Your mention of the trains in Tokyo indicating which cars are at various means of egress and transfer for the next platform reminds me that there are also diagrams on some platforms in Tokyo which show the same thing for every station on the line in a given direction as well as approximately how long it will take to get to each station. It was super handy! Having named/numbered exits (also a feature I noticed in Hong Kong) also made wayfinding easier. It's the sort of thing I learned to memorize for my usual stations on the TTC, and I feel it could really help wayfinding for those who aren't regulars to a particular line or station, so it would be great to see more of it closer to home!

I imagine London might not want to show this information as otherwise passengers in trains & platforms would crowd around the section nearer to lifts/escalators/stairs at platforms while the other sections are underutilized
The problem with separated bench seating is that if you're larger than the designed width, you're either locked out of the majority of the seating on the train, or your ride is going to be really uncomfortable. Personally, I think the TTC's approach of having distinct seats without armrests balances accessibility with concerns about people taking up way too much space for no reason.

Very neat stuff. Also about the stuff you'd like to see with LCD screens, we did actually have screens on the S trains in Copenhagen for many years, I think they were active for like from 2011 to 2020. They featured ads scrolling through them, as well as PSA's and live traffic info like the status of the other S train lines, whether they were running fine or not, having engineering works, when the rush hour lines would start running, and so on. And when pulling into stations it would show you real time info of the next departures with buses and regional rail services. Heck when they were first introduced they actually played sound from the ads, which passengers reacted very harshly to, and so it was changed quickly. But after new year 2020 the screens were decomissioned. I assume that DSB found them too expensive to operate or troublesome to keep around, I did notice prior to it that it wasn't uncommon for screens to be glitched out or completely black. Nowadays all the screens are removed which is a big shame, the whole thing was legitimately really useful. And the Metro of course has nothing on it apart from some old school dot matrix signs telling you what the next station is and which service you're on. The buses though feature LCD screens as standard with all the mod cons. Usually like in the Ontario line renderings with 2 screens, with route info on the left and ads on the right. Heck the highest priority services even feature a live horizontal route map on LCD screens above the windows along the length of the vehicle between the middle door and the drivers compartment.

And I must say that I really enjoy watching them and kudos to you! Definitely, Toronto is a rapidly-changing dynamic and highly sophisticated city. Yo this looks so cool! Coming from Waterloo, I really appreciate not having a bunch of ads on transit. It isn't 0 ads but it's very minimal. I like the LCD screens, for public service, but the amount of ad space I think is unhealthy unless highly regulated. I also think the LCD displays give a really cool opportunity for public art of some sort. To be honest, I'm not too sure about having the capacity for just 5 cars in new system based in such a major city that's also set to grow, even if we consider the 90sec headway between trains. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd really have expected an intended capacity for 6 to 8 cars as it's something you would see in a few other major cities like Toronto.

It would be so amazing if American cities actually bothered to build rapid transit lines that are genuinely up-to-date technologically like the Ontario Line with its automation, platform screen doors, beautiful new trains, and extremely high frequency. But it always feels like US cities actively ignore trends in the rest of the world, hence why we get all these LRT and BRT-lite projects and when a new rapid transit metro line is actually constructed, it almost always uses incredibly out-of-date technology. Toronto residents should be proud of this amazing project and all the other awesome transit projects being constructed - especially GO Transit's creation of a genuinely good regional rail network!

Also, multiple screens means you can leave multiple languages up for long enough for people to actually read them. It's almost worse having 2s to read the French version than not having it at all. And then you're trying to work out hirigana displayed 8 pixels high on a scrolling LED display. The joy of Sydney with 18 written languages in common use.

Nice Video, I have an idea for a video that would be about the Urban Trains of Lisbon. Keep the great work.
Very cool! I was just in Toronto last month down at the Coca-Cola Coliseum, and getting to and from the venue wasn't as smooth as it could have been. Either getting on the Go Train on the way there, or packing onto the street car or bus with 100 people at 11pm to get back to Union, a subway on that line would have made those trips so much nicer.
11:15 about armrests: I remember seeing alot of anti-homeless infrasttructure in and around the London Underground when I visited this past summer. Benches that were purposefuly narrow, uncomfortable as possible, and had armrests at short intervals. Mildly uncomfortable for the average passenger, downright dangerous for a homeless person who will need to find somewhere else to sleep. Homeless folks in Toronto often take refuge on public transit--having a warm and relatively safe place to sleep or just exist for cheap/free is valuable to people without access to adequate shelter, especially in Canadian winter. Obviously there are things we should be doing for the unhoused to make access to shelter more accessible, but in the meantime I think it would be good to use solutions that don't exclude homeless people from existing on public transit. Ther could be armrests, just spaced somewhat far apart. As well, the seats could always be cloth covered in cloth so as to increase friction between is and the rider so that ppl aren't slisinf around.
My great grandchildren will love it!

