    Metallica literally saved my life with this song. I listened to this track multiple times a day for weeks to give me the strength I needed to beat my meth addiction. As of writing this comment, I am 13 months and 10 days clean, holding a job, and working on buying my first house. I'm me again. I can only imagine where I'd be if I hadn't discovered this track and gotten the metaphorical kick in the balls it gave me. As cliché as this comment may be, seriously, if you're reading this and you are struggling in a similar way I was, it's not too late. You are so much stronger than you think. The Master is only the master until you tell him to fuck off.

I hated the Beatles, loved the Stones, and Zeppelin. Then in 1978 I was blown away by Eddie Van Halen and got a taste for metal guitar. The song structure fallows the addict's circle of death. The longing for the drug, then you take the drug and the euphoria comes and the reprise from the craving. Then the come down, and the craving comes back with a vengeance and the circle repeats.

    Think of this one as three parts, the need at the beginning and the struggle to find it, the middle (slow down) is where you got it and the tranquility takes over, the it moves to the RAGE of being left with nothing when you come down and the struggle begins again. P.S. If you pause (and we know u got to) go back a few so you can stay in the "Groove" or "Context" of the lyrics/music. Metal tells a story with the lyrics and the music. TY guys 4 the reaction!

    Right. I think the melodic, acoustic guitar part is lost on some people - or the meaning of it. That's the hit, the beautiful, drift away feeling that drugs give you. People forget, drugs feel great, it is a beautiful feeling. And then that part slowly builds in intensity and power and, as you rightly say, anger, of coming back to the shitty reality that you took the drugs to escape from in the first place. It's a journey, with the drug high being described simply in music, no lyrics. Because only music can ever start to capture the ecstasy of that initial hit. Then words come back when the drugs wear off and you are back at square one again. And so it goes. Personally, I've never touched opiates. I'm saving that for my old age. A few months of bliss and then I'll check out, when I'm good and ready. I have no family, I will be alone and this is my plan :)

    Hit the nail on the head. The melodic solo and slow down is the euphoria after having given in an obeyed your master. Then as it wears off, all you have is anger and regret for all you did to struggle at the start to get your fix. Its a moment of clarity, filled with anger and regret, which innevitably will give in to the struggle to repeat the cycle again.

    I once lived in the shed in the front yard of my drug dealer. One morning I watched the yard birds (drug addicts with no game) arrive for their daily handout and I decided i didn't want to live that way. I left. I basically went to war; with myself. My drug me wanted to do one thing, I wanted to do something else. Good Lord what a fight and I did it on my own.... took me 3 years to kick all of drugs ass, but I got it done.... That was 1998. if people don't want to change, no amount of drug rehab is going to help them. If they DO want to change, then they have to go to war and not give up the fight.....

    That was inspiring. I got divorced and lost my job last year.. I lived in a friend's camper until I was noticed (illegal within city limits). Lived in my car, finally found a tiny place to rent. I've been drinking like a fish. I can't stand being sober. Depression, self loathing.. I've intentionally pissed off my friends so they don't bother me anymore. My family in Florida is begging me to just pack up and come back, but I've been hiding my alcoholism from them and I'm burning thru my savings like dry leaves.. I just keep waking up in the afternoon and think - I'll just do this one more day and then stop tomorrow. It's been a few hundred 'one more day' talks in the mirror at this point. Thanks for your message. I'm going to keep re-reading it...👍

It really does take away everything good in your life, and the more you lose the less will you have to pull yourself out of the pit. Seen a few people react to this song, one of the true greats of metal, and it usually takes until “chop your breakfast on a mirror” to realize what it’s about. You guys picked up on it real quick, I’m glad to know it still works so well in that way. James Hetfield, the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of Metallica, has struggled with addiction and has often said that music is his therapy. He sings his demons out while Kirk Hammet plays lead guitar with those face melting solos. Others have said it, but the three parts of this song go from the driving need for the addiction, the euphoria of riding the high with that melodic guitar break in the middle, and the plunge back into being controlled with the third verse to the end of the song. Plus, fun to shout along to MASTER over and over again. Hope you listen to some others, “Fade to Black” is a favorite as well as “Sad But True,” “One,” “Bleeding Me,” it goes on and on…

