This is also my very 1st DE razor..after 20plus years of cartridge..I really love DE razor ..world of differences..now I have a collection of 6 which rotate using them..Edwin Jagger, Vikings Blade, Parker, Baili and Yaqi.

Good start. A few words of advice: -try to make the lather a little bit wetter, it will be much slicker and easier to the face - purchase a synthetic brush, it's much more user friendly. That brush that you have is boar. It takes time and usage to develop into a usable brush, and still can be a pain to use. All in all, a great shave.

Amazing stuff! For a great shave, i recommend washing your face with water and leaving the water on your face while you dip the brush (i recommend badger brush, they are really great, they absorb moisture and dry out very easily, also they are not as expensive as people think and are great from the first use). For a shaving cream i recommend Taylor of Old Bond Street jars, because they are cheap, produce amazing lather and you can keep the jar for making lather once you use all the cream inside. Pro tip; turn the jar upside down when you are lathering the brush so you don't get water (mold) in your product. I personally use Astra blades, i find that more sharp blades like Feather mess up my skin. One of the first stuff i bought when switching to DE was alum block. Oh you will need it. I use it before putting aftershave. Moisturizing is the most important at least for me. I stay away from alcohol based stuff and try to use aloe based or lavender essential oil based whenever i can. I still use cartridge razor when i'm in a hurry, but i will never buy foam in a can ever again in my life. Keep it up, Sir!

I started shaving in 1963 with the Gillette my dad used during WWII. I still use it today. Try either Proraso or Speick shave cream. Very slick.

Nice shave. Welcome to you. I started double edge shaving about 4 years ago. Up to 14 razors, 7 brushes( all synthetic), and 15 different scents of shave soaps. I now enjoy shaving and look forward to rotating the hardware. I get great results. Be careful with the Futur clone. It is a very efficient razor. Take care.

Nice story about the German pharmacies. I'm glad you are now in the great wet shaving world. I am since last year and I love it so much. This razer is actually made of chromed stainless steel, good step above pot metal. The handle is made in China but the head itself is actually made in Germany.

The origin might be correct China/Germany and think I read that somewhere in the listing for this razor but the head is for sure cast zinc. If this would be stainless it would not have been chromed but polished. No stainless steel would be found in a $15 razor. Stainless would have to be machined instead of cast but by looking at the shape of the head I can tell you with certainty that it is a cast head. Cheers, Heiko

I agree about the sharp edges. Quite a few razors have that. Maybe its cheaper from a manufacturing point of view. The Karve Overlander is one razor with this problem. The Henson razor initially had that problem but they bevelled the corners in version 2 to tackle it.

you can use some pre-shave for the neck area, my personal suggestion is proraso blue or the cube 2.0

Congrats on joining the wet shaving culture. I've been wet shaving for a few yrs now and will never use cartridge razors again. safety razors will give you a superior shave every time with the right technique. Once you find the right combo of razor, soap, blade, and technique you will love to shave. The Rockwell 6c razor and Leaf twig razor are excellent. Vintage Gillette razors are awesome too. There are so many soaps and razors to try that are great. Better make room in your bathroom because you're about to go down the wet shaving rabbit hole......lol great job and have fun.

Hi Heiko Great video. Like you, I thought DE shaving went out with my Grandfathers generation and I've really enjoyed rediscovering it and going on my own DE shaving journey. There is a learning curve but nothing too major. Funnily enough, the Q shave razor was one of my firsts to. just don't make the mistake I made thinking 6 was mild and 1 aggressive. Oh boy, did I have some difficult shaves. 1 is mild 6 is aggressive. You will enjoy the Gillette slim adjustable, it holds up really well even to modern razors. Your sensitive neck will improve too. Cartridge razors did none of us any favours. And when you do improve you may want to consider an aggressive. My recommendation is the infamous Muhle R41 its a great shaver with very little irritation. Not for beginners but not as scary as people make out. And, once you workout how to get a good lather you won't look back. All the best with the channel.

Thanks for your encouraging words. It is really a strange thing that i have never come across DE razors in my almost 48 years. It took a trip to a German drugstore in the razor isle to make me realize that there is more out there than cartridge razors. It is really fun too.

I gave up cartridge shaving about 2-3 years ago. Switched to a DE and never looked back! Rather than spend $ on expensive cartridges I am enjoying buying shaving cream. I have a few razors but I default to the King C more of the time... great razor. In England we have a synthetic version of that brush, which by the way is boar hair. The synthetic version is not amazing but is much better than the boar one and it doesn't shed. It is also cheaply priced. I prefer synthetic. I have given you a sub. Good luck with the channel.

Really good video. I started about 5 years ago and it is addictive. I only have 3 DE razors and 1 shavette. One of which is the razor I your video. I actually never use it as I don’t like it. I’d recommend either Edwin Jagger or Merkur. Shaving creams and aftershaves are addictive collection items. Proraso is a good one and Nivea will always have its place on my shelf. I’d recommend synthetic brushes. They don’t shed like an Alsatian, they tend to be cheaper and they don’t require animals to die. Blade wise, gillette nacet, platinum and 7oclock are good. So are sharks. One thing to note, blades are subjective. People rave about one blade and you could try it and hate it. Therefore, find a blade that works and buy them in bulk! Enjoy your new addiction mate!

