FIRST PAGE in my new GREY sketchbook (Brush pen & Gouache) ✶ Long Sketchbook & Chat Session

Ойын-сауық

New sketchbook hype! After finishing my Hahnemuhle beige sketchbook, I knew I wanted to try their grey version.
Starting a sketchbook can sometimes be scary (fear of the blank page is real!) so I'll show you how I like to start my sketchbooks. I ended up playing with ink and then gouache. This is another long, chatty sketchbook session! Great for background noise or as a drawing/painting companion. #gouache

In response to "hang out mode" vs. "teacher mode," you are absolutely doing both! Watching you paint while you chat is totally a lesson in itself. In the meantime, listening to you talk about random things (and yes, periodically you throw in teaching moments by sharing what you are discovering or doing with your art at the moment) is so soothing. I'm also painting (a store front scene) as I listen and I'm so glad you can carry the conversation! lol! I feel like I'm getting to know you, which is a sweet time together (even though it's 98% one sided! Just our comments here to reach out that there are others in the world engaging with you!). But we are here! And hearing about where you live is especially wonderful to me-we took a trip to many areas of Scotland in 2009, and it's one of my favorite places to be... seeing it and hearing about it again is a perk of following your videos! Thanks for that! 🙂

I love the way you talk about the forest. I live in the forest in Michigan ugh at Lake Huron. My art studio sits right in the midst of it. I am fortunate to walk out the door and be there. It speaks to me and I lived in the Detroit area almost my entire life. I will never go back. And I also mix gouache and watercolor. Sometimes it’s just easier when I am out plein air painting, if I haven’t preserved whites or realize I want more lights but laid dark paint. I haven’t been much of a fan of hahnemuhle paper. I like 140lb. It is too light for me. But strathmore makes awesome toned books 140lb toned gray and beige. I love those. I don’t know if you can get them there. I also learned something new about taxes. I had no idea that you still had to file a zero tax return in the US when you’re not even living here. Ridiculous.

If you feel steange painting and talking, you could try doing a voice over later? Perhaps that would feee you a bit more pf the pressure of having to say something all the time. I really liked the coalt teal + yellow mix. It went well with the more fantasy colours of the sketch. It looked and sounded like you were having lots of fun. So was I, so thank you!!

Thank you for sharing your wonderful work with us, I actually really loved this video format. It was so relaxing and calm and gave a great insight into your process. I particularly enjoyed the inclusion of less realistic colours and was amazed at how well it works to give an ethereal feeling and doesn't feel out of place at all. It really worked so well that it gave it a feeling and shows us that it's OK to be more adventurous, and that evoking emotion is often more important than exact copying and gives a far better result. The colours combined with the freedom of the brush strokes really created something special and reminds us to not be afraid of experimenting, the results maybe happily surprising, adding that special touch that can only come from you. I've watched some of your older sketchbook posts and it's miraculous how far you've come and shows us all how hard work and being brave enough to try new things can propel our work beyond what we imagined. Thank you for being an inspiration and sharing your amazing gifts with us.

Hey Sarah! I've discovered I have yellow ochre naturally occurring in my area. I harvested a couple of pounds of it and washed out the roots and rocks and have powdered it. I bought some gum arabic, vegetable glycerin, and honey to make my own watercolor. My plan is to use one sketchbook that features the adventure of making the paint and then several paintings to follow. I'm really excited about this! Have you ever done any sketches with only one color? In the end your picture would be many different tones of one color

  • @SarahBurnsStudio

    @SarahBurnsStudio

Wow that's so cool! When I do monochrome paintings I tend to use a darker color. But yellow ochre is naturally opaque, so it might be really interesting on grey paper! But probably better on white paper to capture the brightness.

@@SarahBurnsStudio Great tip! I was wondering if I should use grey watercolor paper. Ok white paper it is! Yellow ochre can be heated to make a deep burgundy red. Then if I mixed small amounts of the red into the yellow I could get some dark orange. I think I see a picture being born!

If you like toned paper that’s not in a sketchbook, my favorite is Stonehenge archival Kraft paper. I love 3x5 sketchbooks, probably my favorite size. I started using the Hahnemule zig zag for certain projects, to replace the Moleskine Japanese Albums. Though I really wish I could find an accordion sketchbook with as many pages as the Moleskine, but with watercolor paper. I may have to end up making it myself. I may have to try this little Hahnemule though.

