There were 1.6 million in attendance. The helicopter flew over to put a fine mist of water to cool the audience down, it was a hot day. The troops you saw were supposed to be providing security at the first outdoor festival in Russia after the collapse of the wall, with such a big audience. The first western bands to play, and they thought they needed the militia. Some of those troops when identified by the videos were punished for their behaviour, but the experience made up for it.

That number is a gross exaggeration as there have been many credible accounts of people and officials who attended that festival who estimated the crowds at any one time in attendance being closer to 800k...with at least double that number in total over the course of the festival, which is probably why people confuse the total # over the course of the event with the largest # at any one time.

I was there as a representative of Amnesty International at the time and I personally took a head count of everyone over the course of the performance and there was really only 17 people there including the band. The Reagan Administration paid CIA operatives in Moscow to strategically place mirrors around Red Square to make it look like there were thousands there. I can finally talk about this top secret operation as it has been declassified after 30 years. My story is true because it is now on the internet so you have to believe it.

For context, this was a free concert in an airfield near Moscow in the fall of1991... AC/DC was the headliner, while Metallica and Pantera opened. This was in the aftermath of the attempted coup in 1991... Russia's then-president Yeltsin organized the show to thank the youth. Metallica had just released their self-titled 5th album (often called the 'black' album) and the single 'Enter Sandman' was blowing up on MTV and radio all over the world... the album already went #1 in the US, and their fanbase multiplied overnight that year as they went on tour. That record had 5 singles total, went to sell over 16 million copies in the US to date... Metallica spent 1991 to 1994 touring that record.

Metallica are very diverse as a metal band, and they have such a polarized fanbase... many loved the early records, while others prefer later albums... Their popularity globally was built by touring relentlessly and connecting w/ their fanbase. The band was formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, California, when James Hetfield met the Danish Lars Ulrich in their late teens... Lars wanted to play drums, James played guitar. After recording a demo in '81 which James did vocals on, they hired bassist Ron McGovney and lead guitarist Dave Mustaine to play local gigs in 1982 w/ James Hetfield on guitar & vocals, Lars Ulrich on drums, and finished a demo tape of original songs that played heavy metal faster and more intensely than bands of the day... That new sound was dubbed 'Thrash metal'. In 1983, the band moved to San Franciso and Cliff Burton (bass) joined and taught the band all he knew about songwriting and helped progress them musically. They were offered to record in New York that year, but once they got there... Dave Mustaine was fired and replaced by Kirk Hammett on lead guitar... They recorded their debut album "Kill 'em all" w/ Hammett playing Mustaine's parts. It was released in late '83 as Metallica began touring actively. Dave Mustaine returned to L.A. and formed his own band Megadeth, which found success by 1985. Metallica kept busy writing and recording... releasing 2nd album 'Ride the Lightning' in late 1984, and then 3rd album 'Master of Puppets' in early 1986... the band toured the US and Europe at a frantic pace, but then tragedy struck. In the fall of 1986, Metallica's tour bus crashed in Sweden and killed bassist Cliff Burton... The tour was completed w/ new bassist Jason Newsted joining Metallica. Creative conflicts making the 4th album 'And justice for all' (1988) affected the overall sound of the record, but it became a platinum hit faster than 'Master of Puppets'... The band filmed their first music video 'One' in 1989 and launched their first headlining tour that year. Making the 5th self-titled 'black' album took a year, but became their biggest career record, selling 16x platinum in the US alone, their first #1 album. Touring into 1994, Metallica took a break before releasing new music in 1996... 2 albums worth of music was recorded. The first album 'Load' (1996) was a shock, because Metallica had cut their hair and toned down their sound to a 90's rock style... but the record still sold well, followed by the next album 'Reload' (1997)... and then an all-covers 2CD release 'Garage Inc' (1998)... Metallica played live w/ a full orchestra in 1999 and released that show as the 2 CD live 'S&M' album... and then the soundtrack single 'I disappear' in 2000. In early 2001, longtime bassist Jason Newsted left Metallica. Sessions for a new album proved disastrous as Metallica tried to return to their thrash metal sound for the 2003 album 'St. Anger'... but Newsted exit, James stint in rehab, and the band's chaos led to a very disorganized album, which became their poorest seller to date, despite charting at #1... Robert Trujillo (bass) joined in '03 for the tour and became a member. 'Death Magnetic' (2008) was a better record and charted at #1 and did somewhat better. Metallica spent more time on the road than in the studio for the next 2 decades... 'Hardwired to self-destruct' (2016) was a 2 CD studio album and did very well in the digital age. A new Metallica album is still "work in progress"...

Don't forget, the album Master of Puppets is the only heavy metal album that has been added to the Library of Congress as being culturally significant enough to be preserved for all time. Also, Metallica is the only band in history to have played a concert on all 7 continents of the world, and to have done all 7 within 1 year.

The music before the band comes on the stage is "The Ecstasy of Gold", one of the western compositions that most represent the genius of Ennio Morricone. "According to various sources (the exact figure cannot be given, because the entrance was free), on Saturday, from 300 to 400 thousand people visited the airfield in Tushino. They did not reach the Guinness Book of Records (while the record for attendance of the free Jean-Michel Jarre show in 1989 in Paris, which was attended by 1 million 300 thousand spectators, is held), but maybe this is for the best." Congratulations on surpassing 50,000 subscribers! and wishing you the best for more. I would like for you to check out the rock group The Warning three young ladies with a ton of talent they do a cover of Metallica at a young age and now they have a video/concert were they do their take on enter sandman they are now in their 18, 20 and 23 years of age and are touring the world. It would be fabulous to see your reaction to them, They have a lot of fans. I have recently discovered them due to one of your subscribers comment on them. They have opened for the group Muse (one of their favorite bands) and have also opened for Hallestorm. So it would be great if you did a reaction when they were kids and one of the present day concerts/videos. Thank you and keep growing the channel!
