FIRST project on our new LAND - clearing the road! | 40 acres in Vermont

Our first project on our newly acquired 40 acres of land in Vermont was to clear the existing logging trail so that we can drive on it with our truck. This means a new tool day and learning how to use a pole saw and a chainsaw!

    I saw oneof those pole saws by coincidence today at the local Restore. Probably work with a new battery. I don't need it. I notice it is fairly heavy, due to leverage of course. i just use a folding ladder and a reciprocating saw, for the limited limbing I do to create a space below for fire safety. In Vermont no wildfire problem. I lived in Vermont for 30 years and although not knowledgable about property ownership issues, I never heard that Vermont soil was impermeable. What I knew about the perc test was in connection with large developments, which sometimes had a problem. Assuming your land is not all rock, or swamp it is hard to believe you need to pump your sewage up. I think they are giving you s snow job. (No, snow job is not a Vermont expression--it just means smoke & mirrors). Considering you started with a wish to avoid building codes altogether, I personally would be offended to have the very choice of the house site dictated by circumstances beyond my control. Or otherwise, big Shekels. ut on the other hand, contractors are great when they are good. I had a septic system installed, in California, by the best contractor locally ( Levelled the trenches with laser precision) but that was only possible because it was 2009. ) I am even as we speak awaiting another downturn in the credit economy. The same contractor now is still friendly but too busy for me. I am low income. The state and the county make much of the their work and of course commercial development which--unlike Vermont-- proceeds apace. What I can see for sure is you need a whole lot more town meeting and meeting the local town people. I just hate to see you get marketed a commercial grade of Vermont. Please, at least do not judge- until you get clear of the commercial interests. But this is all retrospective. And by now, you two ARE the culture, as a result of your video. Another point I meant to make is that places with no zoning also might tend to attract toxic extremists. It is not good to be in complicity with irresponsible neighbors, whose crimes descend into who knows where.? Ignorance itself.The dread mire of smalltown Hell.

    Those long handle pruners are called Loppers, I love mine and use them all the time. They make it so easy to cut branches. When I first bought my electric chain saw it swung close to my leg and it was a miracle it didn't get any of my flesh. From that point on I took better safety precautions, used better angles to cut from but that was really scary. I did watch KZread videos to properly cut trees, logs and large branches but I don't recall any of them talking about safety of the body in detail. Luckily I didn't have to learn the hard way, you guys certainly did it correctly with the safety aspect and the path looks great!

    Thank you! We have absolutely fallen in love with VT and everyone has been so welcoming! We treated our work clothes with permethrin spray from REI and it seemed to really help. Wearing long sleeves and pants while doing hard work in the hot, sticky weather wasn't much fun, but it was better than thousands of mosquito bites!

    Us too! We've been trying to plan out how we can make best use of all the slash and trees that we've cleared so far as well as the stuff we'll have to clear for the driveway and house site. We don't have much use for firewood (the house itself will be all-electric, so it'll just be for outside use like campfires, etc) so we're looking at what can be milled, what can be used for wood chips (e.g. laying on the trails) and any other uses we can find!

    @@AdventurousWay Wood chippers are generally good for stuff smaller than about 3 inches in diameter. You can have a massive pile for footpaths from all you are trimming. A lot of folks will come get the firewood or you can sell it, just put up a sign with your number. 😃

  • @AdventurousWay

    @AdventurousWay

    @@Avscout that’s our thinking - maybe give away some firewood to the neighbors. For the chipper, there’s a rental place nearby that rents chippers that’ll take anything up to 15” diameter! I’m thinking things larger than 10” might be good for milling and less than that can be chipped for our trails. It’s gonna be a big pile!

  • @AdventurousWay

    @AdventurousWay

    Жыл бұрын

    I would highly recommend using ethanol free gas in a small engine like a gas-powered chainsaw. At least around here, that's not all that easy to find, and is only available in 93 octane premium gas - i.e. it's expensive and the nearest gas stations that sell it are a little way away. My truck is perfectly happy with regular 89 octane gas, so we don't run the same gas in the chainsaw as the truck. Obviously that's not an issue with our electric chainsaw which runs on regular Dewalt Flexvolt batteries that we can recharge in our RV using solar or our generator.

    It’s a very fair question! Ordinarily I wouldn’t, except there are loads of reviews of this chainsaw saying it likes to leak oil when left in storage, and I don’t want it leaking out in the back of my truck as we drive around. If I were just storing it on a shelf in my garage I probably wouldn’t bother.

    Buy a Granberg 12V chain sharpening tool to sharpen your chains and a Stihl hand file tool to dress the chains in the field. Buy an old Homelite XL 2 cycle gas chainsaw at a garage sale. You will be amazed at the performance difference between gas and electric. An old XL is small, light and cheap. The saw is not so powerful that you will be afraid to use it. If you use Amsoil synthetic 2 cycle oil you can reduce the gas to oil mix ratio if you don't like the smoky exhaust. I like the smoke.....it smells manly and keeps the mosquitoes away.
