They are a relatively loose conglomerate of musicians centered around the bassist and composer Michael League. They have other regular players but will often rotate musicians in and out, as in the case of this album. The drummer (Larnell Lewis) sat in at the last minute, and learned all but a couple of the songs on a long flight to the session. These were the recording sessions for their album We Like It Here, and yes the audience is getting the master mix from the soundboard into their headphones. Try What About Me and Outlier from this same album.

29 million views? How come KZread's only showing my personal views. So, to blow your minds a little bit more, the Drummer, Larnell Lewis, was a last minute stand-in for the normal drummer. He learned all the songs on a flight from Canada to Amsterdam, arrived the morning of the first live recording (I think they recorded 4 days in a row). Recommend Sleeper and Shofukan from the same session (we Like It here), but all the songs are good. Outlier too. Sleeper though as Sean Martin (the one who stood up here) expresses his soul through a hosepipe!

I’m a firm believer that 2 million people have seen this video, but half of us have watched it 28 times. I, along with you, am in the better half.

THEY ARE FIRE!!!!! Do What About Me? next. The drummer and guitarist go OFF! The drummer was a last minute replacement and learned the project on a flight from Canada to Amsterdam or somewhere over there.

A couple points not covered in the comments: 1. The audience is listening to ‘Silent Disco’ bluetooth headphones getting what is coming out of the nain mixing board. 2. This song is in 5/4…. the verse is in a slow 5, and the bridge/refrain is also in 5, but twice the speed… then the keyboard solo is in 4. 3. The drummer is Larnell Lewis, who was a last minute stand-in for their regular drummer. Larnell learned nearly the entire album recorded ON THE PLANE RIDE OVER. 4. The band itself was formed at North Texas University (formerly N. Texas State), a mecca for jazz musicians for decades…. they are currently based in Brooklyn. 5. The keyboard soloist is Corey Henry, a prodigy who has been playing keyboard since he was a baby… he has since left SP to form his own group. As far as other musicians/groups to check out, try a musician named Jacob Collier… he just dropped a new album, or a group called Dirty Loops, who recently released an album where they collaborated with another band led by Cory Wong.

“Don’t watch through us!” Bro we have to bc we’ve already experienced this song and loved it so much the first time we listened to it, that just a taste of someone else experiencing it for the first time brings that feeling back. Beautiful song, beautiful band.

Been listening to Snarky Puppy since they first broke on to KZread. Please see the Family Dinner albums. See everything. The mastermind is Michael League the bass player and he is an amazing person. Founded GroundUp records, and all the artists on the label are miracles in themselves. See it all. It’s an evolution in excellence that will be historical. Thank you so much for reacting to this particular piece. That’s Cory Henry on the solo, one of four genius keyboard players. The legendary but true story is the drummer was a stand in, and learned all the songs on the plane ride there and only had two hours rehearsal time. This session, which has plenty of other work spawned solo recording projects for most members of the band. It’s a great story. Watching your reactions reminded me exactly how I felt when I first saw it. Haven’t stopped talking about since. All the best, boys. You’ll never go back.

A couple of facts about this recording, the drummer Larnel Lewis was called just days before to do this and learned the songs on the plane on the way to Europe. The keyboard soloist is Corey Henry. Look up the videos he has playing B3 organ. You will be amazed!!!

Fellas, down the rabbit hole you go……Empire Central is just the latest (check out “Trinity” and “RL’s”, and “Bet”) amazing work from them but, you can check out all the songs previously mentioned by many in the comments already - this is a one of a kind band, and I haven’t heard anything from them that I don’t like or at least respect, from a pure musician-ship standpoint because they are all ‘Masters of their Instruments’.

Yep. What other people are saying. Do 'What about me?' next. The drummer, the incredible Larnell Lewis, destroys it. That guy is a KZread rabbit hole worth diving into. You should react to 'Larnell Lewis listens to a song once and plays it perfectly'. The guy listens through a drumless track, that he's never heard before, plans it out in his head without touching the kit, then plays along with like he wrote it.

If I’m Donald Fagen from Steely Dan seeing this for the first time, and my concert promoter just hired Snarky Puppy as my opening act, I’m starting to wonder if I’ve made a musically fatal mistake … 😂 Nothing can follow this.