You are right, blades are numerous. You got to find one which is good and stick with it. Addictive is truly what it is.

Thanks for sharing. The head of this razor is chrome plated zamak (an amalgam). It is modeled after the DE89, which is regarded as a solid mild starter razor. IIRC, the handle is chrome plated bras The gold on the vintage Gillette razors (pre WW2) are very very thin and coated with varnish. Do not polish these. They are not actually electroplated. They were given a gold "wash". The vintage nickel plated razors are more robust. Some people use Simichrome polish on them, or just a jewelers cloth. Personally, I do not use abrasives at all. When I get a vintage razor I soak it in a jar of very warm water with Dawn dishwashing liquid in it, and leave it to soak for two days. Then I brush it up with a soft toothbrush or a soft nylon "knuckle brush". I have even resorted to running them through the dishwasher in the silverware rack. I disinfect with rubbing alcohol or high proof vodka. This will kill viruses and bacteria. A brief dunk in Barbicide would be better, but I don't keep that on hand. If you want to lubricate the TTO mechanisms, refined mineral oil is probably best because it doesn't stink like machine oil does and won't make you break out. Be very stingy with this. More is not better. Gillette did not use any lubricant on any of their mechanisms at the factory that I know of. But, now they are antiques, and mineral oil will stop a squeak. The Gillette Slim adjustable really impressed me, and IMO is the best inexpensive vintage razor for a new wet shaver to learn on. The short comb The New Gillette razor is really my goto after a few years of shaving this way. If you like the nickel plated Super Speed razor, then you will find the Schick Krona razor to be right up there too. My only advice to you is to hold off on chasing a BBS until you have found the right blade/razor combination and a shave soap that provides all of the cushion and slickness that you want with a great post shave feel. The most important thing to learn is your beard map. Until you know your beard map, just be happy with a DFS. I have a goal of acquiring a brass Gibbs Replica from Heritage Collection Shaving whenever these drop. The first iteration was zamak and AL and ran around $60. The pricing of the brass version is not yet known. Welcome to the rabbit hole. Oh, brushes. I spent big, by my standards, on a Symogue Badger (TOC) with a cherry handle. It ran around $65 shipped from Portugal. IMO, Symogue brushes are a luxury item at a normie price. If you are looking for synthetic brushes PAA markets them at a bargain price and you can always pick up a Simpson synthetic for around $30 which are highly regarded in the forums. I don't know boar bristle or horse hair, but these are what ordinary men used in our great grandfather's day. Today, it is synthetics for most people. If you want to try out SE shaving, check our Fuzzy Shaves on YT. There are a couple of straight razor shavers on YT too. Those things scare me. Be sure to include Astra SP and Nacet blades in your trials. These perform well for the average shaver with an average beard and average skin sensitivity, but YMMV as in all things about wet shaving.

great shave . If you want the bristles softer on any natural hair brush like badger horse or boar, soak it for 15-20 minutes before shave

I do speak German. I don't currently have pre-shave but will definitely give it a try. If I do a three pass shave i definitely want BBS. If I can't achieve that after three passes I probably blame the razor 😉

Brushes do shed in the beginning until it gets broken in it will be rough on the face. Im breaking in a new badger brush in right now

​@@Heiko-shaves Check out the thread "Breaking in a NEW Boar brush a little quicker!" on badger&blade: Place it in a mug with cold water, then place it the fridge - every 24 hours take it out and rub it dry on a towel - this will force the bristles' ends to split faster. The Wilkinson brush is around forever (got my first in the early 90s) - recently Wilkinson released a synthetic (as a replacement I guess). Stay sharp. Cheers from Berlin.

What is the price range? How much more aggressive? There are so many razors that are just a bit more aggressive but of course there are also razors that are a lot more aggressive.

@@jhonsenliandi1 For $70 you can get a Rockwell 6C (three piece razor). It is adjustable but not with a knob but by exchanging plates. It comes with three plates that give you a total of 6 different settings. Once you find out which plate you like best you can just stick with it. Rockwell 6C hands down. I hope that help.

most shaving creams has to use a brush. If not it will state brushless, your lather looks dry

It’s not a good idea to use polish on a razor. You’re removing finish when you use a polish. It’s best to send your razor in and have someone like Razor Emporium to apply a new finish.

I am not interested in replating and i am aware that polishes are not good for plated items. Razor emporium KZread channel has a pretty good video about how to clean and gently bring the shine back without damaging the finish. They sell a polishing cloth that is special formulated for the nickel or gold finish of razors. Thanks for the comment.

Nothing beats Gilette 5 blade pro glide cartridges. They may be expensive initially but each cartridge lasts for a month. So at the end it is cheaper than other shaving methods. You can't get a cut or nick even if you wanted to, using a cartridge. This is why the Gilette cartridge is the most widely, cheapest, safest used shaving method. Double edge safety razors are dangerous if you don't know how to use them properly and you will get a cut no matter how experienced you are.

you go to a channel that is all about shaving with safety razors to tell people how great your Gillette 5 blade pro razor is? You can use whatever razor you like, do whatever floats your boat. I will continue to live dangerously. Thanks for your advice
