoy are: * Higher! at Plovdiv * Why? Order of Magnitude version Enjoy the ride! EDIT - fixed syntax

He's friggin' amazing, during the worst of the plague he held a live concert from his home which was amazing as well. He's also formerly of a band called Strapping Young Lad, which also had some great music. He's very emotional at times with music, but also really silly making up a character that is an alien invading earth to take our coffee, he goes from really heavy music with screaming, to almost Disney like operatic songs, he'll make songs without any vocals and just melodies, he continues experimenting with sounds, then make silly faces playing things live and make jokes. He'll make weird things like a song about a vampire lady called Vampira, then have an alternate version with out vocals but in the style of a polka song called Vampolka. I basically started following ya because of your VTuber reactions, but I'm glad you've gotten around to Devin Townsend, he's a unique talent that more people need to see.

Love Devin, pissed I haven't seen him live yet! His vocals are insane & full of passion. I love 'The Death of Music' from this show and the story behind it - it's long though, otherwise, Funeral or Bastard are also amazing and in his acoustic performances you can witness his humble , quirky personality he can be so intimate in his performances, the CBC music version of Funeral on YT is stunning. Then you get to see him Live in Plodiv with an orchestra & choir sing 'Higher', less intimate but showcases the unbelievable epicness of some of his work.

Devind Townsend is a very interesting artist. Almost every album of his he has some kind of concept behind it and on top of music arranges side materials for it. Listen closely, don't do a damn thing that anyone who comments recommends about Devin Townsend, (except for me of course) and simply watch (and if you're feeling nice, react) to everything by him that you find and strikes your fancy. There are no bad things, only different things. The commenters will tell you to do the exact same fuxing thing that every other "Devin Townsend reactor" has done and tell you the RULES and sh!t about which things to see, which versions of those things to see, how to feel about them, etc. Ignore them all, please. Watch anything by Devin that strikes your fancy and be amazed. Take care struggler.

Fun fact about Devin: he has Synesthesia....which means that his senses overlap. Musical notes have shapes, colors and textures, literally, for him. Because of this, he doesn't like the vocals to overpower any of the instruments, and his vocals are often lower in the mix.....but it ends up producing a gorgeous wall of sound.

Devin is such a great artist! I got into his music at the beginning of the year. He's of course primarily a progressive metal artist, but has a good amount of variety of other styles in his discography too. Here's a five songs to check out, I've tried to pick a wide array of styles here. Detox (from the Strapping Young Lad album "City") Deep Peace (from the solo album "Terria") Pixillate (from the Devin Townsend Band album "Synchestra") Sumeria (from the Devin Townsend Project album "Deconstruction") The Code (from the Casualties of Cool album "Casualties of Cool") Have fun!!!! He has roughly 28 studio albums, so there's a lot to check out. :)

Technically it's not heavy metal. You'd see a mosh pit in a heavy metal performance. This is closer to Prog rock / Metal, with a musicality that is close to post rock, and that's, let's call it, more mental, more "intelligent" music, music that you need to focus on to absorb it, not music you bang your head to or dance to. Some people would call it "music for old people", and by old let's say 40 and up, and I would not disagree, but it's not a bad thing in my opinion. Sometimes feels like young people believe they invented the idea of liking music.
