Absolutely. A truly unique approach to music.. "Myth Wave" perhaps. Though there are other acts somewhat in the vicinity of DCD, they truly remain iconic and peerless in their art.

definitely do more of DCD , The Host of Seraphim, American Dreaming, Children Of The Sun, Yulunga....the list goes on. Lisa Gerrard is a Phenom, and Brendan Perry is in his own right. The band is so odd, but so very satisfying, like the most primordial soulful and haunting music ever. Lisa has a vocal range that is unbelievable, and she can put you into a trance with her glossolalia...

Congratulations! You may well be the first reactor to have found Dead Can Dance! I was wondering who would be that resonant chamber. Mind you, Lisa Gerrard sings many if not most of DCD's songs, and her voice is of a higher quality than your average singer or artist. She is the voice in "Gladiator" soundtrack. And from all I can ascertain, they do not release any bad songs, or filler. When old prog classics turnt commercial, ears gravitated to this band, among others, as a true progression from the golden age, which concluded around '74. Spin the wheel and land on any of their songs, on any of their albums, and you will find creative vision, and quality music.

Man, you're just hitting all of my favorites as of late! Edit: If you liked the bar "The procession moves on, the shouting is over. The fabulous freaks are leaving town." then you may want to check out the song "The Eternal" by Joy Division, as it's an extension of the first lyrics of that song. I can't help but think that "The Carnival is Over" might be an ode to the band Joy Division in certain ways (the history of the band & the problems they faced until the end, etc.). If you like somber music, it doesn't get much more somber than Joy Division (I'd highly suggest them for you).

Polo! You're really spoiling me! Dead Can Dance are one of my all-time favourite groups. My favourite song by them is from their first album / ep It's called The Arcane....They originally signed to a British independent label called [4AD]. Which was also home to my all-time favourite band Cocteau Twins. The female singer in DCD I'd famed for her exordinary vocal range. But Brendan's voice has a beautiful rich baritone to it. Which is so soothing & warm. This sing has such a rich melancholy to it. Thanks for your reaction it was sweet. 🖤

The meaning of this piece is not that difficult to understand. The carnival here is a symbol of the carefree childhood, the constant fun, the fascination with the magic of the surrounding world, then the strange emotions of adolescence that no one else sees, first love, and the multitude of voices, one of which kept saying that the carnival is over. The video captures very well the awesomeness that ends for everyone when adulthood begins. This is why the theme of passing, of ending, of leaving, is so emphasised in the lyrics and the video.

So, if you were not aware, Polo, this band is a duo, which includes, as the female half, Lisa Gerard. That name may be familiar, as she has been involved in several film scores, especially in the late 90s, and early 2000s.

As much as I love Dead Can Dance, this is far from their best track. "Yulunga" would get my vote, and the whole Spiritchaser album is solid. PS> Their name is in reference to some cultures where an animal is sacrificed in making a musical instrument so that, when it's played, the 'dead can dance again'.

Where did this come from?? Wow, major props Polo for reacting to such an obscure band. For at least two decades I have listened to this song whenever I needed a dose of tranquility. I love Brendan Perry's voice. It's very deep and warm and his used of fry ad very subtle distortion give him such a weathered and wizened sound. Basically he sounds very fatherly. Even if you don't react to any more of their songs, I would recommend checkin out some of their other work, particularly Within the Realm of the Dying Sun. As for the meaning of the song, I always interpreted it as being about the end of childhood and the loss of innocence. Thank you very much for this.

Yess, you absolutely have to check out some of the Dead Can Dance songs that Lisa Gerrard sings. She's otherworldly. Some of her solo or outside of DCD stuff is absolutely transcendent. I recommend "Sacrifice" or "Sanvean" as some widely available examples on here to really see her magic!

I used to gypsy dance at a Renaissance Faire and we used a lot of their melodies. Just to share. A song that means a great deal to me is Cowboys and Angels by George Michael. I was in a car accident in 1982. My face went into the windshield. I am still very self aware of the scars on my face. This song hit me in so many ways, but the line"that scar on your face, that beautiful face of yours" helped me accept the scars. There are other parts of the song that are meaningful too, that line just always jumps out at me. When I'm feeling down, I listen to the song. It's on the Listen Without Prejudice album (1990 or 1991) I'm not 100% sure. The whole album is amazing, but this song gets to my heartstrings. ❤
