Taking off the Lavalier Mic at the End because is was Recorded Live, great Reaction Video Sir, Loved how you got excited about hearing some Bars in there, Ren seems to be able to do it all, he Raps at a High Level with constant Flow changes and Clever Bars, his Lyrics are always full of word play and double meanings, but he also has a Powerful and Melodic Reggae inspired Singing Voice. He was misdiagnosed as having multiple different illnesses and Psychological issues for nearly 10yrs, when in fact he had Lyme Disease and is still suffering the consequences of the long period of misdiagnoses. He was signed and dropped by Sony at a Young age because of his illness but has been making and releasing Music independently for many years and has a lot to discover on KZread, he also plays in a Band, The Big Push who are also worth checking out, if you go down the Ren Rabbit Hole you will seldom be Disappointed. For his Rapping ability i suggest, Ren - Genesis, for his singing Voice, Ren X Chinchilla - How To Be Me (live) and for his Band check out, The Big Push - I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop

This is the kind of artistry that gives "broken" people hope. Ren, through this performance piece, has become to a lot of people exactly what he stated in the song, "...the voice that you hear when you loosen the noose on the rope". So powerful, so impactful. The song structure itself is incredible. It starts off as a battle between his positive (Angel) and negative (Demon) aspects, the negative then makes an overpowering last ditch effort to reign supreme, tearing free and trying to take control, but ultimately fails as the final act, being the "God" aspect, emerges Triumphant, though still acknowledging and accepting that it will ALWAYS be a battle because we are all "a coin with 2 different sides". It's a beautifully cathartic and raw musical masterpiece. Ren is truly special. Welcome to the Ren rabbit-hole, it's a trip worth taking. This was the 4th take he did and yes, it was done live. Wait until you hear some of his other stuff, especially his storytelling ("The Tale of Jenny & Screech"). You haven't even touched the breadth of this young man's talent yet. The pig character (imo) represents the doctors and therapist who have essentially butchered him for years through their misdiagnosis. It's the system that focuses on peddling more pills than on genuinely trying to help to fix broken/ill people, caring more about profit than individual health. The bastardization of the hippocratic oath. He literally thought he was going insane because he was told repeatedly that the pain and symptoms he was experiencing were all in his head (psychosomatic). He had reached a point where he literally resigned himself to dying before he reached 30. Turns out he had Lyme's disease the whole time and it ran rampant through his system for 10 years, even to the point of causing brain damage. Ironically, if Ren hadn't gone through what he has, would he have ever made the art he has? There's no question that his suffering has shaped his music and now he's finally getting the recognition he undoubtedly deserves. I've said it before, I'll say it again, Ren is special.

You are at the top of the rabbit hole. Ren has taken years of physical and mental illness and made it into art. He contracted Lyme Disease and was misdiagnosed and treated improperly for so long that it caused even more damage. When he speaks of being weak or in the wheelchair or bed for 23 hours per day throughout some of the music in his catalog, this is true experience, although everyone can find things to connect to in their own lives. Quite often, for him, it's literal. I don't know if there has been substance abuse from self-medication, but certainly the mental health meds prescribed to him have done as much harm as good, if not more. Keep that in mind when you watch "Chalk Outlines" with Chinchilla. You should also check out some upbeat happy stuff - there's a great video of him busking on the streets of Brighton singing a very reggae version of, "I Shot The Sheriff." He may think he's not original because he takes inspiration from others, but he's as original as they come. Welcome to the Ren journey!

Ren became seriously ill in 2010 but his condition was misdiagnosed for 6 or 7 years. The meds he was given just made him worse and he was often confined to his bed for up to 23 hours a day. In 2016 he was finally correctly diagnosed with Lyme Disease and he had a couple of stem cell transplants which improved his health. However, the years of incorrect treatments have left Ren with a badly damaged immune system and some brain damage. He is currently receiving specialist treatment in Canada where he is likely to be for at least 6 months

