My wife got me a classic RIA 1911 A1 for my birthday this year. It quickly became my go to. I miss the lightweight Glock I used to carry, but I absolutely love my RIA .45 & unless I can get a antique 1911 Springfield, this will be the piece I have on me at all time.

I was having some failure to feed issues with my R.I. Tactical 45 ACP. A gunsmith told me my problem was likely the R.I. 7 round magazines I was using. He said, they have a flat follower that is most likely causing the problem. He said, get some Colt 7 round magazines, they have a round follower that allows for better feeding of the rounds. I tried it and he was 100% right.

I’ve got the “Tac II” (sans “Ultra”) which is the same gun except no rail, and traditional rear slide serrations only. Mine was made in October ‘21 and I acquired it in April of last year. First 70 rounds I put through it, had three jams. Since then I’ve probably put approx 600 rounds through it without a hint of trouble. I clean it about every 300 rounds, give or take. I have not made, and do not intend to make, any modifications. Got three mags for it; two ACTs (came with one ACT) and one Mec-Gar. All work well. It eats all ammo I have tried in it without complaint; two types of hollow point (Federal Punch 230 grain and Remington HTP 185 grain) and four brands of 230 grain FMJ range ammo (Winchester, Federal, S&B, and Browning). Mine set me back $700 out the door from Bud’s Gun Shop, including tax, shipping, FFL fee. Kudos to you if you’re willing to EDC yours. I consider it a bit too large for EDC. However, I do have an OWB belt/holster rig for it that is quite comfortable, and I carry it under my sport coat for “sheepdog” duty at my synagogue. Hope it never comes to that but if it does, I’m confident that my Rock won’t let me down. Terrific weapon, especially for the price.

Glad to see a newer review on RIA. I do appreciate the info. I'll definitely keep my eyes out for those KCI mags. Seems like they might be trying to cut corners or something. Like you said bad step in the wrong direction. They need to stick with MecGar.

These budget friendly companies have been knocking it out of the park the last couple years. Obviously there's a noticeable quality difference between them and higher end, but to an new/average/modding buyer with thinner wallets, they are wonderful.

Noticeable, yes. But the gap is closing. I've seen these budget 1911s put insane round counts through them. Ive seen $3000 les baers break parts at less than 10,000 rounds, and a couple of these RI's surpass that. I bought an iver Johnson eagle 45acp like 12ish years ago and shot the absolute piss out of it. Paid $550 for it new and its nicely fit, never once jammed and has features of guns 3x the price. They are not safe queens and are built to shoot. Only thing ive changed was recoil spring, fit a tighter bushing, and ambi thumb safety.

Got the Taylor's Tactical version of this gun and it is awesome. The only problems I have ever had with mine were cheap-ass KCI magazine related. One jammed up in the gun and took a lot of prying (on the mag) to get it out. The other apparently had wonky feed lips because the follower and spring just jumped out at the range and wouldn't stay in when I put it back together. I could try to fix it but meh, junk is junk. As soon as I swapped those junkers out with some nice polished stainless Wilson Combat mags, I have never had another issue with it. Fantastic pistol.

I noticed my grips were similar to yours when I got mine. I inquired with Rock Island why the relief cut for my magazine release was small and didn't match any of their stock photos and they ended up sending me legit VZ Operator II grips in the mail that they used in their photos. Apparently some people are getting the real VZ grips like they should and some are getting a knockoff G10 grip. There is a noticeable texture difference, the knockoff feeling smooth while the VZ is a rougher texture and more grippy.

Polishing isn’t always the answer. Sometimes it’s better to have a surface with just enough surface holes/gouges/pits/channels/micro-abrasions to hold oil/grease and allow an even slicker(and longer wearing) surface. That’s why you see “scraped” areas on machining tools. Look up “hand scraping” done by machinists. Pretty cool.

Pretty sure they also keep the bullet that they fire through a gun for ballistics in case it turns up at a crime scene or what have you. I thought that was a law in the US but I could be wrong. Either way if you’re concerned about the bullet that the manufacturer might put into a database then what about the 4473 that you had to fill out to buy the gun in the first place? It just doesn’t make sense to me why some people are so jumpy about the idea when in reality in a SHTF or WROL situation the bullet is not the only way they’ll know someone owns a gun if they bought it at a store. Funnily enough these people who are paranoid about this usually don’t mind “flexing” on the internet with pictures of the guns that they “don’t own.” In reality if they keep a bullet from the gun I bought as a reference in case they find my gun or a bullet matching it at a crime scene it’s not too big of a deal to me. I don’t plan to murder anyone and the I had to fill out numerous forms before I got the gun that would all lead anyone with access to them back to me anyway so the spent casing that comes with a gun is the least of my concerns. I’m glad they test fired it… at least I know it didn’t blow up on the first firing.
