First Things to Teach Your Puppy - COME and DOWN
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
The first things to teach your puppy will be the most important. There's a specific sequence and series of commands I teach puppies. I ALWAYS teach DOWN before SIT and I always teach a puppy to come to me when called. This is also how I teach the puppy his or her name.

In this short video lesson I cover the basics to getting the puppy to engage to you, COME through motivation and the proper way to shape the DOWN command. Max was not the easiest puppy to get to understand the DOWN, so you may pick up some trick in this video to help teach the down to a dog that might not get it right away.
Let me know your thoughts on how this helps you with your puppy below!

I’m getting a border collie puppy in a month, and I’m so freaking excited and watching all of your training videos
I love the fact that your are using an Akita as a puppy for training and have a series of them..this is great to see the progress and how the puppy is evolved through training. Also, this should help me with my soon to arrive Akita puppy. Thank you, Robert
I love these videos. After going through a couple of local training courses, and watching these videos, there seems to be very similar techniques provided. I have come to the conclusion that they seem to ratio out to about 60% owner training, 40% animal training. That is a good thing.
Awesome, It's my understanding that down is submissive and not always easy to teach. Our female took to it easier then our male. With this method our Zeus is getting it at 3 1/2 months. We are members and love your balanced approach.
Such a good demonstration!Thanks.
So well explained! Love how well you client did his verbals. Perfect
This owner is really listening. Great job as always Robert. Thank you : ) Full lesson is full of key points on your web site , brilliant.
Valuable info, beautiful Akita.
Perfect! The very thing I asked for on the puppy forum last week. Immediate response from you admin💪🏼
Great timing Mr Cabral! I got a Portuguese water dog puppy last week and he is very resistant to the down. I think the gentle shoulder push is just what I need. Thanks!
Your videos and instructions are sooo good and helpful
Max is ADORABLE !!!!

@@RobertCabralDogs thanks for the reply Sir..
My yorkie puppy loves the down command now whenever I say sit she immediately goes to a down and I have to repeat sit and wait until she sits because that used to be her best command so I know that she's aware what it means😂
Is that a prong collar? Would a slip lead work just as well?
Hi, I am getting a puppy and one of the things I don’t want is an aggressive dog! I rescued a dog 14 years ago and he was aggressive. The behaviourist said they didn’t think he knew doggy Etiquette and had missed out of vital socialisation. Socialisation puppy classes don’t seem to be happening due to covid so is there any advice you can give me to ensure my puppy is well socialised please? Thanks
That's one big puppy
great lesson. what breed of dog is this?

Akita
This is a big puppy. Can we get a video with a younger dog and the strategies involved? Maybe this was covered in an earlier video?

This will be a series.
😀
How would you teach a dog his name Robert.
Robert didn't explain why he trains Down before Sit. I've trained all the dogs I've had as an adult by teaching Sit first. The Down cue then seems to come more easily to the dog, without having to assist. But that's just me. If there's a rationale for teaching Down first, it would be nice to know what that would be. Anyone?

I read somewhere once that by having your dog look outside the box on simpler asks they begin to do it naturally ? This could be the reason, I could also be wrong!

The down from a stand is a proper down, if down is taught from a sit it’s improper, also in the future when you tell your dog down he will sit and then lay down . This method is an instant down from a stand

@@xpudsygaminxdiverse1910 -- I imagine by 'proper down' you're referring to formal obedience performance. Thanks for the explanation. At age 71 I've taught all six of the dogs I've had over the years (poodle, Keeshond, Shiba Inu and 3 Pomeranians) using the Sit first technique. None of them, once they learned to Down, ever sat first before lying down when I gave them the cue. I guessed that's what caused my confusion with Robert's technique. I never did competitive obedience with any of my dogs. I was just happy they would learn Sit, Down, Stay and Come. ☺️🐕🐾
Do you think an older dog would help teach this command?
What breed is he? I've got a pit bull/husky mix ❤
Is max a gsd? Or Akita
