First they love you, then they hate you: World title secrets with Mick Fanning and John Florence.

Спорт

After two decades in the game, there are a few commonalities you can always rely on when dealing with a-grade talent: the first is that you need to be prepared to do plenty of waiting.
Once a time and day were set for the interview, both surfers committed to a firm time date: 8am Tuesday in Australia and 12pm, in Hawaii.
It was 7.53am and my laptop wouldn’t kick over. Frozen. A few resets and it whirred to life. It was 7.57am when I finally tuned into Zoom. There, both Mick and John were in full swing. I’m not sure what was more disarming, that these guys were so punctual or the fact that they’d already dived into the joys of cycling, and the fact that John needs to embrace lycra because it’s a “game-changer.”
The goal of this call was simple: two see what can be distilled when two surfing world champs riff about life at the top. This is our second iteration of the series. We had some feedback from the first episode with Ronnie Blakey and it was that we lacked a clear explanation of what was actually going on.
Just to be clear, my role in this is a co-host who plays moderator. When you have two world-class talents going at it, the last thing you need is a third gypsy swinging in with their opinion. However, left alone, two pro surfers could spend 60 minutes wandering aimlessly around subjects like injury rehab or their favourite surgeons in the world. Which, is to not discount those subjects specifically but they can get kinda dreary. My role is to shepherd and push the conversation away from the instinctual and well-worn cliches.
From the first question, Mick was a lot more comfortable with playing host and firing questions. John, who is usually more guarded was loosened up and ready to learn from Mick.
It was a fun exchange. We never expected to hear so much about Gabe Medina, nor had any idea that the emotionless John was a learned skill and that surfing Pipeline is easier with an injury than Snapper.

This was entertaining. Can we get a vid on Mick Fanning what he does on an average day, or when he's not surfing re workouts, entertainment, food he eats, cheat day etc. Similar to the vid Filipe Tols just put out. That would be sick, thanks.

Both phenoms. Mick, so humble. One of smoothest styles out there, right after Jon Jon - idk, maybe even smoother. Watching JJ charge at the Eddie was sick - scared me just to watch. And 2 of the best rail surfers out there. Both learned a thing or 2 from Curren for sure.

I talked a younger surfer out of a sailing trip yesterday, simply death waiting to happen. The "captain" had no itinerary and no real deep sea experience, definitely not a navigator, thought they could wing it to Tahiti from New England during a pandemic that has most all ports from here to the tip of Patagonia closed to outsiders. Having deep sea fished ,I've rarely been so concerned for a person, thankfully he isnt going.

I'm conflicted with Mick because he's the best rail surfer of all-time BUT he's an average tube rider AND has ZERO air game, yet; he has a won multiple world titles -- or should I say handed multiple world titles?! The judges would give Mick 9's for 2 safe turns when other surfers were landing much harder and riskier maneuvers but only getting 8's. The judging criteria never made sense. Can't blame Mick for repeating safe roundhouse carves if the judges are going to throw 9's at it. Unfortunately for me, it ruined competitive surfing as a whole. I stopped watching it and it's helped my sanity LOL. I think MOST fans just want honest and common sense scoring. We don't need our favorite surfers to win. It wasn't Mick people were hating... it was the scoring system the people hated and Mick was being used as the example. They were over-scoring Mick for much of his three world title runs. Mick is confusing that with hate when fans were just stating the obvious. I think MOST of us know Mick is a GREAT person and know he is a GREAT surfer. But WE also know he was extremely over-scored and fans were just pointing out the facts. Sorry Mick! Not your fault. It's the WSL's fault for sucking!

  • @bgwhalley

@@1Nate987 Love it when kooks don't even know their kooks like yourself. Comparing him to the WSL field he was on tour with... yes, kook! The following are all arguably better than Mick at barrel riding: Kelly, Taj, Parko, Hobgood's, John John, & Julian. There are 30 people on tour, therefore, that puts Mick closer to the middle of the pack at tube riding. At rail surfing he was #1. At airs he was last or at least tied at last with Knox. Those were the two guys who could never do an air. So please STOP acting like you're not a kook when it's obvious you are a kook!
