There's a fine line between being pretentious and sarcastic. Maynard isn't pretentious , he's grateful for what he has. The fans are pretentious if new , the ones that have been around from the beginning are grateful for the continued perspective

Sure, I wouldn't call him pretentious either, but he does lack some humility sometimes. I mean, his ridiculous rule of not being allowed to record anything on your phone when they're performing live is just insane. It's not like people aren't going wild doing their concerts. I should know, I've been there multiple times. And to act like they're in a position where they could demand such things from their fans and tell them to only look at them at all times. It just feels a bit arrogant. That, plus his idea that he's above certain fundamental things and beliefs and that he has found some sort of ultimate truth just rubs me the wrong way. The guy is absolutely brilliant as an artist, but it seems like some of it has gone to his head.

@darkaquatus I've listened to these for 30 years and they've evolved as musicians and ppl so maybe he did find something. The phone thing is them not just him wanting us to live in the moment to experience something in real time thru our own eyes. Not everything needs to be recorded but to perhaps use our memories again

saw one interview where he's like look the lyrics aren't some new epiphany or even incredibly hard to do. i appreciate that people like it but i'm not the greatest poet or anything. that's not being pretentious at all. just a guy who tries to take this one thing serious or else why waste your time with it.

I smoked a lot of weed and hallucinogens in high school and listened to TOOL. But as a sober 42 yr old, I enjoy TOOL more because I catch the subtleties and deeper meaning that I couldn't grasp back in 97. However, it never hurts to smoke a bong and crank it up. Regardless, you do get drawn into that world weather you are driving to work in the morning or getting blitzed on a Friday night.

What's funny is that Maynard also gets annoyed by Tool fans and generally has a low tolerance for their obsessiveness. "I'm just a guy that writes poems, the fans are the ones that make it weird." is a paraphrased version of a quote he's said recently. Artistically I do think he tries to write an authentic response to what the music evokes in him without filter. For a front man, 'fake-deep' seems inevitable in my opinion. As a huge fan of the band, I agree that the majority of the fanbase is contentious and combative. It always feels like they're either looking down their nose at you or trying to force some additional requirement onto your experience in order for you to enjoy it at their level. Low vibrational behavior disguised in a 'spiral out' slogan. I hope you're able to tune out the negativity and enjoy them in your own way. Lastly, I humbly suggest two instrumental Nine Inch Nails tracks for atmospheric vibes that have a movie soundtrack feel to them. "The Mark Has Been Made" and "Just Like You Imagined." Always love the videos fellas, thanks for posting!

I get why you don’t like Maynard. Yes, he does come off as pretentious. But given all he’s gone through - losing his mother (for all intents and purposes) at 11, enduring physical (and possibly sexual) abuse at the hands of a family member, dealing with substance abuse, etc. - you have to understand that his art is his therapy/coping mechanism. I think given where he’s come from and what he’s been through, he should be hailed as a success story, no matter how douchey he can come across at times. He’s remarkably well adjusted considering his history. He could have turned out a lot worse.😂

30 year tool fan here. 1. I don’t use drugs w tool. To me, it’s immersive as is. Though I know others say it’s better (though I don’t think it’s a majority) 2. Maynard can’t win. He despises the fame…but by not giving fans/crazies what they expect in singers it comes across as a dick or ego. 3. If you really see Maynard interact with non-fans who demand all the weird things…he is fantastic and a hard worker and helps his community. Truly, he helps his city and community in many ways. Not for himself or tool.

For me as a tool fan. It’s just the instrumentals being HEAVY, everyone is firing on all cylinders in their work. Then Maynard’s lyrics/vocals just get me to think a little and put life into a different perspective. Lateralus best example, but when Danny hits that tabla(?) in this. I just get lost, it’s incredibly therapeutic.

@@senorsavage8702… oh I definitely have opinions about pedophiles and murderers. Just because we have similarities of evil within us doesn’t mean we are the same as pedophiles and murderers. The act of certain evils is what makes the difference between those who are pedophiles and murderers and those who don’t act on certain evils. There are those who actually commit murder and those who have wanted to murder someone but didn’t. Those who actually take advantage of children sexually and those who see an attractive young woman yet finds out that women is actually a child and walks away. Pedophiles are a certain type of evil person that deserves to be punished. Especially in the prison system if you get what I am saying. Murderers deserve their own punishment as well.

