Yep, I cannot remember just 'going for a drive' since we moved back to the UK in 2012. It's not just expensive, but the traffic often takes the fun out of it too. Nipping to the Peak District back in the 70s was one of life's little pleasures.

Yes indeed and the old folk used to go for a drive, sit in the car and read the newspaper with a flask and sandwich and then drive home without even getting out! Now theres traffic, speed bumps, cameras and eye watering fuel prices. Motoring is no longer a pleasure.

5:46 that roundabout (I believe it’s know as the Ollerton roundabout) is a nightmare. I don’t think that’s just your cars acceleration coursing that problem. I’ve had that issue several times on that particular roundabout and I drive a Toyota Aygo. It seems to me that lorry’s just barge onto the roundabout because otherwise they’d have no hope of getting out, as the roundabout is tiny for the number of exits it has.

Nice job. The superchargers are a bit variable in the pricing. I think the last one I used was 35p pKw but it was at a motorway service area. Still not too bad a price overall. You can program in your home address so that when you use Navigate you can just press "Home" and it does the route for you from wherever you are. I think you can also change the automatic "recalculate your route" timing. The Tesla works out from traffic info that if another route (including charging) is faster by 10 minutes (default) it will recalculate and give you a new route as you go along. It may even (I have no information on this) take into account how busy the charging stations are and/or how fast they can charge. If you have a reason to use a particular charging stop (theres a nice farmshop at Tebay services for example) you can fiddle around and add it manually and get it to recalculate based on your "preferred" stop(s).

Hey Ashley, For the trip planner, the more you drive the car the more accurate it'll get, especially if you use Autopilot. I've had my Model 3 Performance for a little over 2 years now and on a drive from where I live in Cumbria down to Silverstone for their 'Lap Land' Christmas event I arrived within 2% of their estimate and within 5 minutes. (Over a multi hour drive this is amazing accuracy!) The car starts to take into account that you regularly do say 75 instead of 70, and the speeds you do on back roads as well. On my trip to the south coast of France (Visited Monaco) it was very accurate as well, within 3% for every stop along the way. Only time it got thrown off a bit was doing the North Coast 500, a lot of stopping to let people past and rather slow speeds due to the bumpy and narrow roads. :) (I used the Supercharger network entirely! Got some free charging in northern Italy but I'm not sure why!) The car is an absolute joy to drive for long distances. Comfortable seats, confident handling, amazing sound system, nice open cabin, and lots of performance. Hope you're enjoying yours too!

It’s great to have a practical route that I understand to compare the range on the Tesla. I live near rufford ford alongside the A1 and drive around the country a lot for work. When I go to Liverpool I take the quick route there (arrive 8am) then over the peaks on the way back usually leaving around 11am completely missing any rush hours. The A1 is full of people trying to rush and not getting anywhere. Lorries taking up the first lane or overtaking taking up both and tiny slip roads. You can’t go fast on it, best just to accept it :-). Lorries always cut you up on that roundabout with the McDonald’s even in my diesel Peugeot :-).

At the start of a journey it estimates the percentage of battery charge you will have when you arrive-38% in your case. However this estimate is arrived at based on its experience of your past driving consumption during local drives. Therefore, because you had a steady drive over the Pennines with few stop/starts, the consumption turned out to be a lot better than previous local drives and you managed to have 58% at the end of the trip to Rufford. Going back it would then be able to estimate the charge needed with much more accuracy.

It'd be interesting to hear what you think of the touch screen for operating most of the cars features/functions. Personally I'm put off touch screens as they're difficult to use on the move, whereas the iDrive in my i3s is such a cinch (as with your 3 series). Otherwise, good video and glad you had an enjoyable drive. I still get a lot of enjoyment on the roads and would take the scenic route any day. Regarding the range predictions I see these in the same way as ICE to be honest and something that we need to accept as part of the tech second guessing. I've spend most of my driving life in ICE cars and the variability of urban vs extra urban etc. seems to give similarly big differences. Most cars seem to have a 15mpg difference which is a big difference in overall range. It's just that we never measure ICE by range as petrol stations are so quick/easy. So we tend to use mpg instead.

Regarding your comment on catching other drivers out. This is definitely a thing with EV's due to the instant torque/acceleration. When there are more EV's on the road, people will become accustomed to it but in the meantime, if you drive an EV it seems like ICE is ponderously slow. Gaps that were previously impossible (without causing traffic to slow) are easily managed. My i3s is supposed to be quicker to 30mph than the previous gen M3 and this is brilliant for a funny little hatchback. It catches people out all the time.

