First Peak

Спорт

ON THOSE CROWDED BLUEBIRD DAYS AT FIRST PEAK-a clean, pulsing north swell in the water, a gentle west wind kissing the wedging peak’s pencil-thin lips-you could hear a sound-pop pop pop pop-as sets approached the viper-pit pack, pinballing through the jetty’s pilings. The East Coast’s best surfers knew it well, heard it in their dreams. Ask Kelly Slater; he remembers. Or Jeff Crawford, if you can find him. Mike Tabeling probably heard it on his way out.
For nearly 40 years, Sebastian Inlet groomed more champion surfers than perhaps any wave on the planet, responsible for eight Pipe Masters wins, 16 world titles, and countless major East Coast, national, and World Championship event wins, not to mention dozens and dozens of local, underground, world-class surfers filling in the gaps. Then, in the early 2000s, repairs and renovations to the jetty caused the wave to disappear almost overnight. In its absence, Florida hasn’t produced a single World Tour surfer, let alone a world-title threat.
“I miss Sebastian, truly,” says Slater, First Peak’s prodigal son. “I’d do anything to bring it back to its glory.”

the best thing about Sebastian , for me, is that while everybody else ran up there to be "seen", I was catching wave after wave elsewhere. Longer waves, at all tides, going left and right, reconnecting waves from way out back to the inside. Thank goodness Sebastian was so highly thought-of; I was surfing, instead hassling/hustling and harassing others for waves...Thank you Sebasatian Inlet !!

I surfed all thru the 70's into 80's started late 60's another spot that was ruined by army corp was Vilano bch north jetty . Same scenario as Sebastian . I use to visit Sebastian a lot and was there many times when they said it was at its best , and Ive gotta tell you living on Vilano I saw it as good or better. A high tide break 2 hrs before and 2 hrs after, It had a big hollow left on a south swell left of the entrance , that broke outside all the way in and held really big waves well. Looked like a small pipe =, got many a long stand up deep barrel there. Also on the south side of inlet was a placed called Blowhole which was also a secret for most of the early and mid 70's til it was featured in surfer magazine with a guy named Barry Wolf riding some over head waves there, then the crowds showed up. Ft Pierce was another very good jetty break, north side jetty there too. Then there was New Smyrna but, it was no Vilano. Also south jetty of Mayport was another good spot on big north easters and still is today. Fun times not a care in the world just living to surf.

So damn sad to know that this epic spot is pretty much gone! As a Gulf Coast slop guy from Alabama, and a goofy foot, I remember the first time I took off at First Peak in the mid 70s and got pitched clean out of the lip into a free fall sand blasting! I'd never felt speed and power like that wave had!

Ah man. Hits so hard. The Inlet is where I learned how to surf. Beginning in 91 through 95 the inlet was my go to spot. Why surf anywhere else with a wave that good? I remember so vividly middle of July in 92 just a meager trade swell about 1-2 foot, but low tide first peak would transform that into a shred fest. Perfect wedging A frames that would connect through to second peak offering a ramp for radical maneuvers. It mesmerizing to watch first peak do its thing. I’ve traveled a good deal up and down both coasts and I have never found a spot that could do so much with so little. The vibe that place had in the early nineties was incredible. No internet, local shapers with store fronts, sunburns, bikinis, and that hot as hell sand that would melt the skin off the bottom of your feet in summer! It’s heartbreaking what it is today. The inlet was the heart and soul of the central coast. When it faded everything else faded right with it.

I grew up surfing in Florida in the early 80's ! It took me one session and three waves to crack the code at first peak ! First wave I was told to leave after getting pitched and getting a bloody nose from getting hit by my board ! Paddled bad out to them heckling me and saying they where all going to jump me if I tried taking off on another set ! I laughed and said " Hey man I'm from Captiva on the Gulf and I've never seen waves this good .......so go ahead because I can fight better than surf and even if you kick my ass........I'm still paddling back out and surfing ! "They kinda just laughed and said screw it this dude's nuts ! He's in " I'm pretty sure Matt K and David S and Bill Hartley and Sean S where part of the crew but they turned out to be pretty cool ! I had lots of friends in Florida that surfed but when I went to Sebastian it was usually by myself because of how bad the localism was there ! I got to surf first peak with a handful of locals that kept the crowds to an absolute minimum compared to anything after the 90's when it turned I to a zoo ! What's really funny is at the same time Captiva had a crew of about 10-15 locals that where as hardcore as anywhere in the Gulf of Mexico ! If you weren't from there .........you were surely going o be hassled in and out of the water and God help you if you ever dropped in on a local ...........it was a guaranteed beating and maybe a broken board too ! I don't remember one outsider ever dropping in on a local there and trying to come back ! Bunch of Crazy ass partying Florida boys that handled things ! Damn ..........I wish I could go back in time ! The locals I remember on Captiva are Big wave Dave, Aaron Brown ,Todd and Ryan Seal, the n word James,Big Mike (fat dude that could surf )Derek and Devin,Paul Fraley ,Pauly ,Rob Miller,Ronnie,Alex and no forgetting Peter Hayes ! I missed a few

Surfed this wave off and on, 74' to 77'. First peak was the best, you could drop behind the peak, get a quick tube, then bottom turn and do a nice top turn. Second peak was a left and right, when it got 2 to 3 overhead, first and second peak would connect, giving you a really nice open face right. Place use to get packed, so headed over to Spanish House...very sad to see what happened to that wave, typical Army Corp of Engineers(a bunch of no surf kooks)...

That’s sad, this is what’s happening in North County San Diego. Waves that used to be really good are no longer there. They destroyed warm waters. Ponto, my favorite spot, used to be good all year round and now it barely even breaks anymore. Oceanside is completely sandless, where it would almost always barrel is now just a giant hole and cobble stones. The only place that has decent waves is south side of the pier and the harbor. So now everyone and their mom surfs there and it gets really crowded.

Now I live in Port Orange and surf Ponce regularly,. While the ponce wedges are really fun on good days, it cannot hold a candle to true first peak. This video does not do it justice at all. On proper 4 ft days guys would be getting 75-100 yard barrels. Sebastian would suck out 3x harder than Ponce does on the best days. I really enjoy surfing Ponce and it might be one of the best waves in FL but the friendly vibe just kills it for me.

Sounds like they wanted to get rid of the surfers. on the west coast if a beach town wanted to get rid of the kids they just would put up “permit parking only” signs. Now you can only meter park and with that hardly anyone goes to the beaches that were once popular. Even the Country park is all meter parking. Seems like the plan was to change the jetty here & get rid of the surfers.
