Such a great R&B soul singer songwriter from the 60's-80's. "Ain't No Sunshine" & "Lean On Me" are his 2 most famous songs but he had some other hits such as "Grandma's Hands", "Use Me", "Lovely Day", "Just The Two Of Us" etc. Sadly we lost him recently in 2020.

Shon, do you have any formal training in music? I’m asking because, I watch a lot of reaction videos, and your understanding, appreciation, and breakdown of these songs, surpasses ALL others by FAR! And, the fact that you do it all with such charisma, and joy, REALLY sets you apart from the others! God Bless You my friend…

Well said and you couldn't be any more accurate. I think he's learned a lot just from having such an open mind to all genres of music. He's done a lot of videos and I've seen the growth for sure. That's one of the joys of watching Shon. He's like a sponge for music knowledge. It's great to see.

Bill was the real deal. He was a blue collar steel worker, and you can hear the depth and grit of experience in his music. He's got alot of recognizable hits too. He was an obstinate man who refused to compromise his music for the corporate execs, and his stuff stands the test of time. Appreciate his music more and more as I get older.

I grew up listening to Bill Withers, he was one of my mother's favorite artists. He has the cleanest tone to his vocals and yet you can still hear that raspy soulfulness in his delivery as well...this is ear candy, bro. (👂🍬) Here's another suggestion, if interested. *"Bill Withers - Just The Two Of Us" (by the channel: Bill Withers)* And you are correct this is the same artist that sang "Lean on Me" that was very astute of you. I always enjoy your reactions and commentary, Shon. Thanks for sharing.

Fun fact: that repeated "I know I know" section was only intended to be a "placeholder" until he'd written some words for that middle 8, but when he first played the demo, the producer liked it and suggested he leave it as was. What a perfect little song it is, just two minutes in the studio take. If you ever get a chance, I urge you to watch Still Bill, a documentary that came out towards the end of his life, maybe about ten years ago. It's lovingly made, and he comes across as the most beautiful human being, one many of us would love to have been our father or grandfather. And I'll mention one other song, to go with the many excellent suggestions others have made: You Just Can't Smile It Away, from one of his later albums. Such a great songwriter.

Essential Bill Withers: The Live at Carnegie Hall concert, though it's audio only, is still one of the greatest albums in history: "Grandma's Hands," "Hope She'll Be Happier," "Use Me," and "I Can't Write Left-Handed." Long tracks with him speaking and audience interaction. He IS "country," by the way, from West Virginia. Grew up in the church and brings that gospel sound into "secular" music. You're right, the way he "pronounces" his words and his riffs are totally unique and soul-stealing.

He was a fantastic singer. Imagine if you were a young teenager in 1971 when this song came out: It came on the radio several times a day and we'd all stop & sing along. Times were tough in America in many ways, but our rock, pop and soul music was the best. Ever.

How to explain it - the video you reacted to is the second identical one posted on KZread. I forget why the first one was removed, but it had many millions of votes and a cult following for the comments, many of which were as entertaining as the song - I can't repeat any word for word, but the references to the drummer being high as a kite and possibly knowing where 'she' had gone, were hilarious and developed a life of their own. When this video was reposted there were many references to the original version, but through time they have slipped from view, and newcomers will be unaware of the story.

This song “Ain’t No Sunshine” was originally written and recorded by Charles Manson during the late summer of 1968 at the Brother Records studio at Brian Wilson’s home in Hollywood CA. So if you’re wondering if this song was STOLEN from Charles Manson, you would therefore be 100% correct. And, by the way, a lot of other popular songs were STOLEN from Manson. But, “THEY” will never ever disclose that little tidbit of TRUTH.