We'll be lucky to see this project completed in a decade or so with our inept and corrupt our construction companies are. Whether they do it on purpose or not its astounding how they can constantly go over time and budget and be rarely if ever held accountable for doing so. And on top of all the delays and cost overruns its not like they consistently build top notch stuff either. Say what you want about the Chinese, but they get things done pretty quick and when it comes to major projects they do it with good quality as well mostly. If only in Canada we could be more like them in that regard.
Those trains do look nice and a nice livery would make then unique and special. This made me think about the new trains for my city (Indore, India population 3.2million ) which would be made by Alstom for our first metro line (33.5 km). Nobody has released any design renderings till now so we will see. The wait might not be that long though as they want to start trial runs by September 23. From what is released, Our trains will be 3 car long with 4 doors per side per car, powered by 750V DC third rail, compatible with CBTC signalling system for GOA 4 to allow unattended train operations, full digital wayfinding, plug sockets, dedicated wheelchair and bicycle storage, regenerative breaking, advanced air conditioning (i couldn't tell you what that means) and so on. What we will not get is onboard wifi which is a bummer. And based on Alstom's designs I am confident we will get a good looking beast.

I agree, its about time. I remember taking 2 trains & two buses just to get to uni, it took me about 2 hours from each end & the ride on them was very congested at times, bus & train timings weren't as accurate or cared for much & the newspaper litter got me everytime.
The reason why there stains doesn't need a font emergency exit is that if the system has walkways installed on the side throughout the system, it is not expected by the transportation authorities. That's according to my knowledge.
I am so excited for this 🎉 especially as an east ender it is going to make trips so much easier and decongest the 2 train. Im wondering if you’ve ever done a video about San Francisco Muni (I’ve seen the BART videos!)? Considering that Central Subway just opened (it looks BEAUTIFUL), im wondering what your thoughts on the many pros and cons of that system are. Love your channel!!
coincidentally, san francisco just opened their new central subway

12:06 Yes this system is very useful. I am very happy to have it on the M14 in Paris, the M11 and M4 (not all trains) will have it too, since they will use the same equipment, the Mp14 (2023 for of them). GPE lines too
I think the best compromise between bench style seating and individual armwrest-separated seating is a series of interconnected yet individual seats, like the older B division cars in NYC. They provide the flexibility of open seating, but also a clear delineation of how many spots there’s supposed to be. Especially with differing body types and small children, armwrests might aren’t really the most conveinent design choice.
I can't wait for my great- grandchildren to ride this in 2123!

I really like the aesthetics of this new train. The seating layout looks quite sensible actually. I broadly agree about your views on digital wayfinding, especially those "where is the exit?" diagrams in Tokyo (those would be SO useful to avoid people stepping out onto the platform and looking around for the Way Out arrow), but I'm not so sure about digital ads on trains. As with everything, it would depend on implementation, but having animated ads with potentially large amounts of bright flashing lights going off inside the cars would be so annoying and honestly a bit stressful. When I commuted on the district line a few years ago, I often wanted to have a little snooze and the thought of bright screens trying to flash at me would make me avoid the line and take a different route altogether!

