    When "Fame" came on EVERYBODY in the Club got on the dance floor. If you didn't have someone to dance with you just blended into the crowd dancing with beat. Good music, great memories!

    The Great David Bowie. One of the few artists of music. Best advice for listening to everything from Bowie, Don't expect anything but greatness. It will be greatness that hits you a blindside every time, EVERY song. The variety of his list is just mind blowing...

    You've opened not just a can of worms with David Bowie, but a vibrant field of green earth, my friend. Please check out his live performance of My Death by Jacques Brel from his 1973 Hammersmith Odeon show and his song Teenage Wildlife. He was arguably the greatest solo artist of all time and has hundreds of fantastic songs. This is his only song like this. Expect to wonder if he was the same person on the next few tracks. Incredible reaction, fam! ❤

    I just heard an interview from the 70's w/John Lennon 'bout how he got involved in this song. Since he lived in NYC, whenever Jagger, Bowie or McCartney or any Brit were in the city, they would come over and hang with him. Bowie said to him 'Hey, I got this good riff, want to come to the studio and check it out?' Lennon said sure. And this song was born that day.

    This song came out in 1975. David wrote it with John Lennon from The Beatles, and Carlos Alomar, who originally created the main riff for Bowie's version of a song called Footstompin'. This song actually wasn't supposed to be on the record. David had completed the Young Americans record before working with John Lennon, and he removed 3 songs from it in the middle of production so he could include this and a cover of Across the Universe. Tony Visconti, one of Bowie's producers for the record, was upset, but it was David's first #1 hit in the US. Everyone involved was ultimately cool with it, and those 3 songs became bonus tracks for the 1991 Rykodisc and EMI remasters of the album.

    @Logan Roselli I feel Who Can I Be Now? should have been on Young Americans instead of Fame. It was supposed to be a soul album, so ending on a funk rock song doesn't sit right with me. Bowie changed the flow entirely. It sounds like it should've been on Station to Station, which could've used a 7th track. It could've also been a non-album single and still sold like hotcakes.

  • @chrismeadows4216

    @chrismeadows4216

    @Logan Roselli Fame was already on the record before anyone had heard it. There was no indication it was going to be a hit. Young Americans was the first single and was released in advance of the album to promote it, but Fame wasn't released as a single until some time after the album came out. David solely put it on because he didn't want to not use John Lennon collaborations. He called Tony Visconti, who thought the album was perfect the way it was, and told him that he's replacing those other songs. It messes with the flow, but he did it anyway. He was out of his mind on cocaine, so I don't think there was much thought put into it.

  • @chrismeadows4216

    @chrismeadows4216

    @Logan Roselli I know Lennon loved it and thought the Let it Be version was awful. He was resentful that Paul rearranged it, and he wanted it more energetic. Bowie's version is one of the few covers that gets the "slither wildly as they slip away" lyric correct. Bowie seemed split on Young Americans as a whole, which is why he performed few of the songs live. He seemed to like the title track, Win, and Fame, but otherwise neglected the record later in his career like with The Man Who Sold the World, Aladdin Sane, and Diamond Dogs. Bowie's standards were higher than a lot of ours.

    Not super well known, but you have two other tremendous musicians featured on this track as well. . .John Lennon, who co-wrote the song with Bowie playing guitar & with the little high pitched “Fame!” backing vocals plus Carlos Alomar, also a co-writer of the song, originally part of James Brown’s backing band. A huge track with legendary musicians featured!

    Merry Christmas. David Bowie was an incredible performer and way ahead of his time. This 1980s British Wave was way to much fun. Billy Idol, Bryan Addams, Men at Work, Boy George, the Clash, and many many others. Music was Transforming as times were changing in Society. Check out a rock band called ELO-Electric Light Orchestra. All Over the World, Livin Large Philly 18 or Don't Bring Me Down. They have a great sound. Theres also the Cars-You might think. Easy sound and really popular. Last suggestion is a band called WhiteSnake- In the Still of the Night. It's an incedible song with a haunting sound to it.

    Fame was one of the first and few songs by a white artist that was played on the black A,M. radio "Soul" stations. Radio stations, like everything else in this country, were a segregated medium. Most often to hear black music in this country you had to find an a.m. "soul" station until about 1975. This is just the tip of the iceberg of David Bowie's library.
