First or Second Conditional? English Grammar Practice

Wondering when to use first and second conditional in English? Learn with me and hang around for the Conditionals Quiz at the end!
The 1st Conditional:
We use it to talk about things that are POSSIBLE in the future and have a LIKELY chance of happening!
IF + present simple, WILL + bare infinitive verb
EG: If I miss the bus, I will take a taxi.
The 2nd Conditional:
Use it to talk about IMPOSSIBLE present situations and UNLIKELY future situations
IF + past simple, WOULD + bare infinitive verb
EG: If I missed the bus, I would take a taxi.
Stick about for the QUIZ at the end of the lesson to practice what you learn!

I was missing my favourite, prettiest teacher!! If it doesn't rain soon, the lake will dry up!!. If I watch Emma's videos, I am going to be a better teacher. I have a question: In the first conditional, can we combine present + present? I am in America and I was taught at the University it's possible!!!

Thanks for practicing with me Jose! Great examples. present + present is the Zero Conditional. Use it to talk about facts. For example, "If it rains a lot, the river rises."

Hello Emma! Will you accept a new student? Yes, here I am. Thank you so much for your wonderful presentation! I like it very much, especially your gesture!! Awesome!! Being an African I struggle often times with my English grammar through I studied it from elementary to college level. When I found your lessons on KZread I can’t tell you how much I was excited - I hope you will make me a good student. Here are my answers for your quizzes Situation 1 2nd Conditional If I got a promotion at my work I would bought a new car. Situation 2 1st Conditional If I cook a spicy food for dinner my child will not eat it. Situation 3 2nd Conditional If my friend asked me to take care their dog while they’re on holidays I would feel horrible if it ran away. Situation 4 2nd Conditional If I ran out of coffee I knew what would actually happened.

Your second sentence does not use the type two conditional. It is called a Mixed conditional sentence because you used the Past perfect simple tense ( had talked...) with the Present simple as a result of the past ( would be able to afford...)

Jyothi Sithara As long as he finishes his homework, he can go out to play. If he does not finish his homework, he cannot go out to play. Both sentences mean the same idea. They are examples of “Zero type conditionals” where the first part of the sentence ( If he does not finish...) is in the Present Simple and the second part ( he cannot go out ) is also in the Present Simple. They are not 1st nor 2nd type Conditionals. First uses a form of Will, whilst Second uses Would. In the examples you can see that there are both made up without the use of the auxiliary verbs Would or Will. There are also other exceptions you need to study as well...

Jyothi Sithara As long as he finishes his homework, he can go out to play is a First conditional type sentence. You can use the “If clause” here as well and say: If he does not finish his homework, he cannot go out to play. It is the same idea. As long as you write things down, you will be able to revise ( and keep. record of...) them. If you do not write things down, you will not be able to revise or keep a record of things.