On the other hand Singapore's newest station platforms no longer tell you which exits are served by escalators at each end of the platform, leaving you to go up from platform to ticket concourse level from either end's escalators, then revealing to you there if your exit is at the same or opposite end of the station/platform. Maybe the authorities were worried that otherwise, the escalators at the end of the platform with the busier exit would get overcrowded while the other escalators would be underutilized
The rocket trains also have hand strap handles yellow ones
Well done
I think the problem with big LCD screens, other than poor reliability, is that if they do get used for both ads and information they will also get ignored. They're also irritating imho: much prefer a paper ad to visually loud moving ones, but then I don't want to be advertised to.
@fraserwilson249
Жыл бұрын
Agreed, if I'm going to be advertised to at least don't make it so bright and distracting (although of course that's the point). I think one LCD screen over the doors would be enough.
LCD displays could also eliminate ads for long-expired events.
I love how platform screen doors are becoming more commonplace in newer metros. There's been too many instances of people being pushed into the train tracks like what happened 7 months ago in Toronto, or people being idiots like that boy who got his arm ripped off in New York..
If this system works even half as well as the Sydney Metro it’s sure to be a winner. The metro searing is bench style on either side right through and works well, we also run much longer carriage sets that run every four minutes in peak and every ten out of peak.
i am looking forward to it ❤
I don't tink that the plug doors will be a particularly big issue given that many, many european metro and rail systems use them and as far as i know every stadler train made in the last 20 years.
The AS2014 in the Santiago Metro use 1500v. The NS74, NS88, NS93, NS04, NS07 and AS02 use 750v in the Santiago Metro.
These are bold trains. I hope the renderings reflect the actual trains as much as possible, but I won't hold my breath.
The size of the front window is something I find kinda important. The newest stock on the line 14 in Paris is amazing, I love them, but their windows are far smaller than the older stock. More importantly, The new windows are too high up for some children to reach!! Although I'm not a fan of the ad screens. In the Philippines we have just started implementing/retrofitting digital wayfinding and video advertisements a few years ago. Though still terribly inconsistent since not all of our lines has it and some trains didn't receive it (LRT 1 1st Gen). The incoming rolling stock for LRT 1 is not equipped with anything while the incoming NSCR rolling stock only has digital wayfinding on the doors but terribly small. They should've made it a standard that all of our incoming rolling stock should have these features. The brand new (and not yet in passenger service) subway cars in NYC that have bigger doors for easier boarding, but the trade off is the windows in between the doors are tiny. I wish they went with plug doors so there isn’t the need to shrink the window to fit the doors and their mechanism inside the walls.
10:57 me myself as a transit nerd from Germany, I never thought of that a mass transit system shows how other services operate, since typically station are not far apart so you need to spreed information kind of fast

10:57 we actually have these on the DC Metro. It's not super helpful here though because there aren't many alternative routes you can take either way lol but I can see how it would be helpful. One thing that caught my eye in the images of the renderings and actual videos of the interiors of various trains is the apparent difference in color temperature of the lighting. In this day and age of LED lighting, possibilities offered by more advanced interior lighting as exemplified in the airline industry by the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, is lighting that can change color with the time of day or part of the flight. I think it would be an interesting implementation to have lighting that is different between daytime and nighttime, perhaps even change from early morning through midday into late afternoon. Do you think that would be a practical or even interesting idea? I believe it would add an element of interest that would be fun and maybe even draw a few more riders just because of the experience. Perhaps more importantly it could even calm riders and lower the stress level commuting to and after a long workday, stimulate feeling more alive in midday and more settled in the later evening. From many newer more modern elements of train design, LED wayfinding signage including system alerts, station info, and rotating advertising, it feels like we are moving further away from the 20th century, not just into 21st century design but beyond early 21st century intro into a more mature design era on the most forward thinking systems in which the practicality keeps getting better. But if they watched your videos they could tweak that even more. Not any one system has all the good ideas, but they are coming closer. How hard is it to look at other city’s trains and copy some of those things that make a better experience for the commuting public, both citizens and visitors? Has anybody else been bothered by the change in Apple’s software that makes speech to text more difficult? For me it adds words and punctuation marks I didn’t say. The KZread app makes the text jump back to the beginning when I try to do edits. Very annoying. Takes much longer to make a comment verbally, which should be much quicker. It’s really a real mess. But the new Ontario Line train design looks quite well thought out so far. If they listen to suggestions a bit more they will be truly awesome, as they should be for the great city that Toronto was before and is really been becoming even more so. Impressive transit upgrades happening. Truly impressive. Not perfect but awfully good. Minor tweaks would move the already very good closer to truly great.

Lowering the log by not would just result in people falling asleep even more than they do now. On the morning commute to work I don’t need relaxation i need the thing to be as bright as possible so I actually wake up.
The glass that blocks people from the railway is a good idea.
The other angular subway car I think was great was NY R40s
By the time the lines are open the trains will be in a museum!!
I arrived with my family in Toronto just a few months ago from another side of our planed. What I feel now living in downtown that I don't need a car. Really. Even current infrastracture is solid, and absolutely insane as for North America. But active transit (especially this) and other urban projects in Toronto makes me feel it can become not just "one of" the best cities for living, but, maybe, best at all. The city has absolutely everything else to be a pearl of all world, but transit network at this moment is still not enough. Only one thing makes me upset - housing prices, which are ridiculous compared to median income. Hope city and province will do something to and bring cost of housing into line with at least income of torontonians.
