This song has always been "from chaos to order" in my opinion. It starts off chaotic and without much order, and then settles into a beauty you just didn't see coming. I picture the birth of the universe.

This is my favorite off of Ummagumma live. I knew this version before the original... I was rather disappointed when I got to hear the original, since the epicness of the last section was missing. Not that it was bad in the original, but here they managed to provide a whole different feel. The middle drum section is also a lot more appealing to me in this version. Ready for some weird shit on wednesday?

I might be in the minority here, but neither the studio, "Ummagumma", or Pompeii versions are my favorite. I've heard some live bootlegs where Rick has crazy echo sound effects going on with his keyboard, and David gets even more intense with the guitar playing. "Rolf's Pepperland Bomb" is one bootleg I recall where it really stood out to me. 20 minutes long, and much better sound quality than here, too. I'm guessing Rick's new keyboard was introduced in 1970, which is when the performance is from. And I always felt this track was weak on the guitar during that middle section, but man, David really kicked it up in one of the versions I heard. Nick Mason also locks into a groove and gets progressively faster during the performance. The reason people love the Pompeii version so much is due it being a video, but during the middle section, Rick plays random piano chords just like the studio version, and David does some minimal guitar noise that can barely be heard in the mixing, so it's not what I'd call definitive without the visual element. I do love all of them for different reasons, though. By the way, you'll be interested to know that the studio side of the album is full of solo pieces by each band member, and the first one "Sysyphus" is completely a solo piece by Rick Wright!

@@donlebo6824 Can is a good suggestion. Granted how Andy has taken like a fish to water to the way Floyd's longer pieces are structured into phases or movements, and that he appreciates Nick Mason's contribution in regulating the transitions, maybe it's time for him to compare and contrast Jaki Liebezeit's role in Can's complex compositions. Though it's a long piece (at nearly 20 minutes) to choose as your first taste of a band, I'd suggest that he might find Bel Air from the Future Days album an immersive ride.

I remember as a kid looking at the Ummagumma album at the record store, thinking about buying it when I was about 10 or 11 years old. I didn't know any of the songs at the time. Instead I bought Surrealistic Pillow by Jefferson Airplane and the first Buffalo Springfield album. Ummagumma would have been a little weird for me at that time. A few years later and I was jamming to Yessongs.

I'm probably one of the few who actually like the studio version a bit more. That said, I still think this version is fantastic and a great way to complete the live part of "Ummagumma". I feel the studio version is more ethereal, maybe artistic and takes you on a further journey (and those angelic voices are truly awesome). I suspect the fact that live version is so much more energetic gives it broader appeal which is quite understandable. My Pink Floyd collection would be incomplete without both versions.

Seeing that we are educating you here is 2 bands we need to talk to you about. One RORY Gallagher, an Irish guitarist who was possibly the best guitarist in the world, try any of these 3 albums for starters , Live in Europe, Irish tour and stage struck, all 3 are live, Gallagher was phenomenal live, out of these 3 albums 'Moonchild ' on stage struck would be my favourite by a country mile, his solo is just mind blowing. His live performances are legionary and was more a live artist than a studio one, the studio sound does not live up to his live work.. Although now deceased and buried in Cork Eire His music is still alive with numerous tribute bands playing his music live all over europe. Try this u-yube link to a Rory performance of moonchild kzread.info/dash/bejne/ma182896qLi8osY.html 2nd 'Santana'; Where do we start with Santana? Look up their break through performance at Woodstock ( 1969) volume 3 (Their 3rd album was known as Volume 3) track 3 remains possibly one of their best tracks in my humble opinion, they have to be up there with Floyd without any doubts but a total different sound, lets see what the opinion is amongst your followers here is regards ian derby UK

Am I the only person to appreciate this album. Such a great album it’s much better than more and the albums after the final cut, those albums just sucked. First, they just have that horrible production to them second, this is also invoked with the production but I feel the reverb was unnecessary, third it was just weak albums no song on there except high hopes grabbed my attention. The more albums great too but I feel that the instrumental songs destroyed the album from being a really great album. In conclusion I fell this albums a masterpiece that should be appreciated more than it should be underrated as fuck.
