First Look at: Tiny Combat Arena (Early Access)

Ойындар

MicroProse had graciously given me access to their early version of their new game called Tiny Combat Arena, out on Steam on Feb 22nd 2022.
Overall, I like it, though it's hard to say without all the content there. The EA version was quite barebones, so it depends on what we get later on to judge it on its content.

The brilliance of this game is that it appeals to those of us who played these kinds of games in the 80's and 90's but never had the horsepower to crank the graphics up all the way. I remember playing Chuck Yeager's Air Combat and Gunship 2000 on low settings, wishing I had a 386 XT to run them on. Now, I finally get to see what it would have been like. This is a wonderful trip down nostalgia lane for us Gen Xers.

So instead of buying the Apache in DCS that is using all your Horsepower you want to fly this? Why not find a old Desktop on the Scrap Heap and fly your Gunship 2000 again? As much as I loved GS2000 (on Amiga) and even the first Gunship (C-64), I would not trade it for a second for my DCS AH-64D experience. This is not like meeting your first Girlfriend again...

I have been following this game for almost a year now and I am so happy it is getting hype, the dev has such a clear vision and it is executed perfectly. No kickstarter, no stretch goals or pipe dreams, just a really fun little game with a ton of style getting published. Hopefully Why485 can get a proper studio going, I would love to see what he could do with an actual budget. As for a few questions the dev has already answered in the comments of his videos on YT and on other platforms: Other Planes? - No, only the harrier. Other NPC planes and vehicles are planned and on the table, but the only flyable aircraft planned is the harrier. Other Maps? - Yes. Lots of other footage featuring desert and European maps has been shown. I think those were mostly test maps, but some of the assets and groundwork is there.

Totally nailed it with that "I have half an hour" (and wanna fly something). It usually takes that amount of time alone to troubleshoot the shit that is Windows Mixed Reality when you want to get some stick time in DCS with VR in a G2 and even if it doesn't bug you with any issues you might just have taken off by the time those 30 minutes are over.

Microprose used to be *the* name for flight sims back when I was young. I've wishlisted the game on Steam, although I don't know whether I'll pick it up as soon as it's released on Early Access. But will still follow it closely. If it is keyboard friendly (don't have and can't afford a joystick, much less a full hotas set up) and the developer adds more planes (would love to see more cold war era jets!) then this will surely be my next purchase. Would be a nice flight sim fix for someone without the means and time for something as sophisticated as DCS, but also don't really enjoy purely arcade flight game.

@@hullukana214 Well, I was thinking hanging them on the cheek stations that come with the CFTs. You can have 3 bombs in a row and have 4 rows in total with that. Not entirely sure if the 87/97 and respective WCMD go there with that count, but that would not induce that much drag, similar to the loadout the Tomcat can take in the tunnel. But I looked up some photos with F-15E and CBU-97 (easier to find than 105, but it's basically the same shape and almost the same weight) that carry 20 of those. 4 on each wing stub, 3 on each cheek and 6 on the centerline. Either way, that beast carries a lot, but you'd probably get the best drag index by just using the cheek stations and keep the CL and wing stations for tanks, if needed. Due to the CFTs however, the Strike Eagle comes with ~22k lb of fuel already and each external tank is ~4k.

I'm also happy to see games released that will serve at a gateway to the world of flight simulation, because if the sim market is dominated by games with a learning curve as steep and high as Mount Everest it'll be hard to get new players interested in them.

I've been following the dev, Why485, from way back when he used to put up DCS videos. It's been really cool to see the development of this game from the ground up.

Looks fun, thanks for making this! Got to love Ralfi, running out of fuel just to make a point that once we play it we do not do the same. Because everyone knows Ralfi never runs out of fuel normally *wink-wink*

For the love of god please all support this game people. Without Microprose back in the 1990 producing all their amazing flight sims we would not be where we are today. There the original OG (I used to prefer them to Janes personally). Buy this damn game!!

True but they got greedy like so many others; that's what finished them in the end; a list of lame titles full of bugs and problems: Grand Prix 4 which Geoff Crammond begged them for more time on, Gunship! which failed because they tried to please both arcade and sim people; and you can't do that. It was a shame. Sadly this looks dated before it even gets released, if they'd used up to date graphics I might have been more interested.

something I noticed is that the control setup page for tiny combat arena is the exact same as Gunner, Heat, PC!

It looks like the air war version of Running With Rifles. I'd certainly play it if there's a decent selection of aircraft and maps.

Its going for £15 on Steam. I might get it as it seems good for a little mess-around. I agree with you, Ralfie in that if they add a lot of things for this it would be good little game.

They made the gun very sattisfying but i would like to see planes like the Hornet, Viper. Multiplayer would also be cool. It might turn out to be a simple DCS. Pretty cool game.

Good to see a flight sim with retro graphics. While I enjoy DCS and XPlane, it's a bit too tough on my old graphics card. Hope the gameplay is fun, with decent realistic weapons, systems and flight modeling.