Oh, that is a darn sweet little sketchbook, I probably wouldn't gravitate towards grey paper, though. And that's even though I really enjoy grey paints and pens 😅. Love the little shroomies 🥰 That's some real exciting news about that album cover! We got some real warm weather over the past weeks here in Germany :) I still - and that even though we're 1 year into that stupid pandemic and we're probably all all kinds of fed up with the repercussions and rules - would want our politicians to be stricter about them. We're right in on that third wave, the numbers are on the rise again and some people really aren't acting any wiser or more responsibly than they did in the first one which just drives me BONKERS. Ha, good thing those hairdressers are my least concern, I never liked going there anyway and my hair soooo conveniently grows real slow, so I didn't really miss going. What I miss though, is visiting my favourite arts/craft store on a whim, hunt record stores and book shops for new stuff that I wouldn't just find browsing the internet (because I totally get drawn in by random CD covers of bands that I often don't know or wouldn't seek out specifically and discover new stuff that way. Same with books :)) and definitely going on concerts, seeing musicals or just visit museums and stuff...

My home town got a lot of older half-timbered houses, cute little alleys and a small river meandering through, so there's always something nice and new to discover out in the open - even for a 30 year old that only ever has lived in said town :D Right now all the daffodils, tulips, snowballs, crocuses, hyacinths and other early blooming flowers are popping up, so there's beautiful, vibrant colours just about everywhere 🥰 And then the lighting is just gorgeous at this time of year, soft and warm, not as harsh as at others. If I could just sit down and paint, draw or just read and drink a cup of tea, cocoa or coffee instead of driving to work every morning, I'd probably just do that 😅

@Jasmine Shelby I haven't used those yet, but they sound like an interesting option :). I mostly reach for grey alcohol markers (don't even need to be expensive ones - most of mine are a hodgepodge mix of cheap storebought ones, like from Action, Sostrene Grene or Flying Tiger or cheap ones from Amazon like TouchNew or Ohuhu. You don't need expensive Promarkers or Copics to create stuff and have fun even though there's enough gate-keeping artists that suggest otherwise), I studied architecture and drawing/sketching with black india ink pens like the Pitt Pens from Faber-Castell or the ever present Copics and Microns and shading with grey hues is like a basic tool for designing and still like a comfort medium for me.I mostly use fineliner pens (as that is easiest for a lefty like me), but have also dabbled around with dip pens already and have an Chinese inkstone lying somewhere, too, so trying new inks is definitely right up my alley :)

  • @LunaBianca1805

@Jasmine Shelby Huh, that's hard to hear :( My home area's pretty rural, so it's hard to imagine it without farmers' fields, the Ems and smaller first's in the vicinity. In Germany, I'd always suggest people to stay in youth hostels. They're usually pretty cheap to stay at, are clean if a bit basic, are in popular cities and have a good connection to public transportation, one doesn't have to worry about, getting food as that is already included and they're accommodations are often made so that people with disabilities can stay at them as well - but I obviously don't know how the situation is in France :/ Yes, I totally love Sarah's outdoor footage, too. Scotland seems like a real gorgeous place and I'd love to visit that one day. I wonder if your French regions like Normandie, Bretagne or Hauts-de-France would have a similar appeal? As an outsider I'd totally imagine they'd be similar to the Scottish coastline areas and they're closer by, so... Other than that, I guess, we're all stuck inside at the moment. Why not watch nature documentaries together? That's like travelling without actually leaving home isn't it? I'm lately discovering documentaries on Arte which is a French/German TV station and they're here on KZread as well. That or BBC, which has some real nice ones, too. And they're often openly accessible :)

@Jasmine Shelby The TouchNew work on the same colour scheme as the Shinhan Touch Twin markers and for all that I know they sell refills as well :). Definitely see where you're going with ecological concerns though , craft and art materials and especially these markers aren't exactly super eco-friendly. I'd wish more of the manufacturers would sell refills and exchange nibs :/ Oh, yeah, that's sooo annoying when they just dry up. Lucky me that our area is usually pretty moderate in temperature and climate, so that's at least one factor crossed out that usually would accelerate mine drying out on me ^^' Did you try to revive yours before throwing them out? Regular felttip pens can be revived with some drops of vinegar. Maybe that would work with some rubbing alcohol for markers as well? Am a bit of a cheap shit when it comes to my art supplies and pretty hesitant to just throw them away, so I'd probably try that first ;)

You can check her supplies in the description, but I believe it is the Pentel Brush pen. They come filled or re-fillable options.

No, I made a post about this, I had to postpone the live stream because I have an ear infection and needed to go to the doctor/get medicine and now resting. Sorry 😣