I had a brother who was 11 years older than me who expose me to tool at a young age, taking me to shows + 93 + 94 and I was 11 and 12. When I was a young adult, I had plenty of Tool albums in my library and I was also completely sober and straight edge. When lateralis was released, I had began experimenting and psychedelics and Revisited some of the older library and can confirm that psychedelics enhance the tool experience, especially live as they have an incredible visual show. They have a way of bringing the music to life with the visual show and show experience as a whole. I have also been to plenty of pool shows sober and they are just as visually amazing and more memorable LOL if you could imagine. Thanks as always for the honest reaction Charles and you guys keep doing what you're doing. When i'm not broke as hell I will hop on patreon and Goose that Spirit some more brother. I always explain Tools music as a journey. You hear 3 different songs in one song. It has a tribal sound. This song is a social commentary of where we come from to where we are, the chaotic creatures that we are. You really don’t even have to listen to the words cause the music and engineering are top notch. The energy is also really great too. They write all the instrumentals then write lyrics to the music. They’re basically the modern day jam band like The Grateful Dead and Phish used to be.

@@onelight1734 I’m talking generational. Tools music tends to be 2-3 times longer than most songs. You don’t have to know the words you can just sit there and absorb the sound. They are the next generation of jam bands. Phish and GD are somewhat singular in there time just like Tool. Sorry if you don’t like the assessment but I don’t really care if you agree or not.

Now you're understanding what the band is about. Maynard hates attention. He wants you to turn your focus to the music. It's why he stands behind the band on stage. In the dark. It's why his vocals are background ish. It's why his lyrics are vague but meaningful....to your own interpretation and experience. This song is more to the point without that vagueness, but overall, that is what he wants. The interview you saw was him deflecting attention. Deflecting praise for the depth of the thought put into the making of the song. It's his was of making you hate him so he doesn't have to be praised. And you're doing exactly what he intends by having those feelings about him. And what else are you doing? Throwing praise into the musicianship of the band. Mission accomplished. For him. And you. Congratulations. You are now privy as to why we are fans. The feeling is undeniable. And once you accept that, THEN the lyrics and the delivery of how he send s them can be appreciated. Now you have ascended. Lol. Now keep hating Maynard. Let the hate consume you. 😂

Of course it works with all music being listened under influence of substances, but tool's ability to create complex and intricate, yet laconic and emotional 'constructions' only enhances the impression you get from such experience.

JB, stereotypes are subconscious biases, they tend to be generic. I definitely wouldn't recommend putting complex human beings into categories either too broad or too narrow at the best of times, certainly not based from some KZread comments. Music is emotional, therefore fans communicate passion in different ways. It isn't necessarily directed personally... Firstly, social media isn't always an easy place to convey feelings into words without the context of connotation. Messages can be misinterpreted or taken the wrong way. That's why sarcasm rarely works. What's more, not everybody has the capacity of being able to express themselves in a confident and coherent manner, without feeling self conscious, awkward or a deep inadequacy (I say this from my own personal struggles!).That's why social media is so powerful because it often gives someone a voice when they often don't have one. Expressing an opinion can be intimidating, especially with people that are knowledgeable about music! As a general rule of thumb, nobody wants to be labelled in a negative way by others. We are social animals, which means in general we are actually trying to fit in. Behind any post perceived to be pretentious or not, is somebody who has a fervent interest for a particular subject. Besides, and the last point, people are rarely the same in person as they are online anyway...

Maynard is notoriously introverted, or, at least, he was, in his early career. That's why he used to face away from the audience in early performances. I feel like, the way he comes across, is an introverted person's way of attempting to deal with fame, while enjoying it at the same time. If you watch a few interviews with him, you may come to find out that hes a very down-to-earth and (somewhat) humble and hard-working person. He might be "off his rocker" a bit, as most devout artists tend to be.

