In this, the third and final episode of the series, it's time to unpack Kleveland's journey to stomping the Quad Cork, a trick that’s so difficult that only three other riders - Billy Morgan, Max Parrot and Yuki Kadono - have landed one.

i'm trying to understand, in the competition jump, i can barely check the horizontal axis rotations (the flips), the spins are clear, is it common to leave that slack since it's a really fast and messy bunch of rotations? basically there are 5 clear spins made with the body almost horizontal.

  • @MyUsernameIsTaken

A "cork" is an off-axis rotation, so it's not supposed to be 4 flips as much as 4 slightly off axis dips

Agreed. Try putting it in to slow motion at time of jump. I put it at a quarter speed. Counted maybe 2ish flips late, but mostly off axis spins early. At a certain point it happens so fast that I'm sure judges are probably just thinking, 'sure, I think'.

it's not 4 flips plus 5 rotations though.. It's a total of 5 rotations where the axis of rotation is not vertical from your head to your feet but at an angle to that. all those inverted tricks are like that. if I remember correctly, back in the days his trick would have been called a corkscrew 1800. E.g. a rodeo 540 is still just 540° of rotation but the axis shifts and is at one point through your hip side-to-side. 4 flips plus 5 rotations would be 1440° plus 1800° total = 3240° hahaha

Use any camera, just set your shot mode to continuous and hold down the button to take photos at equal times, then Adobe lightroom or photoshop can stitch them together automatically, or you can cut each person out and edit them in manually, if you prefer. There are a lot of tutorials for photoshop and lightroom if you end up getting it, you'll be able to find one pretty easily.

That’s cool and all but why not just build a jump like skiers that just flip and spin a bunch? Since this seems like the goal. I’ll take big mountain snowboarding any day. Put me on top of a mountain in Alaska with knee deep powder and I’ll show real style. They can have their perfectly groomed jumps.

Not even corked. Just a huge spin. Now billy Morgan's one? That's way more legit.

Impressive, but it’s not a quad; it’s rather a flat spin 1800 @ an angle. He doesn’t flip in a vertical axis at all (I.e. - his head doesn’t go onto both sides of the board, just stays behind the board), and only spins in a horizontal axis. Watch from 4:34 @ 1/4 speed & count the rotations Watch Billy Morgan’s quad, that’s a true quad 1800 (search for it here on KZread) - And you’ll see what I mean about his head being on both sides of the board. In Billy’s case, he spins in *both* a vertical (quad) and horizontal (1800) axis. Whereas Marcus is only spinning in the horizontal axis (1800) - so this trick should technically just be called say a “corked 1800”. Marcus actually confirms the _true_ definition of a quad @ 1:24 Getting kinda annoyed how the leading lights in Snowboarding seem to fail with basic maths lol. I even saw commentators labelling Max Parrot’s quad Underflip as a “quad Underflip 1620”! No, it’s a quad Underflip 180, he doesn’t have any horizontal rotation, except for switching the foot he lands on (so a 180)! 😂