  • @VoxelLoop

@@audigex With Superchargers you arrive, the chargers are actually working, you plug in, walk away. It's as easy as that. With third-party ones you're dealing with broken chargers, needing to install apps, call companies to get them to reset the charger, and to top it off, the fear of arriving at a charger at a low state of charge just to be greated with a broken charger. For EV adoption charging networks REALLY need to up their game! Otherwise Tesla is going to take their whole market by opening up Supercharger's to other brands as they've started doing in other countries. :)

You need to get used to using autopilot - once you are used to its limitations and adapt accordingly, it really is brilliant. I drove 1300 miles over 2 days in my Model S (granted on much better roads in France and Spain) and doubtful i'd have had the ability to do that in any other car as well over 95% of the journey was on autopilot. A few tips to hopefully help you get used to it: - avoid Navigate on Autopilot - it only has a tiny proportion of the features it has in the US so is mostly redundant over here and the one feature it has will occasionally try and take you off a junction you dont want to come off at - even on autopilot, rest your foot above the gas pedal in case there is any phantom brake. a quick tap and the brake goes away - when autolane changing, just be ready for it occasionally steering back and aborting the lane change - although i've used it elsewhere, it's mostly for motorways and dual carriageways and takes the stress and monotony out of the drive. Avoid using on single lane roads or in towns

  • @audigex

The build quality issues have dropped away a lot - early Model 3s (2017-2019 ish) had a lot of problems, but in mid 2020 UK cars switched from the California factory to the China factory (and later this year, should switch again to Germany). The MIC (Made-in-China) cars have far fewer problems than the American-built cars, since Tesla learned a lot of lessons from their first factory. There are still some quality control issues, but far far fewer than there used to be. Tesla are now selling over 1 million cars a year, so obviously you'll hear about some problems - but it's really not a massive issue now

@@audigex Would totally agree with this. Though I have a Fremont (California) built Model 3 here in the UK which I picked up in late 2019, it doesn't have any build quality or reliability issues aside from some of the interior trim that wasn't clicked into place properly, fixed for free by Tesla Service ( Who came to me to fix it) when I reported a rattling issue. The China-built cars have thicker paint, good panel alignment, and are all-around better built than the ones we were getting back when I picked up mine 2019. :) But hey, I lucked out with the old Performance wheels though! Not sure I'm a huge fan of the new 'Uberturbines' personally! I love that 'spokey' look of the old ones.

All correct but not very easy to understand. A kW is the instantaneous power available. A kWh is that power maintained for an hour. So, in other words, the power being generated is measured in kW. How long it can deliver those kW for is measured in kWh.

Hi Ashley, that lorry which pulled onto the roundabout in front of you never had any intention to slow or stop regardless of your approach speed.it looked to me as if he had seen you coming and decided that you would not have to slow much to let him through, all we wanted was to save himself a bit of time t your expense, exactly the style of inconsiderate driving that has sadly become so familiar. The fact that you were not in any real danger is true but inappropriate. Cheers, Richard.

Cars are different things to different people, personally I want a involved drive which doesn't involve range anxiety. 0 to 60 times are great but soon become boring when that's the only exiting thing they do especially at cost of range and the waiting period to charge. The silent drive and the sterile environment isn't for me.

EV owners don't tend to do a 'full charge' like you would in a petrol car, if you can plug in at home then you just plug in all the time and top up the miles you've used each night. That way you know every morning you''ve got the same, takes the need to think away. Most will find an electricity tarrif that allows you to charge in the middle of the night at a lower cost, I don't think Ash has this yet. My current contract is coming to an end, so I'm renewing with Octopus Go with a night time rate of 7.5p /kwh. So I can add about 100miles every night for £2.10, at the new higher electricity prices. If I needed to fill it then it would take 3 nights and £6.30.

@@smc812 I think Ash's tesla is one with the new Lithium Sulphur batteries that you can charge to 100% on a regular basis as it doesnt have the same degradation profile as LiOn. @@roderickmain9697 LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) car should be routinely charged to 100%, but that doesn't mean you should drive them until 'the light comes on' before charging like a petrol car. My point is pricing a full charge probably isn't how either of us charge our EVs.

Just wait until you have to charge up at a service station and get ripped off price per kw, thats if you can find a free charging point! Then when the majority of folk go electric it won't be cheaper any more because the government will have to recoup lost revenue so I expect we will be charged by the mile, or very high car tax. Then of course, is rechargeable electric the way forward? Remember when we were encouraged to go diesel? That was a disaster! So we may end up on hydrogen or swappable batteries and your current ev will be obsolete! Finally, do you have ownership not only of the car but also of the software that makes it work? Will you have to pay for updates? When you sell the car will all the extras you purchased be transferable or will the new owner have to pay again? If you have an accident and the main battery fuse is removed, will this only be replaceable by the dedicated dealer (Tesla etc) at whatever they want to charge? Whats insurance like for ev's? Do ev's work (range) and charge as well in freezing temperatures?
