Just a bit of 411 on this. When Marley says “I’m on the Rock…”, he’s talking about Jamaica, which is often referred to as a “Rock” because of it’s topography. It’s the reason why Damian Marley says “Welcome To Jamrock” as the title of his song, Jamrock is Jamaica. There was an attempt on his life, during a time of a lot of political violence and chaos, and he spent a brief time in exile in London, which is why he mentioned having to “run like a fugitive, to save the life I live”. The beauty of reggae music is an artist can be talking about suffering and difficulties in life and express it in the most beautiful and uplifting way. I believe that his Iron, Lion Zion referred to his return to Jamaica with resilience. I remember when this song was released in the early 90s like a newly discovered gem. Everybody was happy because it really did feel like Marley had returned in some small way. The tone of the song is utterly triumphant. Peace.

This was an incomplete Bob Marley track, which was originally written by the reggae legend in 1973 or 74. Ten years after Marley's death, it was completed and released. According to Mojo magazine, Island Records' Trevor Wyatt only discovered Marley's original song by chance, when he left a rehearsal cassette running while he was pouring himself a glass of water. The song's lyrics concern Marley's Rastafarian beliefs, coupled with an anti-violence message. Zion is "the promised land," which for Rastafarians is the African country of Ethiopia. The lion refers to the Lion of Judah, which appears on the Ethiopian flag and represents Haile Selassie I, the former Ethiopian emperor that Rastas regard as their Messiah.

It was most likely written in 1974 as that is the year the I-Threes Joined the band, or it was written before that and they added the vocals later on, and the extra instruments that may or may not have been there in the unfinished version.

Zion is "the promised land", in the song referring to Ethiopia. The lion refers to the Lion of Judah, which appeared on the old royal Ethiopian flag, and represents Haile Selassie, the former Ethiopian emperor whom Rastafarians regard as their Messiah. The iron means being strong .

Before I would play a game of Rugby whether it was for my club or province, this was what hyped me up before the game. This would always be playing in my earphones while I was warming up. I would always envision myself being as strong as Iron, intimidating as a Lion while running towards the promised land of Zion (Finals) 😂 Krak-up. As far as the meaning of the song goes, it is spiritually deep and was one of those Bob songs that was open to interpretation and whatever you thought it meant for you, is what it would be. Awesome reaction asia and BJ ❤

Awesome video you too and great song choice. I love me some Marley. I believe Bob is talking about his own life. He once got shot up in his own home in Jamaica during a revolutionary War. He actually performed a concert in Jamaica to unite both parties. I believe that's why he is saying "he's on the run" ... like getting out of town, or laying low? On a side note, check out Damian Marley songs. Everybody What's To Be Somebody, Speak Life, Slave Mill, and Caution ⚠️ just to name a few.

I can't lie listening to this really make me want to book a flight back home to Barbados because NY is way too hot & humid right now lol and "Iron Lion Zion" represents the 12 tribes of Judah the conquering lion and Rastas are the true children of Israel so dreadlocks are not just a hair style it represents that and Judaism of Ethiopia where that faith originated.

This is Gospel Music. Iron Lion Zion is a very Spiritual thing. Bob is trying to introduce us to The Messiah through music. Bob is always talking about The Conquering Lion for the Tribe of Judah, which is Yeshua (Jesus). Bob was always talking about the Book of Revelation, which was dictated to the Apostle John by The Messiah. Bob was considered by many to be a Prophet and/or a messenger, and used his music as his weapon. "One good thing about music is when it hits you feel no pain."

Marley tried to stay out of politics but after calling for a stop to the political violence in late 1970s in Jamaica he was seen to have made a political stance , no doubt he was seen as potential unifying force that could not be tolerated by a corrupt and crime ridden system where drug cartels owned politicians the police and gang war fair was rife . Just like MLK Marley was seen as a unifying threat by a corrupt system .