Hi Charlie. Loved your vid on Hi Ren. I’m constantly finding new things to learn about and from. You are my newest addition to that learning. I have two tattoos on my arms, for similar reasons. On my left it reads “life is pain”. Sounds dark i know but i feel its an eternal truth that we all share. The right arm reads “truth, hope, love”. This, i feel, counters the other. In these sentiments we can find the resilience to withstand the former. On to Hi Ren itself. I think of the two characters he portrays as “shadow Ren” and “Light Ren”. Shadow Ren isn’t evil or the Devil. He’s Ren. Light Ren isn’t all goodness and truth either. They’re both true. To empathise this Ren gives Shadow Ren a sense of humour. It may be dark but he cracks jokes. “The next Jimmy Hendrix”, “She sells seashells”, “music is al about the creative process”, etc. this leads to the frantic, chaotic guitar rap of Shadow Ren. Followed by Light REN’s response. Starting meekly, softly, it builds and builds. Rising to his feet and finally finding his voice in song. Finishing on “immortal, like you, we’re a coin with two different sides”. He’s saying they are the same. The same experiences. The same body. The same intellect. Then the final burst of exuberant guitar and voice. A reflection of the first time in the song. I believe that this is the two parts coming together. Recognising each other. For all their faults and flaws they are whole at last. This is reinforced by the final, spoken word section. We are all human beings. Great stuff. Love n’ stuff. Peace

This is an exceptional reaction! I really enjoyed the way in which you dissected the song, but you also let it ride. The fluidity is critical to the message. This masterpiece is undeniably poetic and haunting, but relatable to so many of us. I also loved that you identified that bar- the more intensely the light shined, the darker the shadow it cast. That was very impactful for me as well. Thank you for such a high quality reaction. You have certainly raised the bar. Great reaction video Charlie. I believe the interpretation of any art form should always be in the eyes / ears / mind of the beholder. We are all individuals who have travelled our own unique path in life, so we are equally blessed and cursed to measure everything by personal experience .... and as an artist myself, I always hope each individual who views my work can take something unique from it. I would assume Ren, and the majority of creative artist's, probably feel the same way. The main thing is the ability " true art " has to make people think and connect in their own way. I love that you were questioning every nuance, and allowing us an insight into how you think and what makes you tick. Respect Charlie. 🙏

Charlie, this was an in depth reaction to an incredible dramatic piece put to music. This is one truly astounding young man. Who is very real. I see some of the comments have told you of his medical struggles. I would highly encourage you to go to his page and read HIS words about this. I could go on for days about his brilliance. I so totally agree about the two paths to take from here. Sick Boi, is the natural progression. It is an INTENSE rap style song about his struggles with the medical process. But, his trilogy of tales are truly something to behold. His story telling ability is UNMATCHED. The tales absolutely MUST be seen IN order. You can find them all together under The Tale of Jenny and Screech Full. Do not make the same mistake other's have made and do them out of order. It ruins the story. Nice catch on the guitar blocking his way back to his "safe spot" in the chair. I thoroughly enjoyed this reaction. It was incredibly thoughtful and well put. Please, oh please continue down this path. Ren is astounding and ALL of his music is different. He has a very unique way of combining various styles of music to create a totally NEW art form. Like I said, I could go on for DAYS. But will stop. Thank you for this. I subbed, of course. Looking forward to seeing your next step in this journey. It will be a fun ride. Can't wait to see it.

Oh, good call, the guitar against the chair (in fairness there's nowhere else to put it) and the mic as a cannula, feeding medicine. Perhaps it's deliberate, Ren drawing attention to how music keeps him going, perhaps it's just coincidence. Perhaps it was subconscious on Ren's part. That's how great art happens.

Ren is therapy for so many from one song he helps so many people open up in ways therapists struggle to do in person. First time i watched Hi Ren i had a panic attack but thought i needed to watch it again so i watched someone reacting to it that was the best thing i could do i have watched many times since. One thing i think about this song is it needs to be seen by every one even in schools after a certain age, because how many children kill themselves because of the negativity towards them from nasty comments and bullying to them believing what is said. I went through hell, bullied all through school to the point i attempted suicide twice, and to many issues in my life since then I am a recovering alcoholic 11 years clean I suffer PTSD and other health issues so the majority of bad days over good is high, if this bullying had been dealt with i may have had a reasonable life not the existence i have to deal with now

he was glued to his bed for almost 10 years because he had Lyme disease, the problem was that for almost 8-9 years this wasnt diagnosed. He was misdiagnosed with Bipolar, Anxiety, depression etc. So medications made him more sick. The Lyme disease finally got diagnosed after 8 years by a specialist. Because of the Lyme disease he was allergic to about 95% of food, so all he ate was meat and some veggies. During his sickness he got a stress induced psychosis. He finally got a stemcell transplant that made him better, but that was before the Lyme disease was noticed. Luckily today he has been in Canada for the better half of a year to undergo treatment by a Lyme disease specialist to become as healthy as his can despite of his body being destroyed by this for nearly a decade. He missed out on being a young adult, trying to see what life would bring him in the twenties, missing parties, new years etc. He actually at one point resigned to the fact that he probably would live to see his thirties because of all this. (this was before he finally got the proper help). He just turned 33 in March. Like he said, he doesnt care if he only gets 80% well, as long as he can outlive his dream which is making music, then he is okay with that.

