Its about the band sitting around at 25 or maybe 26 minutes until 4 in the morning, trying to figure out one last song to put on the album and not being able to come up with anything. Its a true story. They ended up writing the song about trying to write the song.

Make Me Smile, Beginnings, Feeling Stronger Everyday, I'm A Man, Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is, Colour My World, Saturday in the Park, Call on Me, Wishing You Were Here. Searching So Long, So So many more. Terry Kath (RIP) on guitar. Peter Cetera Vocals and Bass. 25 or 6 to 4 references the time. 25 or 26 minutes to 4am. After an all night music writing session. Chicago is a great rabbit hole you will love going down. You can do a whole stream on them and still won't come close to getting through their catalog. P.S. Chicago was at its best when the late great Terry Kath was still alive and playing lead guitar. In my opinion, that never quite sounded as good after his tragic passing. He was known as one of the great guitarists. Their live version of this song at Tanglewood is worth a watch to see the whole band in action, but with Terry on a great solo.

Terry Kath, one of Jimi Hendrix's favorite guitarists, really cut loose in the Tanglewood live version. You should watch it also.

Chicago is a musical explosion of talent.

This song is an absolute master class in composition and arrangement. Not too bad since it is literally a song about writers block at 3:35 am.

It's like the movie Adaptation, where Charlie Kaufman is given an unadaptable book, so instead of writing a movie about the book, he writes a movie about himself, trying to turn the book into a movie. When people turn the world inside out like that it's some kind of next-level meta genius. Speaking of that kind of genius--I've also always loved how Chicago worked the Bass and Treble Clefs into their logo.

I'm so happy that now later in life I've learned and realize that this song is NOT about what I always thought and presumed it was about.... frustrations over having writer's block makes so much more sense. I used to think it was about the guy teaching himself a hard lesson in what NOT to do after staying up all night into the wee hours railing line after line of coke and the inevitable regret that surely accompanies that decision...... so glad I was wrong. TBH, I used to think that just based on the one passage " should I try to do some more..." for some reason my mind just jumped to cocaine use...lol.

This was written while the band was in a marathon writing/recording session, trying to finish the last few songs on their album. It was early in the morning, and they had hit a wall and were struggling to come up with something. They were sitting cross legged on the floor, and a stand still, when someone shouted to the janitor asking what time it was, to which the janitor responded “ it’s twenty five, or six, to four”. They chuckled at his response and before long they started working out a song, and this was the result.

Talking about staying up writing songs…getting very late (or early in the morning) close to 4:00 am. Meaning 25 minutes or 26 minutes until 4:00 am.

In the Terry Kath documentary, his widow implied that it had to do with drugs especially with the line "Should I do some more".

They do this just as well live. Check out the live at Tanglewood version; well worth it just to see Terry Kath perform that guitar solo. RIP Terry!

This was written by Chicago's keyboard player (and one of three lead vocalists in their founding years) Robert Lamm. He was writing a song about writing a song at 25 minutes or 26 minutes to 4 AM. Sitting cross-legged on the floor, looking outside the window of the rented home he was living in, seeing the flashing lights of the city off in the distance (all seven band members relocated from Chicago to California before their debut album as "Chicago Transit Authority"). To really go down the rabbit hole of Chicago, go to their debut album, a double LP. The opening track "Introduction" was written and sung by founding guitarist Terry Kath (dubbed by bandmates as "the white Ray Charles" for his soulful baritone voice) and literally introduces the listener to their brand new sound, asking the listener to sit back and give them a chance to play. On that album is "Poem 58" which opens with 4 and a half minutes of PURE FUNK led by Kath on guitar. When Jimi Hendrix saw them playing at the Whisky a Go Go, he went to their dressing room between sets and told them, "you guys have a horn section that sounds like one set of lungs, and a guitar player that's BETTER THAN ME! You wanna go on the road?" And that's how Chicago Transit Authority became Jimi's opening act at arenas. Do a reaction to "Poem 58" please and you will hear that funk and R&B influence in their music. Drummer Danny Seraphine lays down the beat and was praised by famed drummer Buddy Rich as someone that impressed Buddy.

Back in the days when we used clocks with hands that pointed to the time, we often read them approximately, like 25 or 26 to 4 a.m., like when a songwriter might be sitting cross-legged on the floor, searching for something to say in a song, and waiting for the break of day, which, at 25 or 6 to 4, presumably was still some time away. Great song! And loved your reaction! You nailed it with your comment on the great musicianship. That's Chicago.

Chicago! Best band ever! They did evolve after the death of “their soul” Terry Kath. But if a band knew how to “read the room” it’s definitely Chicago. Their 80’a stuff was mostly ballads, but they were damn good as well, and cemented their legend.

When this came out I got lost in the music too. I would listen to this in my room with the lights out (at night) and my headphones on. This song is Rock, Jazz...Wow!!!

In an interview some Chicago members stated that they were in a jam session and writing music deep into the night, and they were exhausted. One of the members looks at the clock and says, it's 25 or 6 to 4. It didn't make sense, but because he was so exhausted it just came out that way, and they decided to put it in the song.

