'Beste Zangers' is a celebration of music. Every season they feature a number of established singers, from wholly different backgrounds and genres, and every episode one singer is in the spotlight. The viewer learns about who they are and their background, while the other singers cover a song from that singer, or - like here - one that's very special to them. The "Beste Zangers" goldmine is a treasure trove of all things Floor. I'll try to keep this short (failed, obviously..) and post a follow-up with all the necessary links. So this is about songs that were performed by Floor during the legendary 2019 edition of the Dutch TV show, "Beste Zangers". In English, this translates into "Best Singers" but it can also be taken as "Dear Singers", as in a written invitation. That's what the show is about. No competition or anything. Just accomplished singers gathered together in an intimate setting far from home (this was filmed on Ibiza, if I'm not mistaken). Each episode is dedicated to one of the singers. The others perform songs that have a special meaning for the singer at the centre of attention. What's so nice abt Floor in that show was that most of the other singers didn't know her. She was that "metal chick" and not well known in the mainstream. Most of the Dutch television audience didn't know much about her either. That was about to change dramatically. In short, she blew all of them away, singing in German, Dutch, English and Spanish. From the get-go, she set the bar so high that the others stepped up their game and in turn delivered stellar performances when they sang to Floor (and were incredibly nervous). Special mention in this respect: Emma Heesters (a KZread singer) who sang Floor's song "Strong" to Floor (who had written it for her mother who suffers from chronic RA). Tissues handy for that one! When doing reactions as a non-Dutchie, it's best to go with the English subbed versions. These versions include the lovely before/after banter which provides some very useful & fun context to the songs. The official versions (by broadcaster AVRO/TROS) I would not recommend, since they miss the before/after and also tend to get blocked increasingly (which luckily in this case didn't apply). Nice Reaction! Floor did this show because of the older gentleman (Henk Poort) sitting on the couch signed up to be on it. He is a Classically Trained singer and played the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera in The Netherlands and Floor saw him sing the famous song from that Musical on TV when she was a young girl and yes, they do a duet on this show of that song from The Phantom. A must watch!

I believe Floor has said she feels quite a bit more comfortable in the huge stadium, than singing in such an intimate setting. The level of her performances across the range of styles she's capable of, it's honestly super-human. She's managing to get such unbelievable clarity, and that beautiful tone while very actively restraining her voice.

If you dive into the TV show Beste Zangers you'll enjoy the context of this and her other performances. With "Shallow", Floor did her rendition by "keeping the song small." I think she made the song more intimate and interesting in doing so.

As a follow up to this I would suggest watching her perform Alone by Heart, she sings it as well as if not better than Anne Wilson, which is saying a lot about her talent and performance!

I think fnglert already explained what the Dutch TV show "Beste Zangers" is. To add to that. Participants get a list of important songs to the other participants 6 months prior. They choose a song for each and choose one duet with another participant for the last show of the season (in this season Floor and Henk doing Phantom of the Opera). But also the duet Henk and Emma Heesters whom Floor is singing "Shallow" for was brilliant. Participants must come to a resort (this time a tent in Ibiza) alone, without family and managers. They stay together for 10 days to form a bond with each other and do some final repetitions. They are encoraged to sing out of their normal style (so Floor doing this pop song, and Henk as an opera singer did disturbed with a gritty voice f.e.). Most importantly, it is not a competition. And you were right. Floor was asked in the show if she liked this small group more than a big audience, and she said she liked big audiences more. The show has deep interviews in between songs, where many emotional moments occur. They all have some mental baggage and they all express that in their art somehow. Final note: Floor did not want to participate initially, until she heard that Henk Poort was in it. Floor adores him since her teens as a singer. She immediately changed her mind and said YES! With stunning results.

Great choice. Floor sings to each of the other six singers in English, German, Dutch and Spanish. And so much more on her KZread channel. Of course there are also her performances with After Forever who she joined at 16, ReVamp, her own band, Northward, another project. Plus guesting with Evergrey, Soilwork, Ayreon, Space One, Avantasia, and others. Have fun. LOL.

Its funny that you mention singing in front of a small group of people. They asked Floor on one of the episodes if she would rather be in this setting or a stadium and she preferred the stadium too.

Anything from the 2019 season of Beste Zangers is worth watching. Watch Floor's songs, of course, but also watch the performances by all of the other singers on the couch. They're all exceptional.

A great nightwish ballad is "Sleeping sun" (Live In Tampere) where you can also hear a softer version of her singing. Also from the same show "Beste Zangers" her duet of "fantom of the opera" is a must hear I think. A heavier song is Wish I Had an Angel (Wacken 2013) where you can hear her sing together with the bassist and their voices blend sooo well together. Having said that the list of great songs is endless...

The "Beste Sangers" show is a good opportunity to see Floor sing different kinds of music. Next to "Shallow" I recomment you to have a look at "The phantom of the opera" with Henk Port and "I don't know a thing about love" from the same show. "Beste Zangers" is a Dutch program, very cool, and consists in presenting other, well-known singers, their own songs or interpretations of "their" achievements. This is not a competition, you don't win anything (apart from praise and appreciation of your own work). I recommend watching the entire issue (season), 2019 (Floor Jansen). 2021 (Anneke Van Giersbergen, mother of Dutch-dark-vocal) - btw. I recommend "Strange Machines", The Gathering (Anneke), live '96, Pinkpop.

I do love listening to Floor live, which I consider this performance to be albeit a smaller audience. She released several singles from her new album as music videos but there are live performances out there which are so much more organic that I recommend you seek out to react to. But while I'll post you some links in a bit to make it easier to find, my request is from a solo show in Amsterdam in the fall of 2021 which can be found as a playlist on her channel, and the song title is Slow, Love, Slow that is delivered with a jazzy take to it.

You have to watch also other performances of Best Zangers. I would recommend Floor Jansen and Henk Poort with Phantom of the Opera. Also Henk Poort with Sound of Silence. Have you ever heard of Aurora a norwegian singer. She is amazing too with her very own style of singing and performing. I suggest to listen first to "Murder Song" and "Runaway" performed at the Nobel Price celebrations 2015.

The show takes 7 singers from different genres and put them together. Each singer has a list of songs that is special for him/her and that can be an own song or a song with a special memory. In each episode one of them is placed central and others sing a song from his/her list and there is talk about life experiences and why the song is so special. Because songs and the different singers do not always fall together so singers have to change songs to their own comfort zone or step out of their musical comfort zone. The 8th (and last) episode is the duet episode where each singer have to chose a partner to sing a duet. Floor did on this show an epic version of phantom of the opera with the actual Dutch phantom Henk Poort. Henk did it but with one condition, to play the song as well with Nightwish and so he recently did.

I can recommend every performance of Floor in the "Beste Zangers" there are KZread videos with intro with English subtitles so you understand why she chose that particular song.

The show's presenter asked her: - " Do you prefer to be in a stadium or just so very intimate for us ? - Floor: "Then, give me that stadium !" It was also pretty difficult for her to sing facing only few people. 😊

Floor is a Goddess.

This is a wonderful show. Not a competition. Floor does not want to copy or imitate Lady Gaga. Too much respect, and wanted to do it in a different way.