Ren has portrayed for us perfectly that all of mankind needs to accept this is who you are, no matter if you think differently. Yes, there are many students but there are also millions of victims that struggle to come to terms with the fact and seek help. While Ren suffers from undiagnosed Lyme disease that attacks almost every part of the body physically, it also attacks the brain and thinking process. Man's feeble effort to cure all ills fails to understand that one can never sever the tie between the ego and the id. The ID is the most disorganized and destructive part of man.

Samuel Perry-Falvey who filmed Hi Ren, talks about it in the comments of Jonathan Hiller's (Filmmaker Reacts) reaction to the song. Not a one-take video though audio was recorded live (and maybe in a single take, I don't know)

I'm a huge Ren fan, but I see in the comments that there are quite a few angry people getting on you for stopping too much or not reacting how they want you to. It's ridiculously stupid. It's not their channel, I thought you did a great job. Well done!!! I'd love to see you react to more of Ren.

Charlie - I stopped by your channel because you reacted so emotionally to my man John Farnham 🇦🇺 singing The Voice and I thought you'd love Ren. He can elicit such emotion with his music. He's quite the Unicorn 🦄 I've never seen an artist like Ren before. I like to suggest a video that will showase just a few of Ren's diverse talents. Your analysis is spot on this was recorded live the apparatus is the thing that records his lapel microphone and his guitar for the audio to mix with the video. We have the potential for the divine and for sin within us freewill gives us the power to choose. The Devil is "The Accuser" not just before God, for as long as you have consciousness, day & night it accuses your light.

Welcome onboard the Ren train. Loved your insights into this piece ❤. I've watched so many reactions to this for 2 months. Didn't even click that you've not reacted to this yet. I've been watching your reactions of John Farnham & co so subscribed to your channel. Took me a moment to realise it was your reaction in my feed. After listening to many things by Ren he is a masterful storyteller & poet in how he weaves lyrics. The things that sounded like mistakes at the beginning I think are done on purpose to set the scene. Seen him play the guitar in other songs - he is skilled. I really am looking forward to seeing your insights into some of the songs he sings. I've always appreciated your insights into singers. The ones he did with Chinchilla are beautiful.

Interesting comment about the guitar and the wheelchair. I can't say that it is or isn't as you said, but one thing to know about REN and his cameraman Sam is that everything is intentional from lighting to shadows to echoes to breathing. If you can hear it or see it in one of their videos it was intentional. This is true of 95% of anything you see or hear in his videos

He is taking off his microphone at the end. He has had Lyme disease since he was a teen and was misdiagnosed for about 8 years and given treatment of all kinds for various things which didn't do much and probably made him worse. He was bed ridden for most of that time. With the right diagnosis, he is getting the treatment he needs. He is currently in Canada getting specialized treatment.

My three favorite red tracks are Genesis, murderer, castles made of sand. I don’t think you’ve reacted to any of them and the first two have live versions that I like actually better than the video. He has so many amazing songs. It’s really hard to narrow it down but this is my list. Genesis will stay on the list. This is only the second song on your channel that I am watching. So I look forward to this reaction. I’m not sure if that’s an English or Australian accent but cheers from New York City.

Brilliant take, and welcome to the Ren Rabbit Hole! There is so much for everyone in his music. Ren spent 10 years battling Lyme Disease that was misdiagnosed as ME/CFS. From here, I would recommend one of two paths: check out either Sick Boi or check out the Tales of Jenny, Screech, and Violet (in that order).

@@themadcadder4847 well sure it is the letters but this is what it is actually - LD stands for "Lethal Dose". LD50 is the amount of a material, given all at once, which causes the death of 50% (one half) of a group of test animals.

"Ten Step Program..." may be a nod to addiction, but it's founding is basically the generic cookie cutter prescriptions to solve anything... that don't care whether the diagnosis is correct, just whether they have you as a customer... "What's he doin' there.." (at end) - He's wired with transmitters for a lapel mic and the guitar. The story is that they tried four times and produced a "single shot" video with multiple cameras to produce the visual illusion that there was 2 different people. Thanks for sharing this! I really liked your symbolism you pulled out of setting the guitar down. That was super cool... maybe a happy accident. When performers go lucid, that kind of shit just blooms up out of nowhere... No idea if it was intentional.