    Hard to really compare guitarists from other genres or eras. There are some country boys nd gunk players that deserve to be in the convo. Chet Atkins is definitely one of, if not the greatest guitar player(s) ever. Classical (orchestra guitarists) guys too, that just don't ever get considered. Fender did a video of guitarists playing a metal-esque cover of the GoT theme with Tom Morello, Nuno Bettencourt, Scott Ian, Dan Weis, Ramin Djiwadi (the song's composer) and Brad Paisley. The face Nuno makes during Paisley's solo is priceless lol

    Wow you guys had fantastic insights into this song, I’ve actually never connected the drug aspect and I’m almost positive you’re correct in the hypothesis that they saw many drug-fueled situations that inspired the song. They’ve said in interviews that they chose to stay away from all the hard drugs and instead focus mainly on alcohol, choosing to be a band that drinks vs a band that gets loaded on substances.

    There's a running joke in the fast-rap genre that sometimes you just have to pause the song to let the man breathe. 😂 I just love that this classic remains timeless and that we get to share this together. Important message and musical genius. Kirk has played that solo a billion times. He's earned a break once in a while. Lol

  • @njldst2007

    @njldst2007

    3 жыл бұрын

    @Colt Man Then with all due respect, you're a 'guitar player' who doesn't really feel the intricacies of the solos (note the choice of the verb I used is feel and not understand) and also someone who hasn't seen enough reactions of non-musicians who have absolutely been won over by nothing but the guitar solos. You can break down a guitar solo to it's basic parts when you study it theoretically by looking at it in various ways, scales and techniques used being 2 very commonly used ones, but that's just ways to *study* the solo. Once a solo happens, if you can't feel the storytelling happening then it doesn't matter how well you understand the science of it, you ain't feeling it. For someone who does feel the music, pausing a guitar solo is akin to stopping mid-sex before orgasm is achieved, or if you want a more PG way of saying it, listening to a monologue or emotional speech being given only for it to be cut in the middle before the point is truly made. Some of the most emotive and emotional music on guitar is Blues music and most Blues guitarists use the same exact scales and same exact techniques, but can paint entirely different pictures with them. If you don't get it, then fine, you're a theory based guitarist, and there's nothing wrong with that. But don't go around claiming that your opinion is the right way by virtue of you being a guitar player who understands scales and techniques because that is not the be all and end all of guitar playing by far. I could easily argue that in their first 4-5 albums, almost every solo Kirk played was unique in it's construction and implementation within the song, even though by certain parameters your assessment of them being 'samey' is also true. It's art, it's interpreted by the listener in different ways, but the key thing is, art should be interpreted after you get the full picture, or the complete dosage, and not halfway through or in broken fragments if you really want to understand it. Lyrics can be, as that's literature, but that's why musical genres that are music based, like most rock and metal music, have such a strong focus on the instrumentation as part of telling the story. As opposed to other genres of music which are lyrics based like most Country and Rap music

    Ahhh...mid-80's Metallica. There is nothing else like it and Master of Puppets is iconic among thrash metal albums, if not the best ever. What is even more amazing is that they wrote it when they were only in their early 20's. Kirk once said that the group was "just making another album" at the time and "had no idea that the record would have such a range of influence that it went on to have". R.I.P. Cliff

Why did it take over 20 years for people to realize that Metal/Rock music is not "devil music"? It was just a different tempo of playing....music is the real language. I grew up in a very religious family and began playing electric guitar as a teen. My background on music is blues, folk, country, classical and gospel. I ended up playing Rock/Metal music. I am proud of you both. Cachai :)