Their ex-lead singer, Peter Cetera (left the band in '85), had a great solo career!!! He wrote Chicago's first number one hit, "If You Leave Me Now"

A GREAT BAND. I was in a band in high School that had horns and played and loved Chicago and Blood Sweat and Tears and others

Bands like Chicago, Earth,Wind,and Fire etc….that use multiple instruments. I’m always down for.

The very 1st trumpet /horn driven song I learned to play in 1972/73 by ear listening to the Chicago live shows at Carnegie Hall release. Those were some fun times

Great Live version on KZread-- from 67 or 68...??

They had a full band, and so much complexity. One of the best eras of music because everyone on that stage had incredible talent. And live performances; freakin redonkulous. No autotune, no fluff, just talent.

When I was in H.S. our pep band played this when the team came out and started warmups. It got the crowd pumped!

I have seen Chicago probably a dozen times in my 58 years and they have NEVER disappointed! Great horn section always! My only regret is I never got to experience the great Terry Kath, sadly he passed away before I could get to hear him live.

I was lucky too. I saw them at the Chicago Stadium with Terry Kath in the early 70's. I can't remember exactly what year it was. But then I saw them again in I think was '92 at Poplar Creek with the Moody Blues. Great show but it was a different Chicago.

Chicago played here in Asheville, NC in August of 2019. I went to the concert and loved it! They sounded the same on that day as they did back in 1970.

CHICAGO was epic!!! I honestly never met anyone who didn't like their music!!! One of my top ten fav bands from my childhood!!!

I saw them in concert in Atlanta with REO Speedwagon a couple of years ago. They are so good in concert. The horns and all the instruments are simply amazing. Their songs are a masterpiece ❤️❤️🎹🎹

I always know when Asia is really into what she’s hearing. She’ll laugh and say, “they don’t even go here ya’ll.” Check out their ZZ Top Livestream from a few weeks back. Asia, taking you back to high school is absolutely right. My high school's small band played this song during warmups for basketball rivalry games. Would pump up the crowd. This was in the early 70's.

I’m 66. I was a older teen when this came out. I saw them live at Summerfest 1970 in Milwaukee. It was an awesome time in music.

The song is about writing lyrics and fighting through writer's block. 25 or 6 to 4 refers to the time of day. As in 3:34 or 3:35 in the morning and he is trying to finish the lyrics before he goes to sleep.

In the 70s, our high school band played this song at halftime of every home game.25 or 26 to four in the morning, the song is about staying up all night writing a song.

This was the opening song they played at the first Rock Concert I experienced! ... And because I was a 17 year old Kid working on the Allentown Fairgrounds Stage Crew I got to be in the wings for the whole show!

it's funny you mentioned high school band because when I was in high school (93-97) the pep band before basketball games would play this. I was in the pep band my junior year (drums). This was always so much fun to play and visiting teams that would come in (especially from like Chicago or the St. Louis area) would hear us play and it would be a riot to see them dancing along

“25 or 6 to 4” means the time of day- “25 or 26 minutes before 4:00 am”. I know, no one EVER says the time like that, you would say 3:35 or 3:34 am, but it was hard to write lyrics around that! 😆😆

It sucked they had to fire him. So high that he couldn't play along with a click track. He was one of the most creative drummers ever. He kept his drums flat. Not sure why, but it was different. I love to listen to his isolated tracks to revel in his creativity. He was very much like Ringo in that sense.

Saw Chicago and Earth Wind & Fire on a double bill concert and it was unbelievable. Both bands kicked ass and did a encore together for a few songs . It was spectacular

There are many great songs from Chicago. They started out with the heavy metal edge that you just heard then as time went by they moved toward power ballads.

An ode to middle of the night writer's block. lol! Having trouble....glancing at the clock....oh, man, it's about 25 or 26 minutes 'til 4?? Should I keep struggling through here or get a few winks of sleep?

You know Im surprised to hear you say this had a James Bond kind of vibe because Im surprised they were not asked to do an song for James Bond they have that horn section and style that is very James Bond music but then again maybe they were asked and decided not to lol! Great reaction I have seen them in concert and they sound the same so much more awesome songs to choose from you will love the musical journey they take you through!!

love the mix of instruments. The arrangements were amazing.

Chicago's music is deceptively sophisticated-- 7 piece band with 3 horns that rock, a guitar virtuoso with one of the best voices in any genre of music, a keyboard player who wrote hit after hit and had a voice that blended and played off of the bass players most distinctive voice in music to this day. The drummer was outstandingly perfect - despite what you'll hear otherwise from "experts". They were a band of brothers above all and it comes through when you get to really know them. Start with the Live Tanglewood, then watch Live Arie Crown, then checkout their 1st CTA album....their cover of "I'm a Man" is so great...jump to Dialogue, Make Me Smile, Beginnings and then let Terry break your heart on Colour My World...🌟

One of the best bands...ever! Great choice to begin with. Incredible discography. Wow, were they ever talented. I saw them live in 1970. Terry Kath (RIP) was one of the greatest rock guitar players. Ever.