From a psychological standpoint the use of various substances tends to give you the opportunity to escape from yourself mentally. I'm not saying that it gives you a completely new way of thinking, but at the very least it seems to alleviate inhibitions and soften biases. The reason I like their music is specifically due to their ability to pull you in. This gives you the opportunity to think about things you usually wouldn't, or even think about usual things from a different perspective.

As a Tool fan I can 100 agree with you on our kind and Mjk, but the skins n strings on the two are enough to forget all that for a bit... Chocolate Chip Trip is great live or studio and is all Danny and less than five minutes total...

Looking for a different kind of music from a band unlike any other? Ween will give you what you need. The best introductory album, in my opinion, would be "The Mollusk". Other great albums include; "Chocolate & Cheese", "Quebec", and "White Pepper", just to name a few. If you are interested in unique style that has that strange ability to draw you in as a listener......look no further. It's Ween. Thank me later.

As a tool fan, I get why you don't like us. I would like to think I'm not one or the fans you would dislike though. I don't need you to love them like many do. I accept they're not always something you enjoy. I don't imbibe in anything when listening for religious reasons. I can say I usually listen to them when I'm feeling an extreme emotion and that is what heightens the experience for me. Ticks and leeches if I'm angry. The pot if I'm pumped up. Right in two/Intension if I'm melancholy Lateralus if I'm feeling inspired or elated. Etc.

Were you reacting to the song or to fans or to an interview? The music stands on it’s own. Stone cold sober and there isn’t a better band out there as far as depth and talent in my opinion. I keep looking for better and haven’t found it. As far as the lyrics to this song, fake deep? I don’t get how anyone actually listens to these lyrics and gets to “fake deep”. Good thing there is plenty of music out there to choose from. Different strokes for different folks.

I'm a pretty big Tool fan, but I don't mind your generalization as I also find many of the most vocal fans to be insufferable. I really identified with your description of the band's ability to paint immersive musical landscapes that feel almost cinematic - that's how I try and describe it to my gf but she just thinks I'm a weirdo or something. I also agree that Maynard comes across as pretentious, but it doesn't lessen my appreciation for any of his music. I know it seems pretentious, but I enjoy how ambiguous much of what he says is, not because I'm a hipster (maybe I am, IDK), but because you really can mold his lyrics to mean almost anything you need them to. Schism, for example, might mean something entirely different to me than it does to the next listener. I don't really care all that much about what the "intended" meaning is. Anyways, honesty from you guys is always appreciated. Take care.

Beach/horizon music... Radiohead - subterranean homesick alien Appreciate your reviews guys even I dont agree. Ive started listening to tool as a sober young teen (and love them) continued listening to them as a full on stoner in My 20s (it definitely takes you to another level) and still in my 30s which allows me to reflect on all past listens. Tool live though on some substances is def a fucking experience

I appreciate the honest reaction / review and not ALL Tool fans are pushy fanatics that get upset when someone doesnt like Tool. Not sure if this is your chill Ibiza music or not but the 90's UK Trip-Hop band Morcheeba would be on my playlist. Check out their live concert @ Rockplast 2018 kzread.info/dash/bejne/paR80raHg8THoZc.html. Start @ the beginning or check out the set list and choose a song at random.

I love Tool and if you don’t like Tool is totally fine. Honestly that guy’s opinion is just like mine: nothing. When you said he is pretentious is your opinion and is an interesting approach but I wish you could elaborate on it and made you think that, and not just calling it out on him and the fans, maybe you’ve said it on your videos before -this is the first one I’ve watched-, but I wish you said more about it. To me it is an honest opinion: we are a violent specie, and not very wise when it comes to being civilized. Maynard is obviously taking it from a religious pov, but generally speaking, the description fits nicely of whom we are. Perhaps you just don’t know how to express your reaction at that moment?

If you partake, you Definitely need to listen to an entire album while under. Also, the tool fans you don’t like are the same Tool fans Maynard doesn’t like. They aren’t pleasant fans because Sadly engagement on the internet in general is predominantly negative. However Most Tool fans are great people.
