@@2vintage - mating new uppers to “seasoned” lowers is hit & miss, but with HONDA anythings, it’s normally a hit. on topic: you damn-sure won’t hurt anything by changing oil(s) & any filter(s). but, as I understand, you’re in the business of fix/repairing, then moving on. I’d say she’s fixed after chain repair & the burden of post-op maintenance could be extended to the next Dude (upon recommendation) awesome job, as usual & thanks for taking us along. P.S. - I picked up a Minty Yamaha 2-stroke twin 350cc “Torque Induction” toy. she’s been properly Cafe’d out & beautifully painted with all new needed parts. I’m 6’6” 240lbs so I’m curious what this ride will be like for me…one thing I do know is that shift-revs will be higher than Post Malone on his birthday, and I’ll look like Shaq on a girl’s Huffy. an old Dude who passed away, put a ton of thought, effort & dollars into her, so I must finish it & take her out for rips, so his Soul can officially rest in peace. I’ll find a way to send you pics, so you can see how you’re inspiring a 43yr old ‘former-you’ to get back at it…though, me wife isn’t the most appreciative of your inspirational videos here in YT. Cheers, Man.

Rebuilding just the head. New cylinder piston and rings. Where the hell is the shavings going to come from? You keep saying this on all his videos. I have rebuilt more engines than I can remember. But there isn’t “shavings” to come from anywhere just doing rings.

A little piece of advice that'll save you a lot of time those carburetors both the pilot and the main jet can be changed by just removing the fuel nut you do not have to remove the bowl on those carburetors to access both Jets that will save you a lot of time

On most bikes you can loosen both carb clamps and tilt the carb a little so you don’t have to take it all the way off cause a 400ex has to have several parts taken off to get the carb completely off

Great job and cool project. I'm sure your chain was too loose. Definitely something to check before riding hard. These things create so much torque and that tiny front sprocket spins so fast something has to give if things aren't all in spec. I bought a running 2004 YFZ 450 pre COVID for $1,000, rode it for 45 minutes and ran like a beast. Last go round on the trail I decided to really got on it and promptly snapped the chain, which I knew was too loose and needed adjustment, and cracked the case since I had no case saver. Right where the clutch goes in so that was the end of that quad. Luckily sold it for parts for more than I paid. Not a bad idea to change the chain with the sprockets and make sure the chain tension is at OEM spec. Keep up the great work!

Get the Niche performance camshaft, it will wake it up for the 20 bucks haha. I ran the Namura 440 kit and the Niche performance cam, and it was a beast.

some people may not like this comment, but you gotta be somewhat hard on her after a rebuild, the only way to get the rings seated properly, not saying heat cycles are dumb but giving her some fuel to eat is def the best way to go.
